Pop songs today that sounds like in the eighties

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 19 February 2006 10:49 (twenty years ago)

Sex! Haven't had any dirt from Prince for ages, what with all that religious nonsense. Im looking forward to hearing that beat in better quality. Sounds nothing like the other things we've heard from the new album. Its the most obvious Prince sounding chorus we've heard from him in a long time.

Return to form? Mmm, maybe, it all sounds a bit Emancipation, apart from that beat, which is pretty exiting, although ive got this feeling the low quality of that video is making it sound better than it actually is.

TommyB, Sunday, 19 February 2006 14:12 (twenty years ago)

this is shit.
crap lyrics.
kinda funky music but corny as anything.
not a patch on the better R&B out these days, nor his own 80s classic funk workouts.
time for him to retire me thinks.

ohdear, Sunday, 19 February 2006 14:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm warming to it.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 19 February 2006 14:25 (twenty years ago)

It would be better if he got rid of that infuriating high-pitched synth thing.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Sunday, 19 February 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Prince is the shit.

Don Rowlando (Sam Rowlands), Sunday, 19 February 2006 15:36 (twenty years ago)

It sounds A LOT like Emancipation; the wheedly part of the hook is lifted straight from Pussy Control and the whole track really reminds me of emale or human body as regards its general energy.

One thing I haven't seen anybody mention is how this track represents a return to Mr. Nelson's penchant for tremendous sexual energy and bubbles with double entendre without ever becoming specifically sexual or risque. Part of what's made post-Jehovah's Witness Prince so goddamn boring has been the neutering of his over the top freaky fuckfest songwriting and the promotion of his generally more mediocre spiritual balladry. I'm glad he seems to have finally figured out a loophole that allows him to be nasty.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 19 February 2006 17:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm also fairly convinced that part of what makes the vid such "low quality" is that Prince can't touch the girl! It's tough work desexing the Dauphin.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 19 February 2006 17:33 (twenty years ago)

this is clearly made to sit side-by-side with Lil Jon in the clubz

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 19 February 2006 17:41 (twenty years ago)

that open hi-hat sound is amazing. even if the song had nothing else going for it (which it does), I'd listen to it for 4 minutes just for the hi-hat.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Sunday, 19 February 2006 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Part of what's made post-Jehovah's Witness Prince so goddamn boring has been the neutering of his over the top freaky fuckfest songwriting and the promotion of his generally more mediocre spiritual balladry.

The funny thing about Prince is he was never really a Jehovah's Witness. He obviously thought he knew better than them, so I'm not really sure what he got out of his studies with them. Jehovah's Witnesses don't believe in Akashic Records featured on "The Rainbow Children" or anything remotely like the the mystery ramblings featured in the song "Seven." Also, his self-censorship was a bust, as he still made reference to sex out of wedlock and only censored his cursing occasionally. Basically, the whole experience was a pointless waste of time and frankly I'm not sure if The Rainbow Children is ruined more by the fact that there are JW references sprinkled throughout or by the fact that he's got it all wrong. Another weird thing to think about is the fact that Prince might have ALWAYS been familiar with Jehovah's Witness teachings, much like Michael Jackson. Perhaps he was raised that way? If you go back to his earliest hits, you will find references to Armageddon, the after world, looking forward to death, knocking on doors, etc. More Jehovah's Witnessy than your average christianity, anyway, despite being warped in a Prince-specific way as usual.

G. Hova-Switnis, Sunday, 19 February 2006 19:03 (twenty years ago)

I hear you, but his more militant and over the top self-policing seems to have followed a greater embrace of the JW values and, maybe not coincidentally, the death of his child following Emancipation.

I'm inclined to think he's always just been a bit undercooked, so yeah; I agree.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 19 February 2006 19:06 (twenty years ago)

It's fucking great.

Under the paving stones, Paul Scholes (nordicskilla), Sunday, 19 February 2006 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Re the video, some of his mugging appears directly influenced by J Timberlake's on "Like I Love You."

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Sunday, 19 February 2006 19:39 (twenty years ago)

it's ok. nice beat, lacks for a hook. the video's better than the song.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 19 February 2006 19:54 (twenty years ago)

I still haven't watched the video.

Under the paving stones, Paul Scholes (nordicskilla), Sunday, 19 February 2006 19:55 (twenty years ago)

you know, it's like that snl performance the other week -- the guy hasn't lost a step as far as his chops go, and he's still fun to watch. but there was a time when he wrote songs with the same kind of effortless smirk he does everything else, and for whatever reason that time has passed.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 19 February 2006 20:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure if The Rainbow Children is ruined more by the fact that there are JW references sprinkled throughout or by the fact that he's got it all wrong

The latter. I doubt he got God's blessing to hire Najee.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 19 February 2006 20:10 (twenty years ago)

rainbo children is actually about jon williams!!! the universe all makes sense now.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 19 February 2006 20:18 (twenty years ago)

gypsy OTFM. "Black Sweat" wants to be great, we all want it to be great, but it's just not.

don weiner (don weiner), Sunday, 19 February 2006 20:38 (twenty years ago)

I think it's pretty great. I don't mind being lonely in that view.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Sunday, 19 February 2006 21:22 (twenty years ago)

yeah this is great - U people R crazy! (haha)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Sunday, 19 February 2006 21:47 (twenty years ago)

SF people be lovin' this!

(what does it mean?)

Under the paving stones, Paul Scholes (nordicskilla), Sunday, 19 February 2006 22:13 (twenty years ago)

i haven't watched the video, but i've been playing the song non-stop the last few days. in fact this and the streets single are the only tracks in my 2006 pop playlist on my ipod.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 20 February 2006 01:50 (twenty years ago)

I think it's great by current pop standards; not necessarily when measured against Prince's back catalog. But then...

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 20 February 2006 03:46 (twenty years ago)

I love the song but watching the video I was expecting a Ying Yang Twin to pop up out of nowhere.

louise amara, Monday, 20 February 2006 11:30 (twenty years ago)

lets just hope its not like musicology .. a couple of great tracks and a lot of filler.
this track is wonderful and everything i ever loved about the man

mark e (mark e), Monday, 20 February 2006 11:34 (twenty years ago)

if i play this after "chaos and disorder "it's good but when i play it after "purple rain "it's rubbish .

retrogurl, Monday, 20 February 2006 11:41 (twenty years ago)

if you play it between Cameo and Sa-Ra Creative Partners it becomes non-existent!

i like it tho

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 20 February 2006 11:42 (twenty years ago)

lovin it!

chaki (chaki), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

I love the shit out of this song.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:30 (twenty years ago)

I love that he's made his first contemporary-sounding single in ages (i.e. I can actually picture it getting on the radio) by basically going back to his 80's sound.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 20 February 2006 21:31 (twenty years ago)

This got 'em off their asses on Saturday night.

Hal! Jordan! HAL! JORDAN! (Barima), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:18 (twenty years ago)

This is so tight

Baaderonixx, born again in Xixax (baaderonixx), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:33 (twenty years ago)

Am I the only one that notices he says "What's really good?"

Prince = Dip Set fanboy?

Englebert Humperdinck Fan Club President (R. J. Greene), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 04:32 (twenty years ago)

He may be "returning to form" sort of. But the best post 1990 Prince album was still called "The Love Below".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 2 March 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

I like this song. And the video is nice and stylish, especially the female DJ bit.

Turangalila (Salvador), Saturday, 4 March 2006 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

Geir, sometimes I just want to shake you.

Dan (Like A Polaroid Picture) Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 4 March 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

Sometimes I think Geir is a genius.

paulhw (paulhw), Sunday, 5 March 2006 00:18 (nineteen years ago)

I played this song last weekend in between "I.O.U." by Freeez and "No Favors" by Temper ,and everyone loved the prince song. I do think it's a return to form for him. I wonder if any remixes might happen?

Jacobs (LolVStein), Sunday, 5 March 2006 00:28 (nineteen years ago)

Dan, haven't you seen the bumper stickers?

NEVER SHAKE YOUR BABY

Lukas (lukas), Sunday, 5 March 2006 00:48 (nineteen years ago)

I was fucking ecstatic when I first heard it.

the line that says something like "i'm gonna make you scream like a white girl." is fucking hot and creepy and WTF all at the same time.

no its not his best, but considering that its 2006 and Prince is still making music and this is what it sounds like, i'd say its pretty fucking radical.

what's the deal with the b-side though... someone named "Tamar"? is this a new Prince protege?

in chicago we have a club that does an all-prince night the last Sunday of every month- I can't wait to go this month and see a room full of prince heads lose it to this.

grady (grady), Sunday, 5 March 2006 01:12 (nineteen years ago)

I was real excited when I first listened to it, but... this song cleared a dancefloor here faster than a stinkbomb when I dropped it at an open bar party at 1am

adam subdivide, Sunday, 5 March 2006 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

That's too bad. I still love it.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 5 March 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

three songs into 3121 and it's pretty fucking awesome.

team jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

When's it out?

I hope Black Sweat isn't the best track on there (i.e., I love it but I hope there are some surprises).

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

!!!!!

I MUST HEAR IT NOW.

It's out???

Adamrl (nordicskilla), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

Not until March 21st!

Adamrl (nordicskilla), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

not quite done w/it yet, but so far there are two corny ballad mis-steps. Black Sweat might be the best thing on it, but not by far. there are some other amazing tracks. all very synthy.

team jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

WHERE did you get it?

I like Prince ballads, even the bad ones.

Adamrl (nordicskilla), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

get on IM, i'll shoot it to you.

team jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

:( I...can't!

Adamrl (nordicskilla), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

i can!!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

haha

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

haha

(no)

Adamrl (nordicskilla), Monday, 6 March 2006 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

is jaxon...orson?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

do we have to go to his place? as usual?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Orson was posting from Communist Russia.

Adamrl (nordicskilla), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

i think this is a great album. definitely one of the best of the year so far.

Harpal (harpal), Monday, 6 March 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

this black sweat song is pretty good!
