thoughts on Nelly Furtado/Timbaland collaboration "Promiscuous Girl"? You can get it here (for now, anyway), and I think it's amazing. It makes me excited for:
A) Nelly's new album (late March)
B) the state of the club banga in 2006
C) the future overuse of the phrase "you're game MVP like steve nash" (as rollie mentioned)

Is it just me?

davelus (davelus), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 04:33 (nineteen years ago)

well, it certainly aint me.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 04:36 (nineteen years ago)

We started discussing it and maneater here already but a new thread is fine I suppose.
I'm not sure what this has to do with the 'state of the club banger' considering i'm not aware of any clubs currently banging it but as far as the state of Timbaland it is good news for sure.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 04:42 (nineteen years ago)

both of these songs...bleh...tim's new drum sounds are ass.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 05:14 (nineteen years ago)

I am freaking out about "Promiscuous Girl" less than I was when I first heard it - I listened to that Timbo/Lil Kim song a few days ago and now "Promiscuous Girl" kinda sounds like a poor man's version of that. Still, unless I'm totally blanking on something it's got to be the best Timbaland track since that song (no I didn't like "The Potion"), and it's easily the most interesting thing I can imagine being on that normal-folks radio thing I never actually listen to, if only for those "background vocals" in the second verse (LOW).

Also, I predict that every DJ in Los Angeles will be forced to transition directly from it into "Hollaback Girl" out of sheer lack of creativity.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 05:15 (nineteen years ago)

i'm happy to open up my overenthusiasm to ILM too-cool-isms... yes, hollaback girl will either follow or lead into this song way more than it should. James + deej, I'm with you on this as far as Timbo goes
but while there are things to like about Maneater it doesnt thrill me as much - if only it were the Hall+Oates cover I had imagined...

davelus (davelus), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 05:38 (nineteen years ago)

I like both these new Furtado songs, though the harmonies on the chorus of "Maneater" bug me for some reason.

Englebert Humperdinck Fan Club President (R. J. Greene), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 05:39 (nineteen years ago)

if only it were the Hall+Oates cover I had imagined...

Truth! The only thing sadder will be when the Richard X/Annie "Two Of Hearts" turns out to not be a Stacy Q cover.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 05:43 (nineteen years ago)

I never liked "The Jump Off" very much. I prefer Timbaland when he sounds widescreen to his more hyper-compressed dirty tracky efforts. "Maneater" actually reminds me of a mixture of the stuff from the second Bubba Sparxxx album (stripped of country affectations) or perhaps "Hola Hovito". Also maybe Timbaland has been inspired by the homages to his "3D drums" attack on productions by Tim & Bob, plus whoever did "Get To Poppin".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 06:07 (nineteen years ago)

I suppose "Maneater" is the single, isn't it? I find myself liking "Promiscuous Girl" better.

This song was created because hollaback girl is still popular and radio stations need to meet their CANCON quotas.

got a feeling it's going to be a long year of me arguing how much better "Maneater" is than "Promiscuous Girl"

Le Baaderonixx de Benedict Canyon (baaderonixx), Friday, 31 March 2006 09:03 (nineteen years ago)

i still haven't heard 'promiscuous girl'! 'maneater', however, is just about the best pop single i've heard this year.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 31 March 2006 09:14 (nineteen years ago)

I was actually relieved to discover I thought Maneater was rubbish. It's really, really clumsy.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

b-b-but "she says she luv ya luv ya long time"!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:52 (nineteen years ago)

Sidenote: Between "Maneater" and "Black Sweat", is this the year of awesome open hat sounds?

Rodney's motives are beyond the comprehension of men (R. J. Greene), Friday, 31 March 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

Seriously! That open hat beat makes me do an involuntary (but enjoyable) head bob every time it comes around. I'm sure I look like a chicken here in my cubicle at work.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 31 March 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

well chris martin is on the closer! i suspect that was the putative duet and thank god it didn't work out like that - martin honking along would have ruined it. he just plays guitar i think.

OTM his voice would have made it impossible for me to like it.

Fucking hell - I'm playing catch-up here, but both 'Maneater' and 'Promiscuous Girl' are incredible... There's some kind of Timbaland alchemy going on here, because both are so much more than the sum of their parts. Having said that, there are about 5 moments in each song that raise the hairs on the nape of my neck. Fantastic production.

Also, that moment at the beginning of 'PG' - "Have I thrown you off?" "Nope" "Didn't think so" is SO sexy...she's actually quite hot, isn't she?

Say It Right owns on this album.

This album is still so good. Much more consistent than FS/LS (the first half of which is great but then meh...). "Say it right" and "do it" are brilliant 80s madonna tracks.

"Wait For You" owns this album but "Say It Right" is far and away the best of the singles.

i'm guessing 95.5 for Ethan would be whatever that station is in Atlanta. WPGC's a pretty good station, though.

First single from Mi Plan forthcoming Spanish album, to apparently be followed by one in Portuguese in 2010. I dig it, but then again, it draws a lot musically on Nelly 2.0, circa Folklore which I thought was really underrated, esp. the first half, which really soared at times. Spanish-language tracks rarely do well on the main charts, so I'm not sure what she's going for, but it's been too long since we've had something from eclectic, musically schizoid Nelly. My one hope - that in addition to mid-tempo rock and hippie banjo jams, she keeps following the reggaeton bent she dipped her foot in by collaborating w/ Calle 13 on the No Hay Igual remix.

Love for "Say It Right" thirded or whatever... To me, Loose was actually the best pop album of 2006. I don't think it has aged that well because Timbaland was over-used in that period and we all grew a bit tired of him... but I'd be really surprised if she comes up with something even half as good. "Manos al Aire" is already so-so but fortunately not as bad as it could have been.
