Touch and Go

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Friday, 25 November 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

"slipaway" (not my final answer)

the jews (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 25 November 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Never got any better than "Moving In Stereo" from their debut album.

It's All I Can Do

rogermexico (rogermexico), Friday, 25 November 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

"drive." it must be said.

awful bliss (awful bliss), Friday, 25 November 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

"Drive" or "Candy-O," maybe. I remember Jack Nietzsche citing somewhere the former as an example of a perfectly arranged song. (And yes, I did have to look up the spelling of his name, and no, I'm still not convinced that's right.)

"It's All I Can Do"

John Fredland (jfredland), Friday, 25 November 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

"It's All I Can Do" is awesome, and it's one of the two I couldn't decide between. But now that someone else has mentioned that one, I can say

"Since You're Gone"

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Friday, 25 November 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

"since you're gone" was my second choice.

athol fugard (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 26 November 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

Since You're Gone is great! but I've always had a soft spot for You're All I've Got Tonight.

Aaron A, Saturday, 26 November 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

It's got to be either "Moving in Stereo" or "Don'tcha Stop"....although the way "Shoo Be Doo" segues into "Candy-O" might be the best few seconds they ever committed to tape.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 November 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

shake it up
the voice of reason has spoken.
end of thread.

retrogurl, Saturday, 26 November 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

at the moment, "Drive"

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 26 November 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

come on. "Just What I Needed." yeah, yeah, the commercial, whatever, so plead me.

Dr. Wu, Saturday, 26 November 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

Don't suppose anybody else is gonna say "I'm In Touch With Your World". "Running To You" is up there too. (Greg Hawkes was my main man!)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Saturday, 26 November 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

Best Friend's Grrl

actually, just about anything off the 1st album's the correct answer.

eedd, Saturday, 26 November 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

WTF. Just what I needed, come on now.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 26 November 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

anyone for "good times roll"?

surely, one of the best rock tracks ever to begin a debut rock/pop album.

ZionTrain (ZionTrain), Saturday, 26 November 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Anyone who doesn't say "Just What I Needed" here is just trying not to be obvious. And I know, because I used to would have said "Best Friend's Girl" until my conscience forced me to concede that I was just trying not to be obvious, and that the correct answer is "Just What I Needed."

Guayaquil (eephus), Monday, 28 November 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

my final answer is "you're all i've got tonight."

athol fugard (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 28 November 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

i'm going to third "Moving in Stereo"

I approach these threads from the point of view of only ever being able to listen to one song by the band in question for the rest of my life. As such, "Just What I Needed" is so engrained in my subconscious I could probably live the rest of my days never having to hear it again and still remember every bit of it.

Now, the one song I could see myself going back to and actually listening to it over and over might be "It's All I Can Do."

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 28 November 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

...4th for "Moving in Stereo". sandwiched between "bye bye love" & "all mixed up",this trilogy for me is the highlight of their albums.

drone/a/saur (william), Monday, 28 November 2005 06:23 (twenty years ago)

almost another for Moving in Stereo, but I'm a gwan pick Bye Bye Love instead.

"Just What I Needed" has been my least favourite track off the debut since, oh, 1980; but through no fault of The Cars. Rather, blame it on a cover band featuring a friend's older brother on drums. She and I sat in their basement one afternoon for hours and listened to her brother's band attempt "Just What I Needed" 92 times, only to be thwarted every time by the idiot vocalist who apparently had no concept of rhythm, 'cause he'd start singing "...Wasting all my time" a beat too early - EVERY time! Kinda ruined the song for us all, for all time.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 28 November 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad to see "You Are The Girl" get some love. I've always thought that it was an underappreciated track of theirs.

Has anyone heard Ric Ocasek's new solo album, "Nexterday"? It's kinda low-key (especially next to "Troublizing"), but I like it. It's somehow very soothing to hear that voice attached to decent pop songs in 2005. My favorite song is "Don't Lose Me," one of the disc's few fast songs (it even opens with a "hit me!").

John Fredland (jfredland), Monday, 28 November 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Dangerous Type 3rded, followed by You're All I've Got Tonight.

I also like another late-period single (and bigger hit), "Tonight She Comes": sleek, cold, and tasty.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 28 November 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

i think i like "best friend's girl" better than "just what i needed," although possibly due to the overexposure of the latter. in any case, definitely one of those two.

"Little Black Egg"

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Monday, 28 November 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Well you can chock this up as another ILM success story. I went out to the CD store when I saw the title of this thread. I had meant to buy Cars discs last time I went there and forgot, so got angry enough to go out again and make things right. The store near me didn't have "Candy O" which is what I wanted, so I got "Panorama" instead. Really think it's great stuff, played it in the car on the way to two other stores in search of Candy O. At the second, I noticed the huge lot of very cheap vinyl out in front of the shop and figured I'd have a look before going into the store to look for Candy O specifically. I flipped through about 16 LP's before Candy O appeared. I looked at the vinyl carefully in the light, and it looked as if it had never been played. It cost me a whopping sum of US$0.99! I am a happy camper.

So far, "Touch & Go" is probably the winner, even if I usually prefer the Benjamin Orr songs. Just never thought I would enjoy the Cars this much. Panorama is kindof spooky and dark overall, not what I might have suspected. I like it a lot. Haven't played Candy O yet, but I love the title track.

Deborah Harry was a Hippie (Deborah Harry was a Hippie), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

Rob Sheffield once wrote (rather unkindly too) that Panorama was the Cars' Wire album. It's not as consistent as Candy-O, but it's not bad.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

Rob Sheffield sounds like a really familiar name. What am I missing here?

Debbie Harry Was A Hippie (Deborah Harry was a Hippie), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

He writes for Rolling Stone; before this graceless indentiture, he wrote the funniest, truest criticism for Details and The SPIN Guide to Alternative Rock.

Panorama is fantastic. Related ILM Link:

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 05:03 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. Yeah I've played some of Candy O now and I'm not sure I like it as much as Panorama, but we'll see.

Listen to "It's All I Can Do" a few more times...

moving in stereo, or let the good times roll

Rob Sheffield's dislike of Panorama all but GUARANTEES its greatness. And it's still my personal favourite, after the debut.

If nothing else, "Drive" is certainly my favourite Heartbeat City cut; but I've only ever heard five songs off that.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)
