Berlin 2006

I'm going to be spending a couple of months in Berlin during spring and I just realized I dont know much about Berlin when it comes to music. What's the music scene there like? Who are the defining acts? I'm guessing the city is mostly defined by electronic music, but what kind?

Just educate me. Tell me what's hot and what I should listen to.

alma, Monday, 23 January 2006 00:34 (twenty years ago)

what's hot is and may always be techno. which isn't as dreary as it sounds. the techno being made these days is often strange and loopy and adventurous. of course some of it is terribly dreary. you could start with a couple of threads on german techno producers that we've got.

Kompakt: Search und Destroy - Teil Drei

Pantytec - in New York tonight

but, basically -- geeta to thread?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 23 January 2006 00:56 (twenty years ago)

thanks. I'll look through those. just glancing over the first one and I'm familiar with some of the names...

alma, Monday, 23 January 2006 01:10 (twenty years ago)

momus to thread, too? he lived there for awhile, as a musician.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 23 January 2006 01:23 (twenty years ago)

bump

Also look out for the whole Richie Hawtin / Ricardo Villalobos / Magda axis, whio if not actually from Berlin, live there at the moment - like many other people such as brits Steve Barnes (Process, Cosmic Sandwich) and Ewan Pearson.

One of the long-standing labels in Berlin is Bpitch Control: label boss Ellen Allien is one to look out for in particular, but the label also has quality acts like Thomas Andersson and Kiki.

There are loads and loads more though.

The thing to bear in mind with the Berlin club scene is that later is better, clubs may start at 11pm, but won't really start kicking off until 4am, and the real action is at the after-cubs which start at 8am, or the after-after clubs which start in the afternoon... You could always just get up early in the morning and then go clubbing first thing if the idea of staying up that late put you off!

Noch ein bier Bitte (Can I have another Beer please)
Ich Naime Ein... (I would like a...
Cuntah Ich Bitsalen (Can I pay)
Cunnen Weir Bitsalen (Can We Pay)

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 11:38 (twenty years ago)

Clubs to check out: Berghain, Watergate, Weekend. Chewshabadoo, can you recommend any after-/after-after clubs? Never been to those & as an ageing guy would like to try skipping the staying up late part.

two weeks pass...
any other tips?

will be checking de:bug, zitty, shops, fliers, staff etc...

but is anything going on this week that may not be techno related? arty, cultural, whatever really!

(yes, I know there's that thing with the balls, the kicking & the grass. I'm really trying to forget...)

any ilx0rs resident/visiting hit up my email for coffee, FAP or ______ (german word for all that I will remember from phrasebook from last time)!

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

What's CLUB 103 like btw? It has Carl Craig on whilst I'm there...

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

I'm profoundly alienated by all this techno talk. Ritchie Hawtin means nothing to me. I live in Berlin, but I follow a totally different musical agenda. This week that includes two events, noise folk and contemporary:

1. -----noise---folk----concert----

----ish marquez (nyc. anti-folk)---
-------turner cody (nyc. anti-folk)---
----------fancie (berlin. folk folk)---
------thanksgiving (portland, folk)-----
---------cloud kiva (berlin, drone)--
------unchained (solo guitar psych)------
-- super bomber band (mystery schism)------

-----tuesday----6 june 2006---21:00 hrs------

----RaumErweiterungsHalle on the wall strip-----
-------RaumErweiterungsHalle auf dem Mauerstreifen----

---Bernauer/Brunnenstr.----U-Bhf Bernauer Str. (U8/M10)---
---damage----5 euros

2. Die Grüne Hölle

von Bernhard Gal

Galerie der Österreichischen Botschaft Berlin
8. Juni, 18.00 (Eröffnung)

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 11:26 (nineteen years ago)

Also, the Sonambiente Festival is going on. Nobody called "DJ Somebodyorother" is playing. Just people with one name followed by another.

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 11:30 (nineteen years ago)

what's happening later this month - 23rd-25th?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 11:42 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, Momuspaws.

I know there is more to Berlin than Techno too (that's what I'm hoping this thread will enlighten me of!) I will look out for that thanks :)

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

first off:
bye=tchuss, not choos.

second:
go to the comic book store and museum. i forget its name, but it is a fucking amazing place with shitloads of old comics to look at and a good deal of new stuff. Atak's Wondertute is great in terms of the newer stuff.

trees (treesessplode), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

no, it's tschuss

rizzx (Rizz), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

are you talking about neurotitan, that is one amazing place. x-post

Jena (JenaP), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

isn't it tschüss? if we're going to be pedantic about it, like.

i wanna go back to berlin but world cup + love parade = no chance of a cheap early-summer visit. :(

permanent revolution (cis), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

No wai! I'm going to Neurotitan on Saturday :D (thought Groberunfug was the Comic store? maybe this do is just near it...)

Tonight DJ Pinch & I can't remember what else now... might chill a little & keep something in reserve.
Tomorrow Sashcha Funke, Fairmont Live, Metope, Ark...
Weekend Jammer & Shadetek, Gabriel Ananda (live), Dominik Eulberg, Andre Galluzzi, maybe even a little Carl Craig.

ROFL!

Gonna need a proper meal at some point, anyone know of a good restaurant in Kreuzberg?

Man I am NOT coming back anytime soon if I can help it :0

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 8 June 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

I will be in Berlin from June 22-28.

what's happening later this month - 23rd-25th?

Watergate on the 23rd: http://www.water-gate.de/program/index.html. I am probably going to this.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 8 June 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, I meant the 24th! (although the 23rd also looks good)

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 8 June 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

I love how the show Momus posted about has both folk and anti-folk on the same night, in the same place. Something about positive charges and negative charges and the room exploding?

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 8 June 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

BarryB I'm here till end of June (at least) e-mail if you fancy hooking up with random ilx0r internet freaks & all that.

fandango (fandango), Sunday, 11 June 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 11 June 2006 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

fandango (fandango), Monday, 12 June 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

Any ILXors in Berlin between 28th July and 6th August? Drop me a mail if you're up for dancing/FAPage/coffee!

Suggestions for things to do/see would also be much appreciated - especially art and non-techno music stuff (Momus?). I'm pretty sketchy on good places to eat too..

I think I'm down with what's going on club-wise. I'm hoping to catch Luciano, Serafin, Superpitcher, Sascha Funke, and My My if I can. Where else in the world could you get all that in the space of a week? :)
