I'm listening to this one again after several years, this one was always one of my favourite. 1991. It was called "Shift-work"

Hahaha! And you would likely be right, but let's continue this thread.

The Peel box set has just enough of every era to qualify as a canonical volume for me.

It's a tie for me between Hex and slates, with Grotesque not far behind. Perhaps this thread should be retitled: What album did the fall have out when you first became aware of them arond the age of 16?

dr x o'skeleton, Monday, 13 March 2006 09:54 (twenty years ago)

Dragnet.

Fave Fall albun. Hex enduction hour.

First one bought (when I got into them at the age of 15) bend sinister. Closely followed by every other album within about 3 months.

Fave recent release. The peel sessions box set has barely been off my cd player for more than a day since I bought it on the day of release.

Ant, Monday, 13 March 2006 13:56 (twenty years ago)

'Shift-Work' was the first Fall album I ever heard. Bought it the same day as 'Slanted and enchanted' and wondered how on earth people were saying that both band sounded alike. Still sounds great but I'm going to go with 'Saving grace' as my favourite.

Michael B, Monday, 13 March 2006 14:35 (twenty years ago)

top three:
hex enduction
bend sinister
slates

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Monday, 13 March 2006 18:16 (twenty years ago)

'room to live' followed by 'bend sinister'

im for live at the witch trials at this moment

bb (bbrz), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Have to go with Grotesque. And This Day takes Hex out of the top spot for me.

Brakhage (brakhage), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:58 (twenty years ago)

btw the 'Expanded Edition' remaster is awesome. One of the few remasters where it's a major improvement that I can hear.

Brakhage (brakhage), Monday, 13 March 2006 21:16 (twenty years ago)

god damn it i've been looking for that fucking expanded remaster for like 2 yrs now and I REFUSE TO BUY IT ONLINE JUST BECAUSE BUT WHY CAN'T A SINGLE FUCKING STORE IN THE BALTIMORE-D.C. AREA STOCK THE THING?

wangdangsweetpentangle (teenagequiet), Monday, 13 March 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Imported. I got mine online for like $16 shipped. It's the only way my friend-ah

Brakhage (brakhage), Monday, 13 March 2006 21:34 (twenty years ago)

THE LIGHT USER SYNDROME

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 02:06 (twenty years ago)

After 3 or 4 years (6 or 7 albums) of trying to "get" them, it all finally clicked with This Nation's Saving Grace, so I say that one.

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 02:16 (twenty years ago)

hex/peel/infotainment

adam (adam), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 02:31 (twenty years ago)

I first became aware of The Fall at age 35, with an album that came out when I was 24 (I think.)

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 02:41 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that's right, let's not leave the latecomers out of this. I am saddened to learn that this has been done before as I did look through the Fall threads first before posting. Perhaps I missed that one.

A lot of you guys aren't making it easy for me though with these tie votes. I really planned to count them all up, but if you nominate two or three at a time without stating a preference...?

god damn it i've been looking for that fucking expanded remaster for like 2 yrs now and I REFUSE TO BUY IT ONLINE JUST BECAUSE BUT WHY CAN'T A SINGLE FUCKING STORE IN THE BALTIMORE-D.C. AREA STOCK THE THING?

I find this post terribly inspiring, for I share your pain. In fact, I'm going to start a new thread on this topic. (not so much about that CD in particular but this thing of not being able to find shit in your own goddamn town)

All The Furniture Is In The Garage (Bimble...), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 05:20 (twenty years ago)

Slates was my first and will always have a place in my heart.. i had a choice between that cd and the Asides disc, im glad i got slates as I didnt see it for sale for many many years after that..

has anyone said fiend with a violin yet?? taped it off the radio and listened to that tape to death.. took years to find that cd which was ridiculously overpriced.. now you cant get it for a dollar.. it seem to be the best of those comps that seem to have the same material over and over again.. so i guess thats another favorite..

and while im here i may as well do a bit of complaining.. the early fall singles always seemed particuarly inspiring.. but i could never find that early fall '77-79' disc.. still to this day i have never come across a copy of it.. sure theres that newer one thats quite pricey and doesnt seem to have the same feel.. finally got a copy and its amazing.. everything i wanted it to be..

Perverted by Language
Grotesque
This Nation's Saving Grace

dar1a g (daria g), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 18:47 (twenty years ago)

five months pass...
I've always said "Perverted," but I've been re-listening to a bunch, and "Totale's Turns" just destroys!! It's like the perfect Fall album.

I'm at WORK, Otto! (samjeff), Friday, 8 September 2006 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

I was really hoping this thread was using "fall" as a synonym for "autumn."

Sean Braud1s (Sean Braudis), Friday, 8 September 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

I was, too...and I was gonna get all Village Green Preservation Society on ya...

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 8 September 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

How awesome is Fall In A Hole? The version of Slags shreds, but that's all I've heard. Is the rest totally rad?

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Friday, 8 September 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

Has there ever been any talk about an "ILM Fall Poll" for songs and albums?

Oh, and my vote is for 'This Nation's Saving Grace' as a non-comp and...'Hip Priests and Kamerads' for a comp.

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Friday, 8 September 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

Come on now, Hex has Winter, The Classical, Hip Priest, Who Makes The Nazis?, Mere Pseud Mag Ed (best song title EVER).

It's fucking incomparable.

Venga (Venga), Friday, 8 September 2006 22:50 (nineteen years ago)

i was total-e digging on totale's turns this morning.

flaneurie o'connor (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 8 September 2006 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

dragnet. dragnet. dragnet.

nerve pylon (flat_of_angles), Friday, 8 September 2006 23:00 (nineteen years ago)

Hex Enduction Hour is definitely their album that feels most like a masterpiece (really their only one that does), but other ones have more emotional resonance for me (early '90s LPs in particular).

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 8 September 2006 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

Eggheads, boneheads, queue
Queue for them
We were early and we were late
But, still: Live At The Witch Trials

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 8 September 2006 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

I'd buy Totale's Turns just for the version of Rowche Rumble.

Hex is probably the best one I've heard. A lot of my favourite Fall songs are spread across albums and singles in the 77-83 era so it's difficult to pick an actual album I like best.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 8 September 2006 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

Dragnet (or Slates if a weeny 10" qualifies)

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Friday, 8 September 2006 23:46 (nineteen years ago)

Mr. Que, all of Fall In A Hole is amazing, one of the best live albums of theirs. Room To Live songs with Marc Riley on them!

Bend Sinister

Stephen Bush (Stephen B.), Sunday, 10 September 2006 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

Did I say "Totale's Turns"?

I meant "The wonderful and frightening world".

Or Extricate. or..

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 11 September 2006 07:42 (nineteen years ago)

All of them except "Dragnet" or "Grotesque" and the couple I don't have, those ones really suck

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Monday, 11 September 2006 07:44 (nineteen years ago)

Nation's Saving Grace. Maybe. Just.

Why does my IQ changes? (noodle vague), Monday, 11 September 2006 07:45 (nineteen years ago)

Grotesque (or Slates if it qualifies)

sonofstan (sonofstan), Monday, 11 September 2006 07:49 (nineteen years ago)

When will we ever get over the Fall? It'll never happen. I'll be 80 years old and still playing The Fall. So does the Light User Syndrome have Brix on? Fuck it does doesn't it? I don't even have that one. Must rectify. I've got the other one where Brix came back (can't remember the name...Infotainment Scan??)

I am not Ted Nugent (Bimble...), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that's the second one she's on. It's maybe not as good as Cerebral Caustic.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

So was she on Cerebral Caustic as well? Please educate me.

I am not Ted Nugent (Bimble...), Monday, 11 September 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, great album. (Infotainment Scan was before, by the way. She's only on Cerebral Caustic and Light User Syndrome.) Looking at the credits - she wrote a lot of the music on Cerebral Caustic. Less on The Light User Syndrome, which is a bit more of a hodgepodge, though still has some good stuff (it's got that *suite* piece they did, "The Chiselers").

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

light user is way better than cerebral caustic. for one thing, cerebral caustic SOUNDS awful.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know about that - it's certainly no Are You Are Missing Winner. Can't see how Light User is much better quality. But Cerebral Caustic has "The Joke" and "The Aphid" and the great Mothers cover so it definitely wins for me.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

Of course, I have the factory cassette of Cerebral Caustic. Sounds good on cassette.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

it's all about HEX!
