There is a pretty okay version (with lyrics) by Amon Duul II on the (otherwise not very good) "Hijack" album, but I don't have the ability to post it.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

There's a really weird version of it on the debut self released lp by President's Breakfast (very odd noise collage / funk hybrid group led by Click Dark, from the late 80s). Sorry, can't post it.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 00:41 (nineteen years ago)

From "Naked City" by... Naked City:

John Zorn - Alto sax.
Bill Frisell - Guitar.
Wayne Horwitz - Keyboards.
Joey Baron - Drums.
Fred Frith - Bass.

vartman (novaheat), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

Even though they're cheesy, Modern Jazz Quartet's version is lovely

J Knowles, Tuesday, 6 December 2005 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

I kind of heart Modern Jazz Quartet.

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 01:24 (nineteen years ago)

i misread the title as "Her Jazz Douchebags!" and i thought, "hey, what did i write on my blog [herjazz.org, fyi] that was so offensive?"

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 01:45 (nineteen years ago)

Do you, in fact, like jazz, Maria?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 01:47 (nineteen years ago)

Borah Bergman - "Lonely Woman"

From Reflections on Ornette Coleman and The Stone House

Borah Bergman: Piano
Hamid Drake: Drums

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 01:57 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry, Maria. I'm just kind of tickled by the idea that the official name for jazz fans could be 'douchebags.'

More versions!

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 02:00 (nineteen years ago)

For some reason I thought there was a version on Spy vs. Spy, which I haven't listened to in 10 yrs. at least, but no.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 02:11 (nineteen years ago)

WOW that Borah Bergman version is great!

That whole album is awesomely hair-raising. (xpost)

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 02:50 (nineteen years ago)

Nothing wrong with MJQ.

vartman (novaheat), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 04:02 (nineteen years ago)

I think I'm with Borah Bergman, too! But as I've said elsewhere, I'm wine-drunk, although unfortunately coming out of it a little bit. Time to go to bed!

Horace Silver Silver Quintet - Song for my Father

I suspect we're talking about different lonely women, although this one is particularly gorgeous

Charlie Haden & Paul Motian feat. Geri Allen

These Robust Cookies (Robust Cookies), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 08:23 (nineteen years ago)

This thread is cooking my brain. How does one possibly take one of the best songs ever written/played, tweak it, fuck with it, and cover it, and make something truly new & original while maintaining great respect for the original. And it's happened 5x on this thread.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

I've liked all the versions except Takayanagi's so far. (Wandering ≠ Exploring)

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

The Bergman and Bowie versions didn't do that much for me. :(

It's not them, it's me. They would make great soundtrack music, but I've been in a phase where I'm not really feeling rhythmically free stuff.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

Great thread idea, though. I'm looking forward to grabbing the Haden/Motian cut.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

It's really good. First time I've ever heard Geri Allen.

Diamanda Galás

Turangalila (Salvador), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

It's not them, it's me.

It sounds like you're breaking up with them.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

> Great thread idea, though.

Thanks, I got a couple more around here, I think, that I'll post when I find 'em - Old and New Dreams for sure, maybe some others. I hope someone who has the Amon Duul and MJQ versions will post those, too.

Then maybe we can move on to some other standards!

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 01:24 (nineteen years ago)

"Giant Steps"!

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 01:28 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, while I'm a massive Takayanagi fan, I've never been overly fond of that Lonely Woman LP. It's an interesting side of him, another very welcome glimpse into the man, but ultimately not as hair-raising as his best stuff. Still, the track fulfilled the thread request..

ok, here's a better offering, the 8 Bold Souls version from their 1991 record Sideshow, their 2nd of three and in my opinion their best. I love all of them but was *slightly* disappointed in Last Option. still think Sideshow is where they really nailed things...

http://s53.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1J0VOIO7PVOIC0VIMV437R6TN8

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 06:21 (nineteen years ago)

I have the MJQ version but it's on LP. I've still never figured out how to digitize those darn things.

I'm hoping some kind soul will post the Brotzmann version, as I don't have that record and have never heard it.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 06:22 (nineteen years ago)

Is it totally presumptuous of me to post the original version? I've been enjoying everyone else's but feel like a leech. Just in case someone clicks on this thread by accident w/o knowing the original, here it is, the song that is probably responsible for getting me into jazz (this past weekend):

Ornette Coleman - Lonely Woman

Kronos does what they have to do

These Robust Cookies (Robust Cookies), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 07:14 (nineteen years ago)

that's fuckin' crazy. nice!

regular roundups (Dave M), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 07:33 (nineteen years ago)

There's a fantastic Peter Brötzmann version. But I can't find the CD.

Tobias Rapp (Tobias Rapp), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

This thread is awesome.

xavier mcshane (xave), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, yes it is. I only feel bad that I don't have another version to post.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

I don't have any way of posting it, but Cruel Frederick did a standard-ish but very good version on their SST album "The Birth Of The Cruel" (I think it was that album, may've been the second one they did).

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

I just did a stroll around slsk... there are songs called "Lonely Woman" by Sarah Vaughn and Otomo Yoshihide, but they're not that song. Too bad, I was really drooling for versions by those two. I have a few others queued up.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

I love the 8 Bold Souls and Kronos versions. I like that 8BS have an arrangement and play the melody, and I like how the Kronos version is divided into 5 + 7.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

Damn, the 8BS version is long. I listened for like six minutes, said "yeah, that's nice" and then noticed it was fading out ten mintues later.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

Here's a version by the Double U:

http://s64.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=02SJAOYTN0UNH1CC9SB7H7OU3H

... and its accompanying remix by Glands of External Secretion:

http://s64.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0G2SCFMQPG3UH048LT0WORJOCN

... taken from their joint album on VHF records.

Excellent thread, by the way. A few months back I was thinking how great it would be to have a compilation of Lonely Womans, but I was too lazy and not enough of a douchebag to apply myself to it. It's good to have this thread doing the work for me.

Am I the only one who thinks that a version with someone throat singing the melody would be just about the raddest thing ever?

Bobby Peace (Bobby Peace), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

So it turns out the one by Pat Metheny from 1984 is the Horace Silver song. Which is funny, because it's Metheny with Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins, on an album with three other Ornette covers, just not "LW".

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 8 December 2005 03:44 (nineteen years ago)

Found my copy of the Old and New Dreams version

http://s64.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0WYTC3FRVQHEH0BYG7TE6BZKUF

for those not in the know, Old and New Dreams was a group consisting of Coleman's classic quartet with Dewey Redman instead of Ornette.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

Nice. I like those last three versions.

Leaving off the Takayanagi version, the eleven that I have now add up to 79:42.

I really like the idea of Jazz Douchebags rolling series of threads for multiple versions. I'm changing my vote from "Giant Steps" to "Take the A Train," because there's a solo piano version by Sun Ra that I heard once, that completely blew my mind.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

I would enjoy a jazz douchebag thread for Caravan.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

The "Ask a Question" button is in the same place as ever, ya douchebags.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah yeah, just gauging preferences. It's not always about me, just most of the time.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

Honestly on this topic I'm real easy to please. Duke would be great. Trane would be great. Monk would be great. Cole Porter or Irving Berlin tune would be great. We gotta lotta options here, and there's no hurry.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

It's not always about me, just most of the time.

I can't say the same:

Hey Jazz Douchebags! Post a version or several of "Caravan"

Tobias Rapp (Tobias Rapp), Thursday, 8 December 2005 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

Now that is a treat. What album is that on?

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 8 December 2005 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

It's on "14 Love Poems Plus Ten More" (Free Music Productions). It's a rerelease of a LP from 1984, which was called "14 Love Poems" plus some outtakes.

Tobias Rapp (Tobias Rapp), Thursday, 8 December 2005 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

Having been on a totally non-jazz...ahem..."tip" for a few weeks this thread has just got me back in. Excellent work all round - this is what the internet is for obviously.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Thursday, 8 December 2005 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

Awesome!! Thanks so much for posting the Brotz, Tobias!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 8 December 2005 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

This is somewhat different to the other versions and may well not be to jazz douchebags taste but I won't to contribute something (anything!) after getting so much out of this thread.

Ken Peplowski - Lonely Woman
http://s4.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0AQJ3FM4DB8C93DJZYAC6CYDVR

I'd also love to hear the MJQ version if anyone has it.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Thursday, 8 December 2005 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

that should be "all jazz douchebags taste" and "wanted to contribute".
it's quite late here.

I like the Peplowski version, I think.

It's good.

mcd (mcd), Friday, 9 December 2005 01:43 (nineteen years ago)

I've listened to it four times now -- I think it's a case of admiring the arrangement more than actually liking it. He doesn't bite off more than he can chew, but he bites off an awfully big chunk, and it's sort of amazing to sit and listen to him chew it.

It's just another lossy compression format. Google "ogg vorbis player" and bob's your uncle, or however the saying goes. I use Whamb.

There's a great version of it on Marzette Watts' hella out-of-print Savoy record.

I've decided that Ornette's Lonely Woman is my favourite piece of jazz music. Not a lot seems to come close - or does it? IS there anything else out there as melodic and plaintive and slightly-skewed as this? Big question, I know.

Here's a version from James Blood Ulmer's Music Speaks Louder Than Words, a strange record that mixes six instrumental versions of Ornette tunes with three original blues/funk/rap songs. I believe this album features the only recordings of the Coleman compositions "Cherry Cherry" and "Street News".
