Though I have never been that big of a fan of Martin Carr's bravecaptain stuff there has been some great moments. So it pains me that he has to give away his record in order for people to hear/listen to it. Hopefully it's amazing stuff that people will demand on CD, one can dream, anyways here is some info:

http://www.bravecaptain.co.uk

free bravecaptain album!

'distractions', the new bravecaptain album, is released on monday 30 january.

the album will be available free of charge in download form only, with wav and high quality mp3 formats available for each of the eight tracks.

the idea of releasing this album in this way is to make bravecaptain's music freely available to as many people as possible, in order to enable the bravecaptain fanbase to continue to grow.

the album itself is arguably bravecaptain's best - a succession of beautifully crafted pop songs presented in an mixture of styles.

from the stripped down beauty of 'it's what we make it' through the electro-pop 'oh you' to the addictive venom of the bravecaptain vs akira the don closer 'jerusalem', 'distractions' is a diverse and engaging collection of songs...

If you were a fan of what Sice did with his sole album, Eggman, then you should love Paperlung. There are some demo’s up on the web site but here is the good news:

http://www.paperlung.com

Paperlung spent a few days last week in a north London studio recording two tracks for their debut single.

Initially, one track will be released in download only form through Shifty Disco This will probably be in mid-February.
A month later, both tracks will be available on CD.

A string of live dates are being planned for around that time (mid-march), and there is a launch party/gig in the planning stages for a London venue.

Keep checking the website for updated details and track listing.

yay!

I've got all the bravecaptain and Paperlung stuff that has been available for download, and *none* of it is even close to sniffing at the coat-tails of the Boo Radleys. This saddens me. Paperlung > bravecaptain though, which surprises me, since Carr was the driving force of the Boos.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 30 January 2006 00:51 (nineteen years ago)

He was the driving force...bu Sice, ultimately, was the voice. He just sings it better.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 30 January 2006 01:35 (nineteen years ago)

'the idea of releasing this album in this way is to make bravecaptain's music freely available to as many people as possible, in order to enable the bravecaptain fanbase to continue to grow.'

that'll be the artic monkeys effect then...

Robin Goad (rgoad), Monday, 30 January 2006 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, Ned, singing voice = all that matters. Er, maybe not...

bravecaptain's stuff just seems so weak compared to what Carr used to be able to write. I don't think Sice singing it would make it better.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

So is this free release any good?

I totally agree with that but can't dismiss all of it as he has put out as he has had some good songs since becoming bravecaptian. Some that come to mind from The Fingertip Saint Sessions are "Tell Her You Want Her," "Hermit Versus The World" and probably my favorite song he has done since the Boos "Go With Yourself." From 2004?s All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace some standouts include title track, "Every Word You Sound," "Weaponized" and a song featuring Sice called "Good Life."

Anyways I'm downloading this now for free now and will report back.

I forgot I had this thread but this one is more about bravecaptain then Paperlung but the link thread is where a member of Paperlung says hi, the power of ILM is unbelievable:

Sice the voice of the Boo Radleys is about to debut his new band

BeeOK (boo radley), Monday, 30 January 2006 23:56 (nineteen years ago)

Someone should do a "Pick only the good" from the Brave Captain catalog. I have a good chunk of it, but franky the poor stuff puts me off. BeeOK, how you placed?

I'll kick off:

From Fing1..

1. Raining Stones
2. That one about being a serious dude

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 09:08 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I can come up with more and know what you mean. I have listen to this new album and it is doing nothing for me, very sad. Anyways I will listen to some old stuff and this new album again and report back.

BeeOK (boo radley), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 09:20 (nineteen years ago)

I have great hopes for Paperlung because those three songs are amazing!

For those of you who are fans here is part of a recent interview, the third question and answer has to do with John Peel:

JC: 'Everything's Alright Forever' is my favourite Boo's album. It means an awful lot to me and every time I listen to it, I am transported back to a very specific time and place in my life. How does it make you feel when you hear that your music has played such a huge part in people's lives? What albums are important to you and why?

MC: Yeah, I love that. I don't understand that album at all, it means nothing to me and it's the only one but the fact that it means so much to somebody else makes me proud. As the years slip by more and more people show up with stories about how our records collided with their lives, how fucking wonderful is that? Albums that are important to me, that transport me to a different time would include the first Violent Femmes album, 'Isn't Anything', 'Yr Living All Over Me' and early eighties pop records, Human League, Duran Duran, XTC etc Stuff like that.

JC: For some reason, I never got around to buying the Boo's swansong album 'Kingsize'. Did I miss anything?

MC: I think so yeah, for many people that was our best album (puts up both hand in the back of the classroom). Creation didn't even bother with, they'd given up. It was partly our fault, we could have spent a lot less money making it. After the dust settled though it turned out to be a great record with some of the best songs that I wrote fror the Boos.

JC: I'm currently reading John Peel's autobiography and have come to the conclusion that although life goes on, the music industry in Britain will never see the likes of him again, and as a consequence of this, will never be as good. What are your views on this? Oh, and make me jealous by regaling me tales of your encounters with the great man.

MC: Yep, I just read that. There is no chance we'll ever see his like again. I was very sad when he died, it was so unexpected. John Peel was there at the beginning and at the literal end. When we had finished our first record in 1990 we sent loads of letters to Peel, pretending to be fans of the band and asking if he would play the new record (which we didn't even have copies of yet). This went on for some weeks until finally we had a copy which we sent him and he announced on the radio that he'd been getting these letters which he suspected were all written by the band (ha ha ha ha) and that he'd played the record and it was 'actually rather good' and then he played 'Catweazle'. We were living in separate flats in this big old Georgian house on Huskisson Street in Liverpool 8, I was listening to Peel with Tim in his room. While 'Catweazle' was being played at full blast I was jumping up and down on the bed, the girl from across the hall knocked loudly on the door and shouted that there was a phone call for me on the payphone in the hallway. I picked it up and said hello and there was Peel telling me that he was playing our record and would we like to come in for a session? We went out and got good and drunk that night.
Years later I read an article by Peel somewhere and he mentioned that he used to buy his NME at this newsstand in Hamilton Square. I used to work in Hamilton Square in the late eighties and had bought my NME from the very same stand. I thought it was a good idea for a song and 'The Old Newsstand at Hamilton Square' appeared on our next album 'Kingsize'.
Some time after that Sice and I made an awful journey up to Liverpool to tell Tim and Bob that the band was to break up. Shitty, bleak day, really sad. As Sice drove us back into London we switched Peel on to cheer us up. When we reached Junction Road in Archway near where I lived he told the story about him buying his NME at this little place in Birkenhead and started to play 'The Old Newsstand At Hamilton Square'. We parked the car in a side street and listened without a word.

Hello Simon! Glad you guys got a record deal and can’t wait to hear the new stuff. I wish I could catch you guys live but I’m in Los Angeles so it a little out of the way.

What Martin Carr said about Paperlung via the said interview (link above):

JC: Sice has a new band now called Paperlung. Have you heard any music or seen them live yet, and if so, what are they like? What are Tim and Bob up to these days?

MC: I've seen them twice and I really enjoyed it. They're big pop songs with a big voice from a little fella. His band are great, all jumpy around and young. Tim is a teacher (head of IT mind) in Ireland and Bob is in Manchester doing fuck knows.

Dog Latin said that the new bravecaptain was pretty good and should give it a try. I like it about 1000 times more than I did on the first listen, sounds like a grower.

BeeOK (boo radley), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

martin didn't like eggman i thought i remember him saying in an interview once. but he could have just been winding sice up. maybe it's the tim and bob that are missing and causing both of them to be awful? but maybe paperlung isn't going to be awful. bravecaptain is awful. like some moments he wants to be the super furry animals and others he wants to be neil young, both moments are painful.

keyth (keyth), Sunday, 19 February 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I liked the eggman album.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 20 February 2006 09:21 (nineteen years ago)

i think the problem with Martin is that over the years - even towards the end of the Boos - is that his influences had become almost painfully obvious. He's always been about mishmashing different styles together, and it's always been quite obvious what he was listening to at the time. But somehow he managed not to stray into the realms of tribute or parody on Giant Steps or even Wake Up.
C'mon Kids was great at the time but you can hear how much Britpop had affected the Boos (despite Carr's protestations in the interview upthread). Kingsize was an accomplished album but something about the quite ripping off of the "Richard D James Album" at the beginning is so willingly blatant it hurts. And I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY loved that album back then.

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Monday, 20 February 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

(RDJ Album I mean, although I quite liked Kingsize. Well it was the Boos, so I had to, but I never saw it as a masterpiece or anything).

A interview with Sice mainly about Paperlung:

http://eardrumsinterviews.blogspot.com/2006/05/interview-with-sice-ex-boo-radleys-now.html

BeeOK (boo radley), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 04:50 (nineteen years ago)

- I guess the Boo-connection is unavoidable when you are promoting your new band. Does this bother you? Is it a good or bad thing to have to talk about the past a lot when you probably want and need to focus on what's ahead of you as the singer in Paperlung? How do you cope with "old fan writers", like me? ;-)

Sice: I'm incredibly proud of having been in the Boo Radleys. I have no problem whatsoever discussing the past. There's plenty of room to talk about the past AND the future. My only problem for me, is coming to terms with the two ways that the Boo Radleys were viewed. People either see us as maverick pop geniuses who made some of the best, most eclectic albums ever - or those twats who did Wake Up Boo.

RIP bravecaptain

Got this in my mail box today:

one last hurrah 24:09:06

the last ever bravecaptain live show will take place on sunday 8 october at the luminaire on the kilburn high road in london.

whilst martin hasn't ruled out recording as bravecaptain again in the future it's clear that there won't be any new solo material in the forseeable future as martin frees up time to work on other projects.

the website continues of course, and we will soon be adding an improved mp3 shop containing a much larger archive of the bravecaptain back catalogue. we'll also keep you updated with news on martin's other work as and when stuff happens.

in the meantime do the right thing and get your ass to the kilburn high road on 8 october for the last ever bravecaptain live set!
