So this has apparently leaked (2 CDs, the first the first four singles plus a bunch of unreleased tracks and the second the versions) and I really really like it. Not much of the Rhythm & Sound-ish Roger Robinson/Tikiman stuff that dominated Pressure) but not as noise-annoys-ish (Rootsman influence perhaps?) as I was anticipating. Great Cutty Ranks tune too!

so whats it sound like then? ward 21?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 10 February 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

Not really. The current track ("Yard Man" ft El Feco??) I am listening to has a lot of amens, hoover sounds and sirens, but there is a a lot of space in it too where everything else drops out and only the vocals play. I guess it sounds a lot like heavier tracks on Pressure but the percussion is more varied (less thud thud) and I'm like the vocals and the arrangements better.

This was supposed to come out a year ago or something wasn't it?

I'm desperate to hear this, going to have to have a look around to see if I can find it.

jacderida (jacderida), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 00:39 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah there were release dates on Rephlex for August 2004, I think. A little late, I guess.

The Bug doing his thing on BBC's breezeblock with like a zillion MCs.

I'm betting that my girlfriend will like "Boom Boom Claat" if I tell her it's a NIN remix.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

what's a hoover sound?

team jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

The "Mentasm"-riff that's on virtually every 'ardkore/darkcore/techstep track ever.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

but is it still relevant?

ham'ron (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

Well JaXoN is shocked that people still make (and listen to) DANCEHALL so it probably isn't relevant to him. ;)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

well i am the person that started this thread
Has the quality and/or quantity of good dancehall diminished this year or is it lack of interested posters?

and i don't remember a single dancehall thread since then (i'm sure there was but i prolly wasn't paying attention).

what tim says about overdosing is probably true. i think i'm ready to hear some new stuff. those tracks you sent out were all really good.

team jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

This may be the only new dancehall thread since then:

Rolling 2006 Dancehall Thread

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

that's the most hillarious thread. everyone's so confused and speculative (in a cute, charming way)

I found a good quality mp3 of the BBC set (haha unfortunately it begins and ends with Mary Anne Hobbs talking--"Kevin Martin you are a WARRIOR SOUL"?!?!?--but that's easily ignored or lopped off, I guess.) I'll YSI if there is any demand.

Oh yeah and the record is out official today, I think.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

ysi! ysi!

ham'ron (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

Haha okay I'll try to upload at lunch.

One thing the BBC session makes wonder is what happened to Stush!?!? She's (other than Roger Robinson/Spaceape if those guys even count) easily the best MC on this and I'm not sure I've heard anything other than "Dollar Sign".

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

i heard this in other music about a month ago and it sounded really, really good. (what i know about raggacore could barely fill a paragraph, though.)

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 06:08 (nineteen years ago)

Kevin Martin has a pretty good invisible jukebox in the Wire this month. Comes off pretty well and apparently more collabs with Mark Stewart are in the works(!)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

this is...really diffuse. these guys don't really sound all that good over dub/bashment tempo tracks do they?

ham'ron (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

it might be the radio fidelity though, coupled with my bass-less computer speakers.

ham'ron (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

i also have to admit the idea of a k-mart/dmz curated dancehall night at plastic people is pretty drool-worthy.

ham'ron (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think the tempo is necessarily the problem as much as perhaps some unfamiliarity with the tracks themselves on the part of the MCs. Apparently Martin usually uses much more stripped down tracks for them to vocalize over and then embellishes them after the vocal is in place. So it would not surprise me if there is an element of "wtf am I MCing over now" to the proceedings? The best bits are definitely the Roger Robinson/Spaceape things, because whether they stay on the beat or not is largely unrelated to what is playing behind them. But Flowdan (who I usually love) just sounds lost.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
Bought this thing yesterday. It fucking rules, esp. the versions disc. I have Pressure; now I need to buy the EP w/Warrior Queen and the "Gun Disease" single w/Cutty Ranks.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

pdf find the excellent Bug vs. Soundmurderer Peel Session from a couple of years ago. It's still floating around slsk and is well worth it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

I don't use slsk. If someone wants to YSI it, that's another matter...
