named after a dylan bootleg, shameless steals all over the place (notably powderfinger), cheesy sparkles and bad-jovi balladry, why do I like this record so much? anyone else smitten?

winter testing (winter testing), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 21:54 (twenty years ago)

All that, and they named one of the songs after Peter Frampton's follow-up to the -Frampton Comes Alive- LP. Awesome.

best.linernotes.ever.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 22:07 (twenty years ago)

Bizarrely, I've been listening to this record loads recently. 'Tis k-awesome. (Although I'm worried that when listening to I'm In You I do sometimes ponder digging out a Peter Frampton record from a charity shop bargain bin... somebody stop me.)

emil.y (emil.y), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 23:42 (twenty years ago)

I used to like it a lot but I don't think it holds up very well. 4 out of 10 overall.

everything, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 23:52 (twenty years ago)

I've never thought about them in the context of Powderfinger, but I do like 'em. A good, well executed concept.

i think rating a pooh sticks record misses the point

keyth (keyth), Thursday, 9 March 2006 01:49 (twenty years ago)

weren't the covers of this and the singles taken off it all drawn by some ex-scooby doo artist?

i prefer the older, funnier songs.

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 9 March 2006 09:54 (twenty years ago)

Okay, now I'm going to have to dig this out and listen to it for the first time in ten long years or more.

Merryweather (scarlet), Thursday, 9 March 2006 10:57 (twenty years ago)

Great STEAMING BROWN WONDER...:)

Russell Dixon (Skinny), Thursday, 9 March 2006 11:19 (twenty years ago)

Is it true that Amelia Flecther was Trudi Tambourine?

flowersdie (flowersdie), Thursday, 9 March 2006 11:19 (twenty years ago)

Amelia Fletcher sang backing vocals on this album. Trudi Tambourine doesn't exist.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

really? who was that on the cover of formula one generation then? & who sang the vocal parts that everyone imagined were trudi tambourine?

cw (cww), Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:53 (twenty years ago)

I believe that was someone called Stephanie. It's entirely possible she doesn't exist either, though.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 9 March 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

A quick look at AMG and it says Stephanie played drums, which means she probably didn't exist either since they had a drum machine. It says Alison on bass so the girl on F1 Generation is probably her. Or someone else.

Utterly fictional and fantastic. Great then, now and forever.

My question re: this album. Trouser Press' writeup states:

(Collectors' alert: the Zoo reissue omits some of the more potentially actionable bits of familiar '70s rock originally incorporated on the album.)

Is this true??

Relatedly, there is a hyper-detailed discography here:

http://idiot-dog.com/music/pooh.sticks/

It reveals the existence of this interesting compilation:

The Pooh Sticks' Little White Wonder

don't think so as I've had two copies of this - the original on Cheree when it came out and a Zoo import after the original was nicked at a party. they sound the same unless my ears and/or memory deceive

...sometimes her arms bend back

Major Bloodnok, Thursday, 9 March 2006 20:46 (twenty years ago)

I saw them live twice and can report that they were a real band by this point, had Hue and Amelia on vocals and three other guys on guitars and drums playing quite expertly with not a drum machine in sight.

everything, Thursday, 9 March 2006 21:18 (twenty years ago)

That Little White Wonder promo box...I have that. Don't know about giving it away - they were selling them at the gig where I picked it up (overpriced too). Just a tape with recordings of thrift store copies of those old singles. Supposedly one copy had a message from the band on the B-side & if you got that copy you got to join them in the studio & add hand-claps or lalalalalalala's to a future recording.

One of the more pointless items in the Sticks discography. The guy on the merch stand spent most of the evening telling clueless purchasers over & over again that it did not contain any music by the Pooh Sticks.

Wandering Boy Poet, Friday, 10 March 2006 13:45 (twenty years ago)

I have probably the most pointless item in the Pooh Sticks discography - the Encores box set - which apart from cool inserts as usual contains a one-sided 7" with some crowd noise and a snippet of "Going Steady" by Jilted John sped up on it, and nothing else. The box is handy for keeping flexis in though, so it serves a purpose in my record collection!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 10 March 2006 14:41 (twenty years ago)

In case anyone's interested, the crowd noise appears to be from the same London show as the bonus tracks on the Trademark of Quality CD. An incredibly interesting fact I know you all wanted to know.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 10 March 2006 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Funny, the early singles/box sets go for a fortune.
The later stuff you can't give away.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 10 March 2006 14:47 (twenty years ago)

Yep have the Encores thing too...I notice both these things are on eBay at the moment & none too specific about what's actually on the 7" & tape, but list all the box contents

Wandering Boy Poet, Friday, 10 March 2006 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Play "The world is turning on" at any time before or after "Bordeaux Rose" Fairfield Parlour.
