Russell Dixon (Skinny), Friday, 10 March 2006 10:07 (twenty years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 10 March 2006 10:11 (twenty years ago)

cover of "Shipbuilding"

MitchellStirling (MitchellStirling), Friday, 10 March 2006 11:46 (twenty years ago)

"Beautiful Ones", obviously.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 10 March 2006 11:47 (twenty years ago)

I'd actually take "Beautiful Ones" over anything Pulp recorded, to be honest.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 10 March 2006 11:47 (twenty years ago)

The Killing of a Flash Boy

Fish is Biodegradable! (That Means It Rots) (kate), Friday, 10 March 2006 11:53 (twenty years ago)

Did they do "Brahs in pohket"?

Aye, it's on Ruby Trax.

My own vote goes to "Still Life".

Lotta Continua (Damian), Friday, 10 March 2006 11:58 (twenty years ago)

"trash" or "saturday night"

christoff (christoff), Friday, 10 March 2006 14:31 (twenty years ago)

"Beautiful Ones", obviously.

"Pantomime Horse"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:08 (twenty years ago)

"The Living Dead" is a beaut but it's just pipped by "My Dark Star" for me. Lucky enough to see it live back in 1995.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:08 (twenty years ago)

"Beautiful Ones" and "Saturday Night" are also really great. But I still choose "Pantomime Horse" as their pinnacle.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Metal Mickey

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

'animal nitrate' is the ONLY remotely passable song they ever did, in a 7/10 meh kind of way.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:25 (twenty years ago)

'popist straw man star'

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:29 (twenty years ago)

the suede singer's voice was pretty bad.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:30 (twenty years ago)

I never really got Suede to the same extent that everyone else seems to... still, probably "Animal Nitrate", or maybe "Can't Get Enough" just to be controversial.

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:42 (twenty years ago)

'animal nitrate' is the ONLY remotely passable song they ever did, in a 7/10 meh kind of way.

But Lex, they were pop and they fetishized loved nightlife sleazeboys like you. (That is you, yes?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:44 (twenty years ago)

they covered "Shipbuilding"? God, I'm out of the loop.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

And have been since age 12, apparently.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

Youngster.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

i don't think so ned; it's more that suede romanticized british white working class club culture (on 'coming up') in the same way lex does current east london 'urban' culture.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:51 (twenty years ago)

they covered "Shipbuilding"? God, I'm out of the loop.

MitchellStirling (MitchellStirling), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

A photo finish: "The Wild Ones," "My Dark Star," or "Lazy."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:59 (twenty years ago)

But Lex, they were pop and they fetishized loved nightlife sleazeboys like you. (That is you, yes?)

yes and that is the PET SHOP BOYS! for suede, replace 'pop' with 'indie'.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 10 March 2006 16:00 (twenty years ago)

pet shop boys are so indie! look at their fanbase for proof.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 10 March 2006 16:01 (twenty years ago)

psb can't be indie, they didn't have guitars!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 10 March 2006 16:05 (twenty years ago)

They do now.

Suede - POX

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 11 March 2006 14:05 (twenty years ago)

"The Chemistry Between Us" is my personal choice, but I can think of at least 5 others that could contest as well.

Chantilly Bass (ChantillyBass), Saturday, 11 March 2006 23:07 (twenty years ago)

Right now it's "Modern Boys"

BeeOK (boo radley), Sunday, 12 March 2006 08:48 (twenty years ago)

Dom was OTM way upthread, "The Beautiful Ones" has their catchiest hook ever coupled with some non-annoying Brettisms and a great chorus. "Modern Boys" is pretty much tied - it just depends on whether you prefer snide or sad. After that I'll take "Sound of the Streets."

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Sunday, 12 March 2006 14:32 (twenty years ago)

"Heroine"

Mofrackie, Monday, 13 March 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Sleeping Pills is the great Suede song, it has guitar to die for and a lovely swooning vocal. also very fine are the Wild Ones and By the Sea, proving that they could overcome their 'trying too hard to be bowie' hangups and really shine.

dr x o'skeleton, Monday, 13 March 2006 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Is it just me or has The Drowners not aged gracefully at all?

The best things they ever recorded were the Stay Together EP and Dog Man Star which, flat production aside, was a masterwork of over-the-top songwriting.

There's a very special place in my shrivelled little heart for The Wild Ones. I was absolutely gutted when it didn't make the Top Ten.

klee (klee), Monday, 13 March 2006 16:36 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

I just heard "The Drowners" for the first time a few minutes ago. It seems a rather unremarkable song; I'm surprised it generated much attention. Was this really revolutionary at the time of its release?

Richard Wood Johnson, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 02:12 (eighteen years ago)

The junk guitars, "we kissed in his room/to a popular tune," the giant SWOON of a chorus ("Slo-o-o-w d-o-o-o-wnnnn") - yum.

hat trick of trashiness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 26 October 2023 01:32 (two years ago)

I only heard (some of) the B-sides quite a while after the albums, and maybe I was no longer in a Suede mood, but though some of the songs were good enough to make it to the albums, I don't know that any would make my top 10 songs (or maybe even top 20)?

I'd pick "She's Not Dead" or "Picnic by the Motorway".

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 27 October 2023 16:25 (two years ago)

every song on the first album is the best suede song. but also...stay together. that's the one. the magnum opus.

The 2 of Us, then the Sci-Fi Lullabies version of Europe Is Our Playground

'Animal Nitrate' from the first album. I was 19 when it was released and as a teenager living in a satellite town of London it was a case of right band right place right time. Maybe even more so than Nirvana had been two years previously. Alternatively, 'We Are The Pigs' from the second album. But there are so many great tracks on both albums that really it's impossible to choose.

you gotta roll with the pączki to get to what's real (snoball), Friday, 27 October 2023 17:33 (two years ago)

Like I'm immediately sitting here thinking about changing both answers.

I have signed up to do the Suede poll but now they are releasing new music and not up to date. If someone wants to take over that would be great. I would love to do a deep dive.

I think their B-Sides are Top 5 best from the 90s along with the Cure, MBV and the Boo Radleys...

Bee OK, Friday, 27 October 2023 17:48 (two years ago)

some very interesting choices!!!!

Animal Nitrate was the first time I heard them. Hard to choose anything else.

Probably The Living Dead. Led me to falsely believe that b-sides might always be that good

PaulTMA, Saturday, 28 October 2023 20:40 (two years ago)

The Wild Ones

corrs unplugged, Saturday, 28 October 2023 21:03 (two years ago)

great choice, “as I open the blinds to my mind” gives me chills everytime

brimstead, Sunday, 29 October 2023 00:11 (two years ago)

Not that I’m going to take over the poll from Bee but per that point new music sure as hell keeps being made by them and “She Still Leads Me On” not only ate part of my brain last year, it was the lead off number to their absolutely killer show here and I still hum it randomly just because.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 29 October 2023 15:03 (two years ago)

"Killing of a Flash Boy" for me.

blatherskite, Tuesday, 7 November 2023 17:53 (two years ago)

One from the run that is Pantomime Horse - The Drowners - Sleeping Pills - Breakdown. Which one? I couldn't possibly say, it could be any of them

imago, Tuesday, 7 November 2023 20:00 (two years ago)

There really are so few bands where there are not only b-sides in the running for "greatest song" but too many to easily pick. Even the Pet Shop Boys, with their own nearly unparalleled run of b-sides, as many of those that I love I'm not sure how many leap to the level of the group's astounding singles.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 7 November 2023 20:21 (two years ago)

yeah it’s crazy. they played “flashboy” when I saw them live and my lord it was good
