i know fuck all about current electronic music, but this mix i'm listening to by Various Productions is really kicking my ass. the guy at wordthecat says they're dubstep/grime beats. i don't really know much dubstep but it's way slower than any grime i've heard. i'm hearing more of a crunchy, heavy rhythmic (timbaland influenced) downtempo type beat with weird folky female vocals and vocal samples on top. really beautiful & creepy stuff. if listened to the wrong way, one could hear traces of IDM or portishead, but it's way better than any of that.

here's their site: http://various.co.uk/ besides having amazing music, the illustrations on the site are top notch.

you can download the mix here

have they already been talked to death on ILM?

i was pretty excited by the idea of them (and i looooooove the packaging) but the actual records kinda leave me a little cold. (like dubstep, blah blah.)

they've got that indie "filter"

all i've really heard is the mix and two singles tho, so maybe i'm not hearing their best work.

I've heard the mix and I quite like it. I suspect that dubstep has been growing me lately on me though.

i actually listened to it again this am and it sounded much better than my first impression. i want a CD because there's no way i'm springing for a bunch of 7"s.

seven months pass...
yeah, i really like hater and sir on the world is gone- they don't sound overly dubsteppy to me -very echoey, lots of effects with nice vocals on top.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 2 October 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

three years pass...

having found this album in the clearout bins recently, i have spent more time with this in recent weeks that just about anything else.
hater is drop dead brilliance.
time for followup surely ?
[note : i am not including last years collab with poet - is that wrong of me ? ]

No, that collab was terrible. The first thing I didn't buy from them. There are a bunch of great tracks that didn't make it on the album though, and you definitely need to track down the soundboard live recordings from their mini tour a couple years ago.

Didn't they do a remix record too?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 January 2010 22:43 (sixteen years ago)

yes they did, it had a handful of unreleased tracks on it too.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 14 January 2010 23:03 (sixteen years ago)

The remix record is definitely worth seeking out, I like the version of Hater on it even more
