...i got some great recommendations last year with this thread so i am gonna give it another try now.

drone/a/saur (william), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 07:04 (twenty years ago)

THE KEVINS S/T

Palpatean Mists, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 07:30 (twenty years ago)

well, i think the black lips record was probably one of the only decent ones.

so my vote goes to: THE BLACK LIPS, LET IT BLOOM

corey c (shock of daylight), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

So far, my votes go to...

Chris Brokaw "Incredible Love"

&

Boondogs "Fever Dreams"

Bob Dylan, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

Anja Garbarek (daughter of jazz saxophonist Jan): her third album, "Briefly Shaking." Like the best bits of Fiona Apple and Stina Nordenstam without the icy Nordic nonsense or the bootleg hype.

The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower's "Love In the Facist Brothel."

STNNNG - Dignified Sissy

Best loud rock record of the year...amazing lyrics...amazing math punk dudes get down to serious business...the fall, cows, jesus lizard, etc etc...

Not sure how overlooked this is, but Minus Story's No Rest For Ghosts comes to mind.

It didn't get a Pitchfork review. If that passes for below the radar, so be it.

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Cyne's Evolution Fight is probably the best overlooked underground hip-hop album of the year.

ChicagoKing, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

meneguar - i was born at night

meneguar.com

originally released on magic bullet, and is now being remixed and remastered to be released on troubleman. often compared to archers of loaf and early modest mouse, so basically, they sound pretty indie, fairly punky, but entirely awesome.

Safety Scissors - Tainted Lunch

Seriously, so good, people who like Sparks, Yello, Kelley Polar, hell even the Junior Boys . . . y'all need to check this out.

Bocephus King, All Children Believe in Heaven, which came out in Canada in 2003 but not in the U.S. until 2005. For fans of Leon Russell and Lyle Lovett. Here's what I wrote about it for AMG:

The Psychic Paramount, "Gamelan Into The Mink Supernatural." This group rose from the ashes of Laddio Bolocko, and unlike its sister group, Electric Turn To Me, it picks up where Laddio Bolocko left off. This is LOUD (in the red), raucous instrumental psych rock with some well-placed tape edits thrown in for good measure.

Coloma's Dovetail hasn't generated much discussion around here. (Has it?) The more I listen the higher it climbs among my favorite releases this year.

Despite the shift towards live instrumentation, it's not a huge departure from 2003's Finery. The arrangements are somehow simultaneously sparse and lush -- it's gorgeous on a purely sonic level. And the closer, "Miles Away," is like a camera slowly zooming out to show a bigger and bigger picture of the interconnected events of an ordinary day. It's stunning in the same way as Scritti Politti's "Brushed with Oil, Dusted with Powder." (The visual appeal of the CD booklet is likewise analogous to Scritti Politti's Anomie & Bonhomie.)

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Thursday, 1 December 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

juliana hatfield - made in china. her last two albums have been the best of her career.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 1 December 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

monica queen 'return of the sacred heart', beautiful pop songs or hymns or whatever, quiet echoey production and her amazing singing. surely this is loved somewhere.

keyth (keyth), Thursday, 1 December 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

cranebuilders "sometimes you hear through someone else" seems to have been ignored by everyone and is probably my most listened to album of the year. it's what the (still damn good) tompaulin album wanted to be but didn't quite achieve

The Car Is On Fire - selftitled

The Car Is On Fire - selftitled

I'll catch them on tour with Dogs Die In Hot Cars.

Myke Weiskopf (Myke Weiskopf), Saturday, 10 December 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

Remate - On Junk

From Spain, he's not exactly neo-folk nor alt-country. In fact, I've been listening to it for two months and I'm still not sure how to describe it, but it's in my top 10.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 10 December 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

i see a new random number cd is out. always a puzzle trying to decipher why he's not more popular.

keyth (keyth), Saturday, 10 December 2005 04:59 (twenty years ago)

-- drone/a/saur

Hmm. Your nickname makes me wonder... have you heard the new Christina Kubisch cd, 'Armonica'?

She made this long drone piece with glass harmonica sounds. She played on an original instrument and then layered up the sounds. The glass harmonica has a very ethereal, beautiful sound, so it's perfectly suited for drone music.

Turangalila (Salvador), Saturday, 10 December 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

woodbine - best before end

Michael B, Saturday, 10 December 2005 06:35 (twenty years ago)

this: TBA, *Annule* , despite my nit-picking on the thread, has proven a surprisingly durable listen by the years end, more than it expected to feel at this point when I initially got it.

Too late to hibernate (fandango), Saturday, 10 December 2005 06:42 (twenty years ago)

Morane - Everyone Is Like You

The German House/Indiepop mindmeld!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 10 December 2005 07:15 (twenty years ago)

ha! someone (an Optimo attendee) YSI'ed me a track off that other day.

It's good! No way in hell would I have been able to place the year or the label or locale like that though. The vocal weirdness is explained a bit now though (couldn't fathom what with or when the effects & tweakage was done... 2005 apparently!).

Too late to hibernate (fandango), Saturday, 10 December 2005 07:21 (twenty years ago)

xpost - fuck yes on the Woodbine. It's in my Top Ten of the year.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 10 December 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

Mike Wexler - EP

Cannot recommend this enough.

*Jazz Douchebag* Berman (Hurting), Saturday, 10 December 2005 07:30 (twenty years ago)

David Thomas Broughton - Complete Guide to Insufficiency (holy shit...)

Meehan Ah Um (Meehan Ah Um), Saturday, 10 December 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

Jack-O and the Tearjerkers - Don't Throw Your Love Away is pretty much perfect, and no one talks about it.
And I don't know how under the radar the Withcraft album is - I think Kerrang had on their top 40 - but get 'Firewood' by Witchcraft.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Saturday, 10 December 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

Morane - Everyone Is Like You

Hey wow! This is really good. A nice year-end surprise.

the idea that something would be "under the radar" musically at ILM is the funniest thing i've heard in a while

the idea that something would be "under the radar" musically at ILM is the funniest thing i've heard in a while

I am 4 of 34 on this thread in terms of artists I have heard of - those being Kubisch, Hatfield, Franz Ferdinand, and The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower. So these are cool recommendations. Doing some cursory research I listened to Grizzly Bear, Minus Story, Brokaw, Safety Scissors, and Woodbine. Can't say any of them blew me away, but then again neither did Isolee or Kelley Polar of Imogen Heap or most of the seemingly over-the-radar ILM things.

I recommend the Chaos Butterfly CD "threelivingthings". Website w/MP3 at http://www.magneticmotorworks.com/chaos. I raved about 'em on this thread.

Miguel "Anga" Diaz: Echu Mingua. I've said things about it on other threads, and I don't feel like trying to think of anything new to say, but I'm sure it would appeal to someone. Despite what you will read about who Anga Diaz has worked with, this album (with a couple exceptions) sounds nothing like BVSC, the Afro Cuban All Stars, or even Cachaito.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Monday, 12 December 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

the best rock n roll records of 2005, no lie:

the king khan & bbq show

Grouper - Way Their Crept

fem-vox driven ambient masterpiece.

a, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

I'll second the Coloma. Definitely one of my favorites. I think the reason that nobody's talking about it is because it's impossible to find! I've only seen it for sale at Soulseduction. Amazon.co.uk doesn't even have it.

Here are my other favorites that give me hope in current music!

Jeans Team: Musik von Oben
Foetus: Love
Thione Seck: Orientation

Patrick South (Patrick South), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

no one is talking about the Coloma because it's embarrassing

a, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

the light footwork - one state two state
nedelle - from the lion's mouthc

Stephen C (ihope), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

stephen, nedelle was number one on my albums list! maybe one other p&j voter will vote for it tho

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

a, people are talking about PFork's list and that's pretty embarrassing.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

Ha. Thats awesome; She is adorable!

Stephen C (ihope), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

hanne hukkelberg - little things

If we consider "below the radar" to mean "barely mentioned on ILM"

DJ Mark Marcelo - The Ignant Mix
Eyvind Kang/Tucker Martine - Orchestra Dim Bridges (actually from late 2004)
Jay Jay Johanson - Rush
Statik - Connected
Safety Scissors - Tainted Lunch

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

oh, drew already mentioned Safety Scissors!

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

I 2nd Connected! I can barely remember everything that came out this year that I loved, but the Statik record is so far and away my record of the year and got so little love it is criminal.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Coloma thirded. it's not released in the States, hence it's hard to find. unless you look at the iTunes store. and once the Superpitcher remix hits, that'll all change.

Psychic Paramount seconded. a blistering listen.

Goldmund - Corduroy Road may make my Top Ten this year. gentle, early morning, reticent piano music (some songs fromt he Civil War era) to watch the motes float by.

imbidimts, Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

chuck have u seen d ford live? i've not heard his "official" release but i had some demos at some point and i saw him a long while back at the borderline. he was ok but his songtitles surpassed the quality of pretty much everything he actually did...

Who the hell do you THINK I am? I'm the goddamn Batman! (Barima), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

If you're looking for extraordinary electronic/dance music, heavy on the analog and melancholy, both Metope's Kobol and the label's 2Rabimmel 2Rabammel 2Rabum 2Bum Bum compilation deserve more attention than they get/got. Call me an Areal Records fanboy (go on, you know you want to).

Natalie Rose LeBrecht - Imagining Weather

Josh Timmermann (Josh Timmermann), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Bob Drake - The Shunned Country

like all of Drake's records, this one is criminally "under the radar" (though it's not under the radar if you follow avant-prog), and would likely appeal to folks into folkish, experimental pop. tons of details to obsess over, and lots of little melodies that appear and disappear before you really know what's going on. 50-odd tracks in about 45 mins, which means you might have to accustom yourself to the pace. I hope this guy gets his due by more mainstream media outlets in the future, because I can't think of anyone else as unique

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

The Deadly Snakes

meister, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

BBQ - Tie Your Noose.

One-man band Mark Sultan, who released a Deadly Snakes 7" on his own Sultan Records. Roots-y Garage rock cranked to 11!!

haven't heard the record with King Khan, but will definitely be seeking it out.
