funkadelic is, well, more pyschedelic and trippy, and parliament is more groovy dancable disco kinda motown funk.

clinton simultaneously worked with both groups during his career, so they're usually considered different styles of the same big band.

if you're more into solos you'll like the first 3 funkadelic albums with eddie hazel more, and if you like dancable stuff, parliament would suit you more.

strongly recommend Live/P. Funk Earth Tour (1977) album. captures their live energy so well :)

Generally you may be right. But then, why was "One Nation Under a Groove" credited to Funkadelic?

I figure One Nation Under a Groove was relased under the Funkadelic banner because, since they were now signed to a major lable--Warners--they had to deliver some hits. ONUAG was the first Funkadelic song to make top ten on the R&B chart.

Bootsy played in both bands, as well as his own Rubber Band (mostly the same musicians). And don't forget The Brides of Funkenstein, the Horny Horns, and Parlet.

Then theres all the spin offs...

Absolute titanic figure, gonna miss him

A giant. If you get a chance try to watch the Robert Moog documentary just to see him hanging out with Moog and Rick Wakeman. Remember when he was on the Letterman Show in the World's Most Dangerous Band for about five minutes? Perhaps it was a bit longer. It was hard to actually see him. You could just his keyboard and the bottom of his chin.

Hmm 1994 or 95 w bootsy. Mothership reunion tour was later, '98 or something? Not sure. Want to say i saw him on later tours w p-funk but i'd have to check that.

I saw p-funk a bunch in th 90s/00s. Hard to keep the personnel straight in my memory. Other old school dude i was always excited to see was billy bass nelson.

Thinking I saw him with P-Funk once; as well as with Talking Heads.

Ugh this is terrible news. For more good Bernie Worrell playing, he is the main guy in the expanded Talking Heads band in Stop Making Sense.

anybody know if there's some connection between Southside Movement and P-Funk? SM's "I've Been Watching You" from 1975 uses the "I dunno what I'm a do witcha/when I getcha/put you in my cookie jar/save you for a rainy day" - which is a Fuzzy Haskin line that was floating around forever and re-used multiple times. But I can't really figure out where the connection would be. SM weren't on Motown and weren't from any of the P-Funk geographical centers (Jersey, Detroit, Cincinnati)

Wonder if anyone else likes The Jackson 5’s version of “I’ll Bet You,” which I believe was sampled by The Beastie Boys on “Car Thief.”

The Jackson 5 version of “I’ll Bet You” RULES. It’s not better than the original, but it stays true to the spirit of Funkadelic while still sounding like the Jackson 5, which is no mean feat.

It probably helps that most of the Funkadelic album, including “I’ll Bet You,” was recorded with Motown session musicians. Eddie Hazel is probably the only member of the band’s original instrumental lineup who appears on every track. He sings a ton too. That first record is basically a showcase for Eddie’s singing and playing combined with George’s songwriting and production, abetted by assorted ringers from the Funk Brothers. Billy Bass and the rest of the Parliaments are here and there too, but it’s not really a “band” record.

Believe the first released version of “I’ll Bet You” was by co-author Theresa Lindsey in 1966 on Golden World.

I've just been listening through various episodes of a podcast called Couch Matters. So have heard hour long interviews with both Clinton and Bernie Worrell.
Worrell talked about influences including Keith Emerson as well as hanging out with Ted Nugent.
Interesting listen.
May be others from the P-funk access on there certainly others about as interesting. I don't know if I've come across an interview with Jah Shaka before.

Last year I did a dive into the Parliaments 45s on Revilot , which I had never really listened to except for "Testify", and was surprised at how many of them were later reworked into Funkadelic and PFunk tunes, such as this one thats an early version of "Can You Get to That":

re: Parliaments on Revilot - Tuff City Records has supposedly acquired the original multi-track tapes and have been preparing a double-LP of everything. They already released a 7" with two instrumental takes of The Parliaments doing "Sgt Peppers" (!!) plus a 10" of vocal and instrumental versions of 3 other tracks, but I can't find much info about the full compilation beyond what's printed on the back of the 10". I hope it comes to fruition, as the earlier grey-area CD compilations sound pretty wonky, and many of the original 45s are not cheap.

Yeah, really hope that sees the light of day. I read something that seemed to imply that the Sgt Pepper recordings were sessions for an unfinished/unreleased LP, which would be amazing if true. Been dreaming about a nicely-done Parliaments Complete Revilot Recordings comp for a long time.

imo Electric Spanking of War Babies is a very underrated moment in the P-Funk canon. I love the thin, hollow reverb on it, and there are some great tunes still, for being so late in the game.

Some of this new album is interesting and maybe even good

i listened to cosmic slop on headphones yesterday for the first time in a while and it really grabbed me in new ways. 'march to the witch's castle' - jesus what a beautiful piece of music! the guitar playing is unreal. george clinton's monologue about soldiers returning home from the war - normally i don't go for that kind of thing but in this case i feel really moved by it. his commitment to empathy for the soldiers and for the rest of us, arriving at - 'may we understand ourselves better.' it's a wonderful prayer.

the vocalists really give it their all on these songs. i should be checking credits on who is who but, let's just say the high one, the middle one and the low one have so much presence and it's just really great singing all around. i love this line in cosmic slop about mama - "lord knows she meant no harm". honestly what a wonderful thing to feel about one's mother, a realization to have. my other favorite has always been "this broken heart". it's the low one's song, and what a blast of heart it is, so much fun to roar along to his singing. "yeahhh / i've been digging on your vibe lately / and i'm hip to all that gemini material laying around / and i ain't no gemini / i just wanna make sure we ain't half steppin / and short strokin / can you get to that?" there is such a scope and grandeur to this band, something really literary about them. dostoyevskian. lol i don't know.

insert 'and you've been findin more faults / than carter got liver pills' after 'vibe lately'. which, that's the first time i've understood that line, a reference to jimmy carter i guess?

there's also this sense, in all of the songs about heartbreak and love, that heartbreak and love are temporary - there is a glimpse of what's around the corner, and that is what makes the feelings of heartbreak or love so special. even the song about the hookup, 'no compute,' ends up in this hilarious place of 'horny regret'.

i've been obsessed with 'funkentelechy' from 'funkentelechy vs the placebo syndrome' for years. funk in dialogue with addiction. it's really funny and sinister at the same time. not preachy at all just advocating for keeping one's eyes open it seems. such a crazy, packed arrangement too. baroque funk or something. the horns are gorgeous.
