Bulb Records is dead

Their website's been down for a while, but I ran into Pete Larson and he's gone back to school for a math degree (I believe a masters). He's also grown a crazy-wicked beard that must frighten children in Adrian. He's continuing to fulfill back orders out of his stock, but isn't planning on pressing or signing any more, mostly because he's lost a lot of distribution in the last year or two and can't seem to make it on his own anymore.
No doubt some people will see this as justice for having introduced Wolf Eyes and Andrew WK to the world, but it's sad to see the former home of Quintron and Mind Flayer (and Voodoo Boots and The King Brothers and a million others) go softly into that great goodnight.

RIP bulb; long live bulb backstock sales! Pete was a great dude. Nutcase, but great.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

He and Sc0tt D3rr of Blackjack Records did a great series of splits about 10+ years ago under the name: BulbJack.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

Heh. But I have to post a new thread every time I see Pete!
xpost: what's on those splits?

Heh. I really like both Wolf Eyes and Andrew WK. But I know a lot of folks around here hate 'em hate 'em hate 'em.

I love the Bulb attitude and esthetic. It had a huge impact in Chicago in the mid-late 90s.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

I interviewed Pete a couple of years ago and he denied that they had an attitude or an esthetic, though that was derailed by a ten-minute rant about why they weren't a "noise label." He also said that Bulb had never put out a single noise album and never would. Obviously, there's some subjectivity regarding what makes a noise album.

js (honestengine), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

Forcefield's "Lord of the Ring Modulators" is definitely a noise album.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

OK, I just know that if a band was on Bulb it was kind of thrilling and I knew that I would get something unexpected, rough, possibly very nasty, but certainly something un-"tasteful," so maybe the esthetic was purely the bands', and the label just had a talent for hanging out with interesting and unpredictable musicians, that's always a possibility.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

Tracer— I always thought there was a general thread that ran through everything, but I think Pete may never have been conscious of it. He did say that he always wanted to put out albums by people who seemed like they couldn't possibly be making anything other than what they were right then, like the idea that Quintron albums were always going to sound like they could only be made by Quintron and that Quintron couldn't do anything else but make Quintron albums.

Not a chance, Adrian is one of the finest burnout capitals of the world. How do I think I learned how to drink so much? I've still never run into Pete L on the wild streets of Adrian when I go back for t-day or x-mas. I'm usually at The Pub though ... maybe he's more of a Club 109 type of guy...
