Area Indie Rock Band Fellated: PFM loves Tapes 'n Tapes

From Sam Ubl's PFM review (8.3): "Here's a charismatic, playfully slipshod band unconcerned with making all the loose ends meet up, audacious enough to leave the dot-connecting to us. But then, never quite knowing which Feelies riff or Malkmus vocal turn or, hell, CYHSY organ sound these guys will strike with next is precisely what makes The Loon such a rich, participatory, and eminently repeatable experience."

This paragraph (and the whole review) just makes me gag...

Tapes n' Tapes are good, though.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

They were trying to sell this disc through the "indie store only" distro we are a part of and then asked again for orders based on this review complaining that not many people seemed interested. They then compared the "story" to that of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

I'm not stocking it unless I get a good reason that some kid in Columbus wants it.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:57 (nineteen years ago)

my band is playing w/them on thursday nite. i expect protestors and anti-pitchfork picketing at the front door!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

this is fun though! i can't wait for mpls indie rock scene minutia to be all over ILM!

so, you guys hear adam patters0n is back drumming for the vets? yeah, he made his debut at the malachi constant cd release party....also, falcon crest, stnnng and shim sham shufflers are going to be playing a gig at the memory lanes bowling alley...should be fun.

CYHSY organ sound

Does such a thing exist?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:06 (nineteen years ago)

WOXY doesn't drive sales here. CD101, our terrestrial alt-rock station, does.

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:07 (nineteen years ago)

did they steal it from talking heads ?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:07 (nineteen years ago)

CYHSY organ sound
Does such a thing exist?

i keep thinking that acronym is for Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young everytime I see it.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.cd101.com/sections/onair/playlist/playlist.asp?cid=1

looks like spin and filter magazines on the radio

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:10 (nineteen years ago)

Q: what was the station that replaced WOXY 97X on the FM dial ?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:11 (nineteen years ago)

doesn't all this blog-backlash begin now as soon as Brooklyn Vegan, You Ain't No Picasso, and My Old Kentucky Blog mention a band?

pinder (pinder), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:12 (nineteen years ago)

These guys are a FUCKLOAD more interesting than CYHSY. A FUCKLOAD!

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:14 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, is that a compliment?

Ernesto Wolfgangbang, Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:17 (nineteen years ago)

Breathing is more interesting than Clap etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

the clap?

gear (gear), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:30 (nineteen years ago)

The acronym is ass and I refuse to type out the full name. Can I just call them 'those obnoxious fucks' instead?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:33 (nineteen years ago)

It seems to me that Pitchfork enjoys "canonizing" these obscure indie bands that give you instant deja-vu, gauzy familiarity.

Like you've heard it ALL before, but there's infinitesimal details or hipster quirks that give it the "now" feel. Whereas I subscribe to the notion that so much of "now" indie-rock is variations on themes, and I'd much rather listen to the original theme. Stereotyping, here.

That said, there is something rather interesting about this band's Fall/Pavement/Pixies vibe. The drummer does interesting things. Bah.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:34 (nineteen years ago)

The lyrics quoted in that review do not inspire confidence.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:42 (nineteen years ago)

Album is seriously toploaded. I withdraw votes of confidence. Starts off pretty interesting though. Nice drums.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:45 (nineteen years ago)

Still beats the pants off of CYHSY and Wilderness though.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:53 (nineteen years ago)

M@tt He1geson: falcon crest, stnnng and shim sham shufflers are going to be playing a gig at the memory lanes bowling alley...should be fun.

Is that at Punk Rock Bowling? We went yesterday, and were sort of confused to find a blues combo....

subgenius (subgenius), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 02:10 (nineteen years ago)

"there is something rather interesting about this band's Fall/Pavement/Pixies vibe"

interesting as in they have roughly three original songs and the rest are pavement-clone-to-the-max

or at least that's the impression I got from their live show

he was even doing Malkmus' vocal tics

Renard (Renard), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 03:02 (nineteen years ago)

so i guess pitchfork cant give a good review for a new band or otherwise people think they are trying to hype them.
nothing is innocent?

fert, Wednesday, 1 March 2006 03:13 (nineteen years ago)

as the thread now enters its backlash to the backlash phase

Renard (Renard), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 03:17 (nineteen years ago)

Is everybody who writes for Pitchfork this stupid????
Pitchfork Observed
Pitchfork: Classic or Dud?
junkmedia.org (or stylusmagazine.com) vs. pitchforkmedia.com is there a winner?
Pitchfork Strikes Again
pitchfork is dumb (#34985859340293849494 in a series.)
Who cares about Pitchfork...(not me)

Interesting fact: if you complain about pitchfork and end up writing about music, one day you will write for pitchfork. There was this hex put on them, you see...
