Grime in 2005

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 19:10 (twenty years ago)

yes yes new year n'all everybodee welcome incl the 'grime is shit' brigade!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Grime is shit.

Confounded (Confounded), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 19:48 (twenty years ago)

I have no idea what is going on.

I haven't even made it past the first disc of the Rinse Sessions yet.

How about a POX:Grime/dubstep 2005? I think that could be useful. I only heard Duppy and Request Line last month and feel that they're worthy of inclusion.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 19:49 (twenty years ago)

(and hi Julio, how are you?)

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 19:50 (twenty years ago)

There's grime in 2006?

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 20:08 (twenty years ago)

fuck this genre
why is it still going?
keep it on the pirates and off the records and anywhere else
these guys are shit rappers*
producers are shit**

*except dizzee
**except dizzee and wiley

grimeisshit, Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:41 (twenty years ago)

haha!

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Happy New Year, grimeisshit!

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:52 (twenty years ago)

SHIT genre, i cant believe its january 2006 and its still here for another fucking year. cant these guys stop trying to make it now, give up their job, go back to college or go back to collecting the dole (full time i mean, half of them prob do still collect job seekers). or at least take some music lessons? davinches mia remix is singlehandedly better than anything that idiot released under his own name. which just proves these guys dont even respect their own scene or have a low view of it that borders on trhe one dimensional. i LOL at those pics of him in his cd booklet (laughably titled the legacy) trying to look like a big glasses-wearing big time american producer. give it up mate. anyway, as ive said before, please make it go away.

grimeisshit, Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:01 (twenty years ago)

Oy.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:26 (twenty years ago)

I mean... "OI!!!!"

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:27 (twenty years ago)

yes, let's talk about The Legacy. I haven't heard it yet.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:28 (twenty years ago)

"oi oi" no?

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:29 (twenty years ago)

risky roads 2
practice hrs 2

i know matt did the titles for PH2 but on first glance it felt a bit, well dull. although the titles looked well ahead of the rest of the game. i guess it seemed like a lot of interviews, and i find those the most boring bits. i prefer stuff like when they just go somewhere and say "here we are going somewhere" rather than "where we see ourselves in 5 yrs time". there are some good freestyles there tho but i havent seen enough

risky roads 2 is pretty budget in comparison, production wise. i think it is even more shoddy title wise than RR1! but theres a pretty good mixed bag there, including jammer spitting on a shadetek beat!!!!!!
some good footage of jammer doing murkle man at young man standing. theres also 2 free cds. there was the argument already about risky roads 1 on dissensus, but im gonna go with luka and say 2 dvds, 2 cds (which are both pretty decent! better than the maximum one on RR1 i think), id go for that in the first instance.

or, like m,e just go for both.

as for tunes. well i dont know shit. i bought bruza "doin me" cos i thought the beat was phenomenal, but its probbably 1000 weeks old. also bought the young dot 2 ep but when it arrived, couldnt remember why. i want request line anyway, and still have no idea where i can hear duppy. any ideas?

if you want to see skream, email DMZ and get on their coach to leeds on feb 4th. then you can meet up with me, cos im going!

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 23:26 (twenty years ago)

lets predict whats on practice hours 2:
miscellaneous 2 bit grime artist -
'boiii... im just working on my album, mans got bare beats, bare tunes, just waiting for the right time. peeps arent ready for this get me!'
second miscellaneous 2 bit grime artist -
'well boiii... im just working on my album, mans got bare beats, bare tunes, bare bars, just waiting for the right time. peeps arent ready for this get me!'
then there will be shit handheld camera work, shit editing, shit questions asked, shit answers, and overall it will be shit. case closed.

grimedvdsareshit, Tuesday, 10 January 2006 23:45 (twenty years ago)

nytimes article

do you think wiley reads articles like that and, while he's doing it, without really noticing, stabs himself in the arm with a fork a few times?

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 00:32 (twenty years ago)

adam I've not much idea, ws just listening to Logan's show on Kiss (just the first few mins when I posted the thread, and for the first time in ages...and I've only heard mac10's show on rinse the one time) and wondering what people were feeling (if anything). Besides we needed a grime thread for the year so here we are..

ambrose I don't think I've noticed that Bruza tune so you're ahead of me ho ho.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 12 January 2006 10:27 (twenty years ago)

Julio, heres a real audio clip from uptown. its got an instrumental on it too, im not really feeling bruzas lyrics on it.

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:31 (twenty years ago)

For some reason evil uptown won't let me play that but I found a clip elsewhere - thanks, little squealing sounds I'm always positive about.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 12 January 2006 13:09 (twenty years ago)

bruza is shit.
really really really shit.

bruzaisshit, Thursday, 12 January 2006 13:14 (twenty years ago)

so glad this thread doesn't have 'Rolling' in the title.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 12 January 2006 13:32 (twenty years ago)

really into tthat sort of sax shriek thing on the bruza tune.

is grimeisshit the dude who writes grimewatch for vice?

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 12 January 2006 14:10 (twenty years ago)

i fucking wish.

that grime wasnt shit.*

*and also that vice would give me a job.

grimeisshit, Thursday, 12 January 2006 14:44 (twenty years ago)

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 12 January 2006 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Dubstep Warz!!!

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 14:53 (twenty years ago)

JME mixtape, Newham mixtape, Guns & Roses Vol 2. . . *drooools*

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:08 (twenty years ago)

How THE FUCK I slept on this whole genre (Dubstep, more than Grime) for so long I don't know. wtf!

It feels like the potential fulfilment of all the promise latent in most of the the digi-dub I've ever heard right now (not to mention the elusive Industrial/IDM/Reggae crossover!!).

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 19 January 2006 22:44 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, I think I'm really on the hype bus for this... It's unexpected. I must really have a problem with underwhelming-to-bad/cliche rapping to have been put off Grime so much thus far. And Pitchfork's only been promoting this for like the last year or longer. Humble Pie & total embarrasment all round.

fandango (fandango), Friday, 20 January 2006 06:10 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry but that Doctor CD was truly awful. I think that put me off grime for ages after I got it. Has anybody heard anything from Essentials lately?

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 20 January 2006 10:24 (twenty years ago)

They are playing at the whitechapel art gallery next month.

http://www.whitechapel.org/content.php?page_id=2328

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 January 2006 11:49 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
some good tunes on the 1XTRA shows lately:

Fireworks feat Kele Le Roc - "Some Other Girl"
wised-up man-dissing diva tune with fierce strings
"first I didn't know, but now I know, there are no more excuses for messing around with some other gi-rl, some other girl..."

Blackjack feat Flirta D - "Shoot Em Up"
the most consistent prolific MC of the past 2 years over strangely sweet chopped-up female "shoot em up" backing - like some 70's dream

Triple, Faction G & Amy King - "Real Love" (Aftershock)
most hauntingly beautiful femme backing harmonies in ages - thru misty veils

Slicks feat Merkston - "No Base"
good grime production from my fave Ruff Sqwad MC

Paleface - "Karma"
my fave bassline garage tune
other good 4/4 includes Riddler - "Reach Out" and Charlie Sez - "Flatline"

DJ Tubby - "Tiger Style 06" (Braindead)
eerie instru

also good grimstrumentals from Clue Kid and Cotti

Paul (scifisoul), Monday, 6 February 2006 00:05 (twenty years ago)

oh and Scandalous Unlimited feat Carly Bond & Purple - "My Life" finally got released to vinyl !

Paul (scifisoul), Monday, 6 February 2006 01:13 (twenty years ago)

Aim High 3 OMG

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 6 February 2006 06:09 (twenty years ago)

Hype! Report Back!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 6 February 2006 07:04 (twenty years ago)

I have it as one big long track. Like the last one, the beats sound smoother than yr average. Beats very consistent. Um. Riko destroys. Nice R&G bits (Grythm and Blues?). I donno I like it a lot. The Ruff Sqwad parts are weird. The songs @ 46 mins. rules.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 6 February 2006 08:15 (twenty years ago)

*song that is. I have trouble talking about grime. I think what I like about the Aim High's is how wide the emotional palette is in the production.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 6 February 2006 08:26 (twenty years ago)

"I think what I like about the Aim High's is how wide the emotional palette is in the production. "

Sssh deej if you capture it that succinctly I'm hardly gonna be able to spend ten pages talking about it in 12 months time!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 6 February 2006 11:37 (twenty years ago)

yes... all the many pastel shades betwixt mildly pensive and bedwetting.

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Monday, 6 February 2006 12:40 (twenty years ago)

oh be quiet you

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 6 February 2006 12:42 (twenty years ago)

you love it u slag.

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Monday, 6 February 2006 12:45 (twenty years ago)

i wish i could quit you

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 6 February 2006 12:46 (twenty years ago)

Haha actually rtc is OTM, although he makes it sound : (

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 6 February 2006 15:32 (twenty years ago)

JME mixtape is excellent!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Paul, is there lots of girly stuff on the radio just now? cos my theory is that '06 is the year the ladies reassert their tastes in London, which could be a very good thing...

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 01:29 (twenty years ago)

http://www.wackypackages.org/stickers/7th_series/grime-heavy_small.jpg

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 01:35 (twenty years ago)

anyone planning to go to the dirty canvas night at whitechapel art gallery with essentials playing? its a week on friday. the same night, but later theres a whole bunch of people playing at stright outta bethnal at the 333, and thursday night eskimo dance is back in watford!!!! the last one was, what, 2 years ago?

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 09:30 (twenty years ago)

cough.

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 15:07 (twenty years ago)

I also like:
DJ Luck & Bigfoot feat Kele Le Roc - "A Thousand Years"
(blast-from-past producers' frisky, saxy 2-step pop)

T.S. Heritage vs Damian Marley - "All Night"
(biggup Toby!)

and "Karma" is in the shops.
re: r'n'g in 2006, Jacob let's hope so!

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 01:14 (twenty years ago)

I posted this on the rolling country thread:

I just listened to the grime compilation Run the Road Vol. 2, and the remix of Sway's "Up Your Speed" cops the bass riff that John McVie uses on "The Chain"'s ending rave-up. The Sway track plays the riff on some orchestral-type keyboard setting, so the sound is of an ominous orchestral motif rather than the big-bouncing bottom that it is on the Fleetwood Mac album. (I'm wondering if there might not be some intermediate track post-FM and pre-Sway that uses the riff and might be Sway's [or his remixer's] immediate source.)

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 06:37 (twenty years ago)

Anyone go to Dirty Canvas in the end?

From hold tight's cough: Like drum ā€˜n’ bass a decade ago, grime is cross-fertilising all over the place to produce new and, frankly startling, music.

More cross-fertilising here.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 12:23 (twenty years ago)

I suppose this is very old news but Roll Deep Presents Grimey ?

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:44 (twenty years ago)

Yeah it's out everywhere apparently (Tower had copies.) I've not heard the mix, but I have heard almost everything on it. Lots of classics. The Shadetek Heavey Meckle mix is fantastic btw. I can wholeheartedly recommend it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:57 (twenty years ago)

no, it's quite new, even though most of the tracks are v old. at first i couldnt quite work out what 'dmc' had to do with it, like haha ARE THEY TURNTABLIZING IT OMG?!?? but i see there this dmc makes all the back to mine type comps so this must be a long-awaited grime primer cd! ... rendered utterly pointless by the mixtapey urban-obscure image its made itself. truly useless marketing quite a cute selecky tho i must say

rtcotm (mwah), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:03 (twenty years ago)

whaa i put paragraphs in there i swear? (tsk alex ur always up shadetek's poxy arse, next you'll be saying the bug's new cd is really ace or something)

rtcotm (mwah), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:06 (twenty years ago)

i know i put paras in that time, what gives!

rtcotm (mwah), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:07 (twenty years ago)

maybe the 'grime is shit' crew are messing w/yr posts?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:09 (twenty years ago)

"(tsk alex ur always up shadetek's poxy arse, next you'll be saying the bug's new cd is really ace or something)" Haha I already have SAID that. ;0

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:10 (twenty years ago)

??? Weird?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:10 (twenty years ago)

(I'm wondering if there might not be some intermediate track post-FM and pre-Sway that uses the riff and might be Sway's [or his remixer's] immediate source.) frank and other americans: 'the chain' is probably better known in england as the theme tune to tv coverage of formula one motorcar racing, hence the sample is not such a great leap for grime minds as may appear. maybe everyone knew that already.

rtcotm (mwah), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:12 (twenty years ago)

ha alex i must admit i knew that already, but really what makes u think anyone outside d*ssensus is gonna bite! that reminds me, i must pop out and find out how bad statik's 'grindie' mixtape is

rtcotm (mwah), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:16 (twenty years ago)

Haha it's true the grime heads (and the dancehall heads) on ILM are few and far between these days. Sigh.
The "grindie" mixtape looks not so good. :(

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:23 (twenty years ago)

did u see jme is following up 'shhh hhhut yr mouth volume 1' with 'pooooomplex edition 2'! jme is funny.

rtcotm (mwah), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Haha no. I liked "shhh hhhut yr mouth volume 1". I would have liked it more if it was someone other than JME heh.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:28 (twenty years ago)

Is the Tinchy Strider mixtape worthwhile? Unfortunately "Uptown Girl" is on it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:31 (twenty years ago)

hmm thats kind of a strange way of looking at it! i guess i agree maybe that someone else would have had a bit more um... longevity? but usually when i put it on (or more likely the odd individual tracks) i've set myself up to have A Jme Moment that lasts as long as it does and then it's over. 'awoh' is probably my predictable fave, but it still doesnt quite hit the spot 100% like 'serious' maybe did

rtcotm (mwah), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:36 (twenty years ago)

Don't get me wrong I quite like it a lot and the production is uniformly great so I can forgive the fact that JME himself can get a bit wearying after a while. But I definitely find myself wishing at times that there was a bit more variety to it (it's nice that most of the cameo's come at the end though, that alleviates it somewhat)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:46 (twenty years ago)

Went to Rinse FM on Sunday. http://static.flickr.com/39/109382954_bb43036a63.jpg That's Riko on the right. Heard some new Wiley stuff, there was a track with all these weird glockenspiel melodies that sounds incredible

lesgeorges, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:48 (twenty years ago)

i think it's just that thing where 'mixtape' basically gets used as a weak excuse for something or other more useful, like 'ehhh almost an album but wait can i ride this random dipset beat and stick wiley's single on the end, cheers', i mean i know its all a part of the woo gritty urban game of keeping things bubbling or whatever but it is singularly unsatisfying sometimes. especially with jme cos u also have a nice opposition with skepta very pointedly orientating himself for a proper album release by the looks of it (BTW I REALLY DONT WANNA TALK ABOUT HOW ALL GRIME ALBUMS ARE SHIT AND CANNOT CAPTURE THE CUNTINUUM AGAIN ETC OKTHNX)

rtcotm (mwah), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:56 (twenty years ago)

haha look even down to the les georges leningrad nod, a blinding bit of parody

rtcotm (mwah), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:59 (twenty years ago)

anyway basically i really like wot skepta's been up to lately, while also resenting a bit how much of a no-brainer statement it is. wiley's new stuff is oh-k and the murkle man rmx will do. and i think thats all i know now tbh

rtcotm (mwah), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:02 (twenty years ago)

Is there a random Dipset beat on it?

The weirdest thing about the JME mixtape is that it's not really a mixtape at all! It's not mixed! All the songs sound completely finished! If there is a real album proper out there for JME, I can't imagine it sounding much different than this.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:05 (twenty years ago)

yeah, exactly. i know its no different in rap either but even then when i see ppl putting uh-oh young jeezy's mixtape and not young jeezy's album up on thier end of year lists it's some bullshit at the end of the day

zee random dipset beat is 'certified badman' = jim jones 'certified gangsters'. (now who sez i'm hollertronix)

rtcotm (mwah), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:08 (twenty years ago)

man i am getting well inspired by that hopeful sunlight streaming thru the rinse fm cell bars! is that where roll deep are living til they get their show back

rtcotm (mwah), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:11 (twenty years ago)

track id:

JME at 333 kept on doing this tune which was really loping, slow ywaning beats, very little else on top[ except bass and beats, with "boy better know" lyrics on top. er cant really remember anything else as i was wrecked but chantelle played it hten he did it live. i bet its called "boy better know". isnt there a mix tape of his called er... "boy better know"????!?!

shit what the fuc kam i talking about

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 10:55 (twenty years ago)

haha u were wrecked? ... that sounds like its 'awoh'!

Does anybody know which producers use fruity? I'm curious...

Fruity loops = true ghetto technology.

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 9 March 2006 07:20 (twenty years ago)

skepta and JME use fruity loops.

captain easychord (captain easychord), Thursday, 9 March 2006 10:05 (twenty years ago)

Hell yeah. But what is it?

Is Davinche & Sadie's "Let Me Take You Away" from 2006? Cos I love it! So fluttery but with Davinche's typical egocentric big kicks and stern orchestra stabs. I'm so predictable!

Does rob them co hate it?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 6 May 2006 12:19 (twenty years ago)

I love how Trim has been calling himself "Trimothy" on some tracks.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 7 May 2006 12:52 (twenty years ago)

been terrible about keeping up lately - I do want to hear all the Richie and Cameo shows, cos there's always something good, but half the best tunes don't even get released on vinyl now. there's usually only about 5-10 brilliant tunes per year, although those tend to be the best of ANY genre.

some tunes I'd buy on sight:

Bashy Girls feat Doctor - "R U Ready" (LEGENDARY!!!)
Davinche feat Bashy & Katie Pearl - "Prying"
Fireworks feat Kele Le Roc - "Some Other Girl"
Kele Le Roc - "A Thousand Years"
Blackjack feat Flirta D - "Shoot Em Up"
Triple, Faction G & Amy King - "Real Love" (Aftershock)
DPM feat Flirta D - "Control" (this does my head in)

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 7 May 2006 15:10 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
got the new semtex compilation. its okay. quite good til it gets into the slower boring grime 3/4 of the way through. still dont like d double signal. that beat sounds like something from an underground indie rap producer, all stiff, grey and pretty damn boring.
