I've been listening to the new Martin Hannett compilation and...

I've been knocked out by two tracks in particular, Friendly Fires by Section 25 and The Last White Christmas from Basement 5. I'm not too familiar with either band. I know that Section 25 was considered a second tier Factory band and Basement 5 had photographer Dennis Morris and ex -101ers /Raincoats drummer Richard Dundaski among its members. Is either band worth checking out or were those two songs as good as it got?

The entire Hannett compilation is fantastic, by the way. Great sound quality and liner notes too.

section 25 are my single favourite band in the whole world. they are godlike, and were fundamentally just too good for this world. you can get pretty much every note they ever recorded via LTM.

the first album, whence comes friendly fires, is slate-grey psychedelia that took me a long, long time to understand but has, on occasion, been the only thing i've listened to for weeks.

the second album is more experimental, edited down from immense jams, and comes over like a cross between pink floyd, ACR and can.

the third album is beyond words. it is the distilled essence of perfection.

the fourth album is painfully flawed but can still reduce me to a quivering wreck.

(i know nothing about basement 5, though! i must get hold of this compilation. you know, jeff, that there's another thread about it here?

yeah, you need all section 25. it's all good.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

Leo Williams, bass dude in Basement 5 later turned up in Big Audio Dynamite. I've only heard "Immigrant Dub," their monster track on the Wild Dub - Dread Meets Punk Rocker Downtown comp. Search for 'em on this page or read this for more.

Jason Toon (Jason Toon), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

I searched for the previous thread on this but nothing came up.

Thanks for the glowing appraisals for Section 25. An enthusiastic response like that from grimly fiendish is good enough for me to seek them out.

I have the Wild Dub comp too.

Two Section 25 tracks that will convince you: "Dirty Disco II" and "Looking from a Hilltop."

seconded. from the hip (especially, to me, the live version) is like watching a steam locomotive take off into the air and fly away.

If Martin Hannett was alive today, he'd be extremely busy, producing Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, Interpol, The Strokes and Maximo Park among others.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 4 May 2006 09:42 (nineteen years ago)

imhwad, he'd be lying down and avoiding that lot.

http://www.section25.com/ tells us that SXXV are playing live soon! I also heard rumours of a new record this year or next. I might go up to the Leicester gig - it's only 25 years since i last saw them live.

I second what Grimly said abt the records. I reckon From The Hip is one of the 10 best albums ever made.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Thursday, 4 May 2006 10:40 (nineteen years ago)

Hannett might be producing Reggaeton Niños (instead of Adam Kidron).

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 4 May 2006 11:05 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone looking for a copy of the out-of-print Basement 5 CD, let me know. It's got most of their material on it. I like it; in a vague way it's similar to early PiL, but much heavier, though I don't think the production suits them particularly. But if you like "Last White Christmas," you'll like it all.

Dee Xtrovert (dee dee), Thursday, 4 May 2006 11:35 (nineteen years ago)

Basemen 5 just sounds amazing...the songs can get a bit dull at times though. The first song on the LP, Riot, is my fave. The track on Wild Dub is typically, a dub mix of one of the few slow songs on the LP. Half of the LP is not unlike faster Joy Division/Factory recs type stuff, and for energy and "hannet-esque" qualities, is pretty kick-ass.

In fact, it sounds so much like Joy Division, you'll wonder exactly what Bernie, Hooky and Steve had to offer. Not quite, but you get the idea. It's probably the most Joy Division-like of Hannett's productions.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 4 May 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

the first section 25 record is not very good

i thought this for a long time. then it suddenly clicked. and i love it.

!

in poulton, too. where i grew up.

fuck ME. i'm staggeringly discombobulated by this. i've mentioned this elsewhere, but - in a strange and freaky coincidence - jenny cassidy bought my parents' house the year before she died (she and larry were living separately by then). i don't know who was more surprised by the whole house thing: me having the frontwoman from my favourite-ever band buying the place where i grew up, or her for discovering how big a fan the sellers' son happened to be. i never got to meet her, tragically; that really pisses me off.

anyway. from the site:

After a long and brave fight against cancer Jenny Cassidy died on the 20th of November 2004 aged 42. The LTM DVD Section 25 So Far described as an audio-visual history of the band released January 2005 is rightly dedicated to her memory.

24. Inspiration

It is difficult to imagine the task of picking oneself up after a blow such as losing ones partner. Larry did this and also resolved to once again make music under the battle scarred banner of Section 25. So it was that in May 2005 he asked his brother Vin to pick up his sticks and start playing drums in accompaniment to his bass rumblings. Its what they’d always done. Ian Butterworth once again answered the call with strict instructions to stay away from all steep steps.

Using the recordings from the 2001 sessions as a starting point they plan to finally release the album with Les Temps Modernes early 2006.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

It's probably the most Joy Division-like of Hannett's productions.

In your opinion Dan! In *your* opinion! :) I say that honour goes to the Nico track on this comp, but we can shake hands peacefully about it anyhoo. (good god what's happening to me? the only person I ever knew who said 'anyhoo' was my dad)

Wow, that means we get a new ACR album and a new SXX5 album in the same year doesn't it? That's just too crazy! ;)

Dee Xtrovert I'm interested in the Basement 5 CD. Tried to email you, not sure if it's a real email address. We'll see. I've d/l some tracks from them but christ almighty the sound quality is really terrible.

There was a new track on LTM's 'Black Music' comp called Part Primitiv- I think it was recorded in 2001. Sadly it's not very good.

I dug out the Pauline Murray/Invisible Girls album 2 days ago...

I remember hearing "Dream Sequence" in Quicksilver records, back when it came out. One of those "had to have now!" moments.

It sounded like a monster hit, but it wasn't! It couldn't even claim to be a missed one, as it did make the lower reaches of the chart.

http://www.slicingupeyeballs.com/2013/08/14/martin-hannett-tapes-joy-division-new-order/

What appears to be a treasure trove of aging tapes recorded by legendary postpunk producer Martin Hannett — including copies of original masters and outtakes by the likes of Joy Division, New Order, The Psychedelic Furs and Magazine — have been “rescued” from a garbage bin and are now being put up for sale by Hannett’s former personal assistant.

Julia Adamson, a onetime member of The Fall who worked for Hannett from 1981 to 1983 before serving as a sound engineer at Manchester’s Strawberry Studios through the remainder of the ’80s, this week posted a photo on Facebook showing nearly 30 tape boxes with the note: “rescued tapes of Martin Hannetts .. anyone interested.” She doesn’t say where the tapes were found.

The boxes, as you can see in higher resolution, contain notes referring to a host of acts Hannett worked with in the late ’70s and ’80s, including the Furs, Magazine, The Durutti Column, The Names, Slaughter & The Dogs, Minny Pops, Yargo, Easterhouse and What? Noise, one of Adamson’s own bands.

Of course, the items of most interest no doubt are the six boxes marked with either “Joy Division” or “New Order” — particularly the one labeled “Joy Division Outtakes.” Adamson suggests that a copy of the original master tapes of Joy Division’s landmark 1979 debut Unknown Pleasures also is among the collection.

The quarter-inch tapes were digitized in 2008, Adamson, who played in The Fall in the late ’90s, notes in the comment thread on Facebook. She writes that she’s had no luck interesting Peter Hook in the tapes: “He’s not a happy bunny. Tried the other band members, too, to no avail, and the record companies.”

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 14 August 2013 15:09 (twelve years ago)

Whoa, cool...though I am little more surprised by the appearance of Julia Adamson (aka Julia Nagle)! A very underrated Fall member, love her era of the band
