Is this a new low for NME? or is this album one of the great debuts of all time?

The Spanking Monkey, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 11:30 (twenty years ago)

i haven't heard it, have you?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 11:33 (twenty years ago)

The street team: play me at nights they won't act right/ Understand this is smooth shit that murderers move with.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 11:33 (twenty years ago)

i haven't heard it, have you?
-- Theorry Henry (miltonpinsk...), January 11th, 2006.

I am at a mates place listening to it after downloading it on his mac and i think its shit.

The SpankingMonkey, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 11:51 (twenty years ago)

egads. well, to be fair, the backlash had LOTS of momentum before NME reviewed the album.

gspm (gspm), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 13:30 (twenty years ago)

The other tracks would have to be very good to make up for the dull singles.

mei (mei), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 13:36 (twenty years ago)

I liked the 'dancefloor' single (i.e. the three tracks)

Today I played "Fake Tales" off a various artists CD, wasn't all that impressed.

So, it might be great. I hold out hope it's at least better than the KFChiefs.

Hahahahahaha

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 15:32 (twenty years ago)

I like them, They are better then the Kasiers fairs fair though even if you like this kind of thing 8/10 sounds about right. 10/10 is just daft. I don't think it's better then something like Up The Bracket. Johnny Boy's debut deserve's a 10 more than WYSIATWIN.

MitchellStirling (MitchellStirling), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 15:37 (twenty years ago)

hey at least they play real> instruments!

rizzx, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 15:38 (twenty years ago)

I refuse to accept that "WYSIATWIN" is an acceptable shortening of that album title.

Mugged Outside the Jabberjaw, 1993 (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Wysia Twin?

Oh yes it is!

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

hey at least they play real> instruments!

If I smack you over the head with a drum machine, you'll know how REAL that is when you come to in the hospital!

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

no, i want real drums. no real drums, no smashing

rizzx, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 15:57 (twenty years ago)

it should be WPSIA TWIN

MitchellStirling (MitchellStirling), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Arctic Monkeys are not a ten. Their album is good but it should not get a ten. NME is just crazy in hype about them. I bet they're overrating this album so that they can underrate the next one. Or maybe they just love creating a new prodigy-boy every week.

Caroline loves stars, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Dirty Pretty things' album is set to get eleven.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 16:36 (twenty years ago)

i heard that one dancefloor song...it was pretty good.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 16:45 (twenty years ago)

it's a great tune, knocks you for six like that junior senior one a coupla years back, or early libertines. saw them on TV (jools holland) and thought their other songs were a bit weak. a one-trick pony?

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 17:02 (twenty years ago)

ROOM ON FIRE = the last 10/10 that i can recall.

means fuck all, CARTER UNSTOPPABLE SEX MACHINE's 30SOMETHING got 10/10 too in like 91 or whatever.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:08 (twenty years ago)

whoa wait, Johnny Boy has an LP out?

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Room on Fire got a 9. The Grey Album got a 10 as did Is This It and Eve's Scorpion

MitchellStirling (MitchellStirling), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Eve? wtf? anyway, this album is quite good, but having d/led many earlier songs, there's the usual criticism (see Wolf Parade & Babyshambles albums): 1. earlier rougher demos were superior versions 2. odd track choices in terms of what's left on / out.

One thing that tires very quickly about this album is that every lyric relates to being drunk and 17.

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:34 (twenty years ago)

So did Johnny Cash's Unearthed and that War Child charity album thing.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:35 (twenty years ago)

ROOM ON FIRE = the last 10/10 that i can recall.

whoa. that is one bad call.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:39 (twenty years ago)

It (Room on fire) got 5 stars in Q and Mojo iirc It's the 'Be here now' syndrome.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:44 (twenty years ago)

Except Oasis were always shit (couldn't resist).

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:46 (twenty years ago)

goddamn what is with you limeys

latebloomer: Let's just say I do for bullshit what Stonehenge did for Rocks (lat, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:49 (twenty years ago)

Definitely not a ten. But NME is mostly wrong these days.

Stephen C (ihope), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Isn't the title a quote from Saturday Night, Sunday Morning, Arthur Seaton's opening gambit in front of the mirror?

Shooz (shooz), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Mam called me barmy when I told her I fell of a gasometer for a bet. But I'm not barmy, I'm a fighting pit prop that wants a pint of beer, that's me. But if any knowing bastard says that's me I'll tell them I'm a dynamite dealer waiting to blow the factory to kingdom come. Whatever people say I am, that's what I'm not because they don't know a bloody thing about me! God knows what I am.

Shooz (shooz), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 20:11 (twenty years ago)

that dancefloor song reminded me of what franz ferdinand might sound like if they were early foo fighters...with a touch of mclusky.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 20:12 (twenty years ago)

It (Room on fire) got 5 stars in Q and Mojo iirc It's the 'Be here now' syndrome.
-- Billy Dods (butterbubble...), January 11th, 2006.

mm, only the strokes never quite had that 'selling out knebsoworth'/'having fans' moment.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 20:13 (twenty years ago)

it's ridiculous. it's more like a five. good single, tho.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 20:15 (twenty years ago)

NME still exists?

pauncho, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 20:32 (twenty years ago)

yeah it is amazing i know. it's like a printed wax museum.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Soviet Panda - re: Johnny Boy, you might wanna check the Johnny Boy thread. There might be an active YSI in there if you're curious.

gspm (gspm), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:24 (twenty years ago)

thanks for the link sean. i already hit up oink for it

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:27 (twenty years ago)

oh, and I still like Room on Fire

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

The Guardian have given in 5 stars...
http://www.guardian.co.uk/filmandmusic/story/0,16373,1684716,00.html

...and brought in the whole Oasis thing as well. I, for one, can't see this at all, except for the hype and the fact that they come from northern England? If I wanted to compare the AMs with anyone it would be Kings of Leon. I get that kind of buzz from listening to them both. Can't really articulate it though... Something like a lightness of touch completely lacking in Oasis. Make any sense?

Anyway from what i've heard of it - about half - it's four (maybe four and a half) stars. Pretty damn good.

Ned T.RIfle II (Ned T.Rifle II), Friday, 13 January 2006 10:35 (twenty years ago)

i like it.

Rich (Stinkin Rich), Friday, 13 January 2006 11:22 (twenty years ago)

Meanwhile, Arctic Monkeys' sound is based entirely on music from the past five years. The laconic, distorted vocals bear the influence of the Strokes. The choppy punk-funk guitars have been filtered through Franz Ferdinand, the frantic rhythms and dashes of ska come via the Libertines. Turner's refusal to tone down his dialect probably wouldn't have happened without the Wearside-accented Futureheads.

fucking laughable.

thrill to the NOW SOUNDS of the strokes why don't you. cunts.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 13 January 2006 11:23 (twenty years ago)

i would also compare them with the kings of leon, yes.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 13 January 2006 11:23 (twenty years ago)

A MAGAZINE DONATED SOME MONKEYS TO ARCTICA???

Daniel Miller (mad man miller), Friday, 20 January 2006 20:55 (twenty years ago)

STREET TEAM!!!!!!!

I quite like the singles (esp Dancefloor which is magnificent), not sure how great the album will be though. It's unlikely to be a 10 but the NME were alwats gonna give it at least 9.

Cracks (Crackity), Friday, 20 January 2006 21:21 (twenty years ago)

cool wi'dat

mongelois (fandango), Friday, 20 January 2006 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Street Team ? No, I don't think the record companie would hire morons like these.

snowballing (snowballing), Friday, 20 January 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

The Arctic Monkeys' first album will be the fastest selling rock debut ever, say industry experts.

HMV report that pre-orders of Whatever You Say That I Am, That’s What I’m Not, which is released on Monday, are the highest for any new rock act since Oasis' Definitely Maybe in 1994.

However, the store thinks the Sheffield band will break the Oasis record by selling more in shops in its first week.

HMV's Gennaro Castaldo said: “There has been a great vibe around the Arctic Monkeys for quite a few months now, but it usually takes much longer for a band to develop mainstream appeal and the commercial success that comes with it.

“The Arctic Monkeys seem to have managed this in just one leap – it’s amazing how much impact they have had in such a short time.”

hey Dom can you explain the whole daterape indie thing? are you saying that the groups sewem like the date raping types or that it's the perfect music to date rape to?

pscott (elwisty), Saturday, 21 January 2006 19:18 (twenty years ago)

sewem = seem or perhaps sound...

come on Dom, you can't just throw "daterape" around like that, a street-teamer might be watching...

pscott (elwisty), Saturday, 21 January 2006 19:26 (twenty years ago)
