deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

Does anyone know what happened to St3lf0x? Is he still writing for PFork? There was some talk about him writing a book about creating a riddim. Is he doing that?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

that would be cool!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

i feel so out of it dancehall-wise.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

I'll send you stuff this weekend! I've been lax!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

I love dancehall, but I don't keep up. What are the hot beats?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

As I was saying the Reynolds' thread, I've heard some great stuff on Sweat Riddim (new Donovan Bennett) and Gangsta Rock riddim (esp. the fantastic "Bun Rapist" by Cecile--thanks to one of Shadetek guys for bigging that up).

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

Did you see Wayne Marshall's February 3rd posting on his blog? The reggae-riddims.com database site is apparently gone.

http://wayneandwax.blogspot.com/

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Friday, 3 February 2006 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

yes, apparently. though, as pointed out in a comment, the project is alive and well, taken up by some other germaicans.

w&w, Sunday, 5 February 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

Some other stuff (some late 2005, I guess) that I just discovered:

Eighty Five Riddim (Dave Kelly) excellent, as usual, Cham tune on this one
Wicked 2 Nite Riddim (Big Yard) Blacker & Macka Diamond seems to be the "hit" on this one
Old Truck Riddim (Steely & Clevie) more "old school" goodness
A bunch of retro-riddims (Baddis, Mudd Up, Bam Bam) abound too.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

if you send me some of this stuff i will be very much in your dept alex!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

i mean in your debt, not in your department.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

I will! I was meaning to this weekend, but then I got food poisoning and completely spaced everything.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

all up in yr dept

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

Roots Tonic Riddim, on some Swedish label, nice cuts by Luciano, Lady Saw, Anthony B.
Second Baby Cham on 85, and Cecile on Gangsta Rock.

Coffee and Cigarettes Guy (abu), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 23:34 (nineteen years ago)

I'm loving "Badman Forward" by Elephant Man.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 9 February 2006 05:20 (nineteen years ago)

Me too! I wonder when his new record is going to come out. It's been delayed since at least last summer :(

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

Eighty Five riddim seconded!
but I'm loving most Buju Banton - "Look Out Fi Dem" (Nookie Nookie riddim)

Paul (scifisoul), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

Concubine riddim's pretty nice

toe-foo (toe-foo), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 01:39 (nineteen years ago)

Concubine's been around for a while hasn't it? "Why" is really great.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

Any news on the upcoming Kartel album?

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

It's supposed to be out the week after next, I think. Still no official tracklist on the Greensleeves' site though.

That Buju track is fantastic, Paul!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 01:56 (nineteen years ago)

So this new Shaggy song with Barrington Levy - classic or classic?

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 02:52 (nineteen years ago)

The recut of "Here I Come"?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 03:03 (nineteen years ago)

"Broadway"

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 03:05 (nineteen years ago)

not a patch on the original obv but its pretty good

ham'ron (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 03:07 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah Barrington Levy redoes that song every couple of years heh. Is that a Bobby Konders' production?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 03:10 (nineteen years ago)

Not sure, sorry. (lazy excuse to bump thread)

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

Is there a Cecile LP yet?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

Nope and I haven't heard anything that indicates that one is soon to be in the offing.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

Beenie Man "Dem Get Heart Attack," actually heard about it from spizzazzz, good one.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

I think Beenie Man would make a great trumpet player. All that double & triple tonguing.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

(that's what she said etc.)

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently Baby Cham is supposed to have a new album out (on Atlantic) sometime this year. I predict M.I.A. will be on it haha.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:08 (nineteen years ago)

today's weird dancehall moment: the friggin' today show using the "egyptian" riddim as background music for a story on an egyptian museum.

ham'ron (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

Heh that's pretty strange.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

i was kind of hoping al roker would bust into "egyptian dance" but no such luck

ham'ron (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

Did he say "GOOD TO GO, SHIZZLE" haha?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

"And now your local weather. Time...less..."

ham'ron (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

dunno if Seeed's 'Ding' qualifies properly here but it's probably my favourite song of 2006.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 21 July 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

Hey,

What is that song about? All I'm seeing is results in German.

That's cuz it is German. Try the Germaican label. I think they have an english website.

New York Times
July 10, 2006
Music Review
Barrington Levy, an Inventor of Dancehall Reggae, Can Still Squeeze a Syllable and Wring It Dry
By KELEFA SANNEH

"Brooklyn, are you sleee-py?" Over and over again during Friday's concert in Prospect Park, the dancehall reggae pioneer Barrington Levy asked this singsong question. His voice is so sweet that the question almost sounded like the beginning of a lullaby. In fact, it was the opposite of one: the answer was always a resounding no.

The almost-free concert (fans were asked to pay $3) was part of Celebrate Brooklyn, an annual summer series known for drawing diverse acts and mellow crowds to the park. Too mellow, sometimes: it's hard to get riled up about anything when you're enjoying a breezy night under the trees and stars. But Mr. Levy, who has been a reggae star since 1979, plainly loves applause, and knows a thing or two about how to keep it coming.

Mr. Levy was among the first stars of dancehall reggae. The style, which has dominated Jamaican music since the 1980's, is built on heavy bass-and-drum-driven tracks; singers adapted by using more words and fewer notes. In "Shine Eye Gal," one of Mr. Levy's first hits, he complained about a fickle girlfriend by listing her many desires: "You want uptown, you want downtown/You want fancy car, you want superstar." Then he begged, "Tell me wha' you really wa-ah-ah-ah-ant."

That last, distended word is crucial: Mr. Levy is now known for a specific sort of melisma: he'll draw out a word or a sound by hopping a few intervals down the scale. Accordingly, the most famous word in his oeuvre is the sublime "whoa-oa-oh," from his hit "Here I Come." The second most famous? "Skiddly-waddily-iddily-diddily-diddily" (or something), from the same song. He resurrected both when he collaborated with Shyne on the 2000 hip-hop hit "Bad Boyz." And he pleased fans, serious and casual, by doing all of it — a short "Bad Boyz," a long "Here I Come," nonstop "whoa" and "skiddily" — during Friday's cheerful show.

Mr. Levy's career began as reggae stars were figuring out whether to be good guys or (to use the Jamaican term) bad men. He chose righteousness, but a lot of his best songs flirt with wickedness. "Murderer," which began Friday's set, might seem like a simple antiviolence song. But when he sings, "Dem a murrr-de-rah," what you really notice is how cool that last word sounds. (Needless to say, this lesson wasn't lost on many of his tough-talking successors.)

These days, this former upstart (he was born in 1964, and began recording as a teenager) is a respected veteran. And a man who did as much as anyone to make roots reggae sound old-fashioned now tells his audience, "You got to take it right back to the roots."

Some of his more pious newer songs lacked the spry charm of his mischievous old ones. And the middle of his set definitely sagged. (Part of the problem might have been that it was long enough to have a middle: dancehall reggae often sounds best in bursts.) But he kept waking up the nonsleepy crowd by returning to the classic dancehall songs that made his reputation. And before the encore, the crowd rewarded him with a spirited chant of: "We want more! We want more!" For at least one man in the park — one ma-ah-an — this was probably the highlight of the night.

rtccc (mwah), Friday, 21 July 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

'Ding' is about going out to clubs to pick up women but them threatening to tell yo wife so make sure you hide your wedding ring duh.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 24 July 2006 10:43 (nineteen years ago)

Goldfinger had the new Madhouse rhythm Stage Show... Pinchers with "The Enemies" and Cham with "Rude Boy Pledge"... odd rhythm but Dave Kelly can really do no wrong.

YSI????

Lmaoborghini (eman), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't been paying much attention to dancehall of late but these are things that I've heard and liked:

Intercom Reloaded (new Maximum Sound--Bounty Killer & Lukie D is very nice)
Inspector (the "big hits" on this seem weak--another "Ghetto Story" recut, subpar Sizzla to my ears--but the Lady Saw voicing is nice, Ele is also supposed to be good, I think)
Foundation aka Gully aka Tropical Storm (new Don Corleon, Buju is very good--as seems usual for him)
Breaking News (only heard Delly Ranx "Murderer")

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 02:25 (nineteen years ago)

Holy shit and the best of them all is the sick new Dave Kelly riddim STAGE SHOW!!!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 August 2006 04:01 (nineteen years ago)

I am now officially could not be more fucking excited about the new Baby Cham album.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 August 2006 04:18 (nineteen years ago)

I love Baby Cham. Never saw a copy of his double disc magnum opus from last time - was it any good?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 3 August 2006 04:20 (nineteen years ago)

Yes! The first disc (which is basically a collection of his best Dave Kelly singles) is incredible, easily one of my favorite dancehall full-lengths by itself. The second disc is significantly less incredible and I hardly ever listen to it although I seem to remember there being a couple of good tracks. Strangely the Cham/Dave Kelly collabs on the Foxy Brown record are much stronger than the one(s) on his own album so make of that what you will.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 August 2006 04:35 (nineteen years ago)

I always thought "Vitamin S" was secretly the best voicing on Fiesta.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 3 August 2006 04:56 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently that's on the new album too which is apparently dropping 8/15! Tracklist:

1. Ghetto Story
2. Tic Toc
3. Rude Boy Pledge
4. Bring It On
5. Don't Test Me
6. Wah Dem A Say Now?
7. Fat Punnany
8. Bad Boys
9. Boom Boom
10. Talk To Me
11. Vitamin S
12. Love It Like That
13. Girl
14. Cham
15. Ghetto Story Chapter 2 feat Alicia Keys
16. Ghetto Story Chapter 3
17. Bad Mind

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 August 2006 05:03 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
I am listening to the new Cham album now. It is sounding awfully good. "Tic Toc" is a classic cheery vibes Dave Kelly track, and Baby Cham is (thankfully) really the best DJ for Kelly productions, there's something incredibly generous about his broad baritone.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 20 August 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

To reiterate: what a fucking amazing album. So uplifting - no DJ is more consistently lovable than Cham, and no producer makes music more consistently joyful than Dave Kelly. There's something almost Disney-esque about his sound. I half expect all the animals in the jungle to start joining in.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 27 August 2006 08:52 (nineteen years ago)

what are the big riddims this summer?

mr. brojangles (sanskrit), Monday, 4 September 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

Foundation, Smash, Gully Slime, Stage Show...

Confounded (Confounded), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

I would like to hear someone take on The Pack's "Vans" beat -- that could be nice.

Confounded (Confounded), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

How's that Beenie Man lp that came out last week?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

I prepped a longer post which appears to have gotten lost, but here are some riddims which I've liked lately: Dem Time Deh (sick), Bullet, Bad Belly (Bellyas Pt 2), Sidewalk University (at least the Sizzla cut.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 03:23 (nineteen years ago)

Hey Jordan,

Undisputed is pretty good. Strengths are the more Jamaican tracks -- "Hmmm Hmmm" and "Come Again" on the Sweat riddim.

I'm not as into the American productions -- Scott Storch on "Dutty Wine Gal" and that crossover jam "Girls" with Akon.

Confounded (Confounded), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

Cool. Yeah, "Come Again" is the only one I've heard and it's amazing.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

Check out Capelton's "Toppa Tings" on that riddim -- ruffffffff.

Confounded (Confounded), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

can't say i enjoyed anything about that beenie album.

don't like much these days though, it has to be said.

rtccc (mwah), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

I'm really liking the song "Stookie" by QQ

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 23:00 (nineteen years ago)

stookie is cute! what else do i like

matterhorn & ward 21 on gully slime (miback miback miback mibloodclaatback reeeeeeeh)

assassin & pinchers on stage show

matterhorn on bad belly (weird! "now this is just my day in the moon / you thought that i was dreamin / i passed this old lady in her bathroom screamin /'the king is still alive!'/ i'm not the one who said it / well matterhorn just give them flows / shown to the edit / [echoing] my day on the moon ... the king is still alive! thought that i was dreamiiin... that-that i was dreamiiiin" wanky!)

bug out riddim, but it's only sleepy dog 2k6, and no killer versions besides the future troubles one that gets old quick

energy 2k6 (or maybe it's called the jasper?), but it's only global riddim part 2, even though thats easily the best riddim this year still. haha and no voicings exist yet, cool

smoke riddim, i guess (sounds like everything else around but the production is a touch above)

lucky coin riddim, i guess (quite... windtunnely!)

lenky's i-charm one, kinda good, kinda like um 'digeridoo' by aphex?!?, kinda never wanna hear it again

i'm really starting to resent corleone everywhere as well. SORRY! man it's just all one long military-dubstep complex at the moment. or is that just me? or am i asking the wrong clientele?

rtccc (mwah), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

also do i wanna check out jah mason's album? i saw ot the other day and it was called 'the princess diaries' or something!

rtccc (mwah), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

overheard jamaican dude asking for cham's new one and pronouncing it "shahm." all this time i thought it was "cam"

n e way keep it rolling. as u were

señor citizen (eman), Thursday, 7 September 2006 02:41 (nineteen years ago)

man it's just all one long military-dubstep complex at the moment. or is that just me? or am i asking the wrong clientele?

I already don't like you, but I'd love to know what you're talking about.

Confounded (Confounded), Thursday, 7 September 2006 23:33 (nineteen years ago)

suspect something along these lines (doesn't fully hold up but don't have time to improve it now):

dry, drab, technical/formalist, masculine, instrumental or militant, serious, linear - pinched, meagre, referencing futurism (e.g. techstep)

vs

splashy, vibrant, technicolour, feminine, handbag, exotic/bizarro, non-sequitor - fabuloso, being the future (e.g. two-step)

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 8 September 2006 00:01 (nineteen years ago)

"also do i wanna check out jah mason's album? i saw ot the other day and it was called 'the princess diaries' or something!"

The title track "My Princess Gone" is really good! I haven't heard the rest of it though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 8 September 2006 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

(non-sequitur)
here's another: miserable vs exuberant

(x-post)

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 8 September 2006 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

know which world I prefer to live in, but during serious times is it obscene to embrace/favour the champagne spirit? is it all Chubbs vs Moles, then? (sorry whole other thread)

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 8 September 2006 00:12 (nineteen years ago)

how about i wayne "lava ground" ??

señor citizen (eman), Friday, 8 September 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

I already don't like you, but I'd love to know what you're talking about.

;_;

broadly speaking, most of the riddims about are more or less wholly predictable chips off the tribal/militaristic/marching bandy block, with i dunno, portentous synth stabs, corleone-brand staccato filigree on top, and so on. step forward riddims sweat/foundation/inspector/driff/angrier management/octane/galore/dutty landlord/12 gauge/smash (which is quite cheerful, granted)/full draw/cashley/really it would have been 100x quicker to list the ones that arent patterned thus.

i'm sure we said all this in 2005 as well, but then there was an actual military riddim, the success of which ppl were entitled to try replicate. now it's just endemic.

96% of the rest are of course throwback riddims, which can have their merits but generally just add to the overall grimness - throwback giggy/bogle resurrection has probly been the only non warlike retro revival, and it was class! paul's (positively martianesque)rundown probably has the "referencing the future/not being the future" aspect down right, i'd say; when i invoke dubstep it's not to say things sound like digital mystics or whatever, (dem time deh riddim tho?) but that they currently fall into that frame of fandom. i do do that a lot.

the disappointing new kano/vybz/corleone thing gets a special mention: _____________________

anyway confounded, if u disagree, bring it.

rtccc (mwah), Friday, 8 September 2006 10:05 (nineteen years ago)

(oops, 90% of what I wrote there applies more to grime/dubstep and anti-popism threads)

"i'm sure we said all this in 2005 as well, but then there was an actual military riddim, the success of which ppl were entitled to try replicate. now it's just endemic."

I like most of the new breed of "militaristic" riddims (and yeah Dem Time Deh is almost dubstep-y or at least what I wish dubstep was like most of the time) more than the boring ass military snare riddims from last year, but I suspect I am the "wrong clientele" anyway ;). At the same time the most enjoyable riddims of this year have definitely been the ones that have avoided these tropes (the Dave Kelly and the Frenchie stuff comes immediately to mind.)
