sounds like On The Corner?

is there anything else out there in the jazz, rock, avant circles that sounds remotely like this? the heavy looping, funky, layered, post-processed sound?

the only things i've encountered thus far are Ornette's "Dancing In Your Head", This Heat, especially "24 Track Loop" and maybe a bit of Larry Young's "Lawrence Of Newark" (i've read this comparison more than heard it, i need to give that album more time).

so anything else?

I'm with sensei's suggestion of Can, while expanding it to include "Halleluhwah" from TAGO MAGO.

From the jazz idiom, check Joe Henderson's BLACK IS THE COLOR, Herbie Hancock's SEXTANT, or Weather Report's SWEETNIGHTER.

Vahid, you sure about that Corea drop? It ain't exactly drippin' with the funk, and I don't recall any overdubs. Maybe I need to give it another listen...

On a more recent tip, Wibutee's PLAYMACHINE gets the nod from here.

It seems like a lot of these suggestions has stuff in common with electric Miles, but not the repetition of OtC.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 2 March 2006 03:26 (nineteen years ago)

if you haven't checked out the Panthalassa record that came out in 1998, its worth a listen. its basically Bill Laswell playing with the tapes from the On the Corner, Get Up With It, and In a Silent Way sessions to create a new 60-minute monster. Its both re-master and remix while being neither. its my understanding that the second "movement" of this album contains previously unreleased sounds from the OTC sessions.

(there was also an album that came out around the same time with very similar cover art called "Panthalassa: The Remixes". this is easier to come by and not what i'm talking about.)

but the question posed at the top of this thread is one ive found myself asking a lot over the last few years. i think that the answer is "not much." and that's why its such a special album. one of mytop 10 favorite pieces of cover art ever, too.

grady (grady), Thursday, 2 March 2006 05:10 (nineteen years ago)

i'm sorta pulling this outta my ass, but there seems to be a really strong connection with the band Supersilent. really heavily post-processed weirdo jazz. they never really get into the funk, and there's a feeling of total lack of structure but something is there.

team jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 2 March 2006 05:49 (nineteen years ago)

"Our Point of Departure" by HiM sounds exactly like it. Almost in a too close sorta way.

I like the album though. If anything, it's a bit more organized than the genuine article.

cheshycat (chëshy f cat), Thursday, 2 March 2006 06:13 (nineteen years ago)

that Wibutee record is very, very influenced by On The Corner. it's pretty nice, if a bit almost post-rocky, but that's prolly just from the modern production. you can listen to it at their site http://www.wibutee.net/oldindex.html

i never did end up checking out stuff on the jazzland label even though i've been hip to them for a long time.

xpost - is that the HiM band that's associated with the whole chicago post-rock scene? if so, i have a REALLY nice experimental dub 12" by them

team jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 2 March 2006 07:16 (nineteen years ago)

HiM is Doug Sharin's band after June of 44. So I think he's a Louisville dude?

But yeah, same group you're thinking of.

cheshycat (chëshy f cat), Thursday, 2 March 2006 07:32 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i was thinking he's part of Directions in Music w/bundy k brown

team jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 2 March 2006 07:37 (nineteen years ago)

It's live, so there's no processing, and it's a cheat to propose another Miles, but his *In Concert* album from around the same period is great and underrated.

Chuck B, Thursday, 2 March 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

IIRC some pieces from On The Corner are played on Dark Magus, which makes for a fine companion piece.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 2 March 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

The Chitinous Ensemble: Chitinous (1970 Decca)

Paul Buckmaster avant-jazz project from around the time he was influencing Miles. (He was specifically very influential for the On the Corner sessions).

Recently remastered and released on the Vocalion label.

hmmph, Thursday, 2 March 2006 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

wow. that one sounds rad. i can't belive how much it sounds like OTC. besides the studio fuckery, at least

team jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 2 March 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

No studio fuckery - but as it clearly states of Miles on the sleevenotes to the recent OTC re-issue that Buckmaster had 'affected his thought processes".
Chitinous sounds like a mixture of In A Silent Way & On the Corner with bizarre scary Ligeti style strings over the top. The tracks with tabla have the most obvious OTC feel to them and the concepts of 'spacing' and 'vamps' are all present.
As it came out before the OTC sessions were recorded it makes for an interesting listen. The Deram uk original is extremely rare so its great that Vocalion included it as part of their re-issue series last year. (Interestingly Gus Dudgeon is credited as Consultant Producer - he and Buckmaster both worked on the early Elton John albums).

hmmph, Thursday, 2 March 2006 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

maybe a bit of Larry Young's "Lawrence Of Newark"

Don't really see that myself. Considering Miles thought he was doing a Sly Stone kinda thing, maybe some Sly (esp. "Riot" or "Fresh")

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 3 March 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

Some of the tracks on the Contortions/James Chance/James White & the Blacks Off White; also the Robert Quine/Jody Harris album Escape. These didn't use loops and aren't as layered (if I recall correctly; can't find my copy of the Quine-Harris alb), but definitely went for the On the Corner guitar sound.

(Btw, I just got a copy of Simon Reynolds' Rip It Up and Start Again, and he makes some mistakes in his treatment of the Contortions, probably misinterpreting something that James Chance told him. Implies that Chance was working exclusively with people who'd been nonmusicians when they joined the band, which most certainly was not true of Harris, Scott, and Christensen.)

Nice!

I remember seeing the listing for a Weird Forest 2LP reissue of this (still in stock at Forced Exposure--just checked), but never ended up giving it a listen. Wish I had--this sounds great.

The first Ice record has some tracks that kind of remind me of OTC. Not in production technique, just rhythmically.

Miles T is excellent!

Picked up Sweetnighter yesterday, mostly due to this thread. The other Weather Report stuff I've heard doesn't do much for me, but Sweetnighter is great. I actually like the unedited/un-fucked-with versions of the OTC tracks from the Complete OTC box better than OTC itself, and Sweetnighter is VERY much in line with those.
