the best one i've heard was hios recent astonishing collaboration with Ryoji Ikeda (he goes under his real name - Carsten Nicolai on this one). pretty much anything on his raster noton label is worth a listen, as are his releases on mille plateaux.

more here

I like almost all I have heard of alva.noto.

alva.noto & ryuchi sakamoto, "trioon 1".

He's also a visual artist, and uses his glacial music in glacial installations, like the rather impressive one a couple of years ago at Watarium, Tokyo, or an installation last month at the Neue Nationalgalerie here in Berlin.

do not miss a live show (precisely because of the visual component)

damn, I should've bought the sakamoto/alva noto disc on sale yesterday...

well worth going, this -- the visuals were effectively a score you could lock into...kind of solves the 'problem' of a laptop gig, and my problem with the strict-ness. was thinking of an updated kraftwerk but they don't write hooks. not yet, anyway.

Just before the interval yasuno tone was there to perform his new work. I sat at the balcony and did I count the ppl walking out? guilty as charged...lost count but it couldn't have been more than 10% of the audience (I'm lame at counting). I haven't played tone much, the whole thing had what i imagine it to be a fluxus feel to it and sharp-ish contrast to raster-noto. It appeals to yr industrial 'fuck everybody' sensibilities, if you happen to have them. The perf consisted of him drawing chinese characters into his laptop. here are the details.

I know what that link is saying but if it was just a tape broadcast on the surround sound w/ him just drawing characters it's fkn funny. I think you can listen to it if you look around the site. all the perfs will be broadcast on one of these saturdays.

one year passes...
Revive! I was listening to "for" today on the basis of a review in the Wire, and it sounded great, and then to "Optofiles" (randomly downloaded) and it sounded even more awesome. Possibly this is just because I haven't listened to any experimental elctronica for a long time, but I'm inclined to think that this is genuinely great music. Anyone else?

track 4 from Transform is the one that rips the rhythmic grid from "Bug-A-Boo" by Destiny's Child and replaces the drums sounds with sinewaves and clicks

great to dj them both at the same time

*raises hand*

Opto Files, Transform, and Prototypes are all very rewarding. The records with Sakimoto (sp?) are more ambient (as in Music For Airports) bit I still like them. His recording for the 20 To 2000 series is also excellent, that was my first taste. Probably my favorite artist of that whole minimal electronic scene.
