Is Section 25's "Looking From A Hilltop" worth $14.85? (& other used-record purchasing questions)

This store I know of has a copy of the 12" and I've had my eye on it for over a year now. I've checked it out and it seems to be in really good condition, it's just that I don't know if I can justify paying so much for a used record, especially a single. What would be a fair price in case I'm in a position to haggle?

you could get the album it's on for about the same

yes, the 12" is worth at least that much, especially if it's in good condition. you could get the CD reissue on LTM with all the mixes for close to the same price or you could download it for free but it's nice to have the orange sleeve and the distictive Saville design on the record center. It sounds so lush on vinyl. buy it now cuz you don't find them that often.

If the store has the album, I might go that route. But they likely won't, so I'll pick up the single. Unless somebody bought it within the last two weeks, which I doubt because it's been sitting there for years...

I paid $10 but would happily pay $15 all over again. Very good record.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 13:21 (nineteen years ago)

I was able to haggle it down to $10 including tax. It's in awesome shape too- no scratches, and maybe as much dust as if you had left it on the turntable overnight. Can't wait to get home to listen to it again!

naus, Wednesday, 28 December 2005 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

let's put it this way.. you answered your own question by not letting us know who was selling it. the Saville design alone is worth it.

I keep waiting for grimly fiendish to pop up on this thread saying "YES! Of course it is! Go buy it NOW!!!"

three months pass...
Is Patrick Cowley's Mind Warp LP (on Megatone) worth $9.99? I've heard some of his other stuff, like "Do You Wanna Funk" and his remix of "I Feel Love", and liked them, as they bridged the gap perfectly between Disco and Hi-NRG. But I also have the 12" of "Get a Little", and don't like that one as much, as it's not really in the same style.

So my questions are:

1) Would I like it? Is it closer to "Do You Wanna Funk" or "Get a Little"?

and

2) Is that a fair price?

naus (Robert T), Monday, 1 May 2006 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

if you had a decent job the effort you put into writing that would have been worth $10.

Yes, it's Partick Cowley, just buy it.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Monday, 1 May 2006 01:25 (nineteen years ago)

I don't have a job, really. Just temping for now :(

So the effort I put into writing that (approx 1 min.) would be worth $.15

And I guess you're saying I should buy that Promo EP with four songs taken from the Megaton Man album? It's not even on discogs!

naus (Robert T), Monday, 1 May 2006 01:31 (nineteen years ago)

sell your body for sex and buy the fucking record.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Monday, 1 May 2006 01:47 (nineteen years ago)

Excuse my ignorance, but how exactly does this relate to Section 25?

xpost

honorary joy division roadie (Bimble...), Monday, 1 May 2006 01:48 (nineteen years ago)

It doesn't, but I figured I might as well keep my purchasing questions confined to the same thread.

naus (Robert T), Monday, 1 May 2006 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

WOAH! You don't like Get a Little? That's the important question here! That song rules!

Mind Warp's kinda inconsistent, you won't like all of it, but you'll like enough of it. What are you gonna do, spend the 10 bucks on some movie that'll be over in 2 hours? Buy a record, it'll last forever.

What does this have to do with Section 25? A bit. New Order idolized Cowley and these records were a huge inflluence on New Order/Section 25 into the mid 80s.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 1 May 2006 02:32 (nineteen years ago)

there is some increasingly wonderful section 25 chat on this thread here, yo.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

So I went back last Sunday and picked up both the Mind Warp LP and the Menergy LP (EP?) They're both great. Favorite tracks on Mind Warp are "Invasion" and the title track. A few hours ago I went to that shop's sister store and they had so much Cowley/Sylvester it was sick! I ended up getting the Megatron Man LP and the 12" of "Do You Wanna Funk". They also had a Patrick Cowley Megamix LP on Megatone and a Paul Parker 12". How are those? Also, I can't seem to find the thread from a while back that discussed the Sylvester albums. Could anybody point me to it or just give their recommendations here? Some general non-Cowley Megatone advice would also be appreciated.

naus (Robert T), Friday, 5 May 2006 04:31 (nineteen years ago)

Paul Parker isn't as good...a lot of that Megatone stuff is hit-or-miss. I don't think it's all Cowley and it gets to be questionable hi-nrg. Of all the Sylvester stuff, I think the most essential is the Stars EP with the "ballad" track I Need Somebody to Love Tonight, the most beautiful song ever recorded, so definitely look for that.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 5 May 2006 04:41 (nineteen years ago)

I saw that and passed it up! I wasn't sure if it was that or All I Need that I had read about. Maybe next time I'm in the neighborhood and I have cash (if it's still there)...

naus (Robert T), Friday, 5 May 2006 04:46 (nineteen years ago)

I agree, you must get "Stars" for I Need somebody to love tonight. I ened my set last week with it.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Friday, 5 May 2006 04:53 (nineteen years ago)

I owned 3 or 4 copies of that ep...gave one to Mike Kelley.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 5 May 2006 05:45 (nineteen years ago)

I like the idea of this thread. I saw a King Sporty 12" called 'Can't Stop, Can't Keep Still', and this thread could've helpedf me decide to buy it. I didn't.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Friday, 5 May 2006 08:08 (nineteen years ago)

gave one to Mike Kelley

how did you meet him?

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Friday, 5 May 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

we went to college together. His older sister Blevin Blechtom gave me my first radio show.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

oh.. thought you meant Destroy All Monsters Mike Kelley

StanM (StanM), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

ah. I'd mention that the punk rock DAM have been unfairly maligned in some thread around here, not that they're great but there's some good rock there, but that would possibly be the only way that this thread could be so completely derailed as to make it useless.
