is this 'good emo'?

ethan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No it's the most overplayed song EVER.

Ronan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

selected verses:

you got a great car / yeah what's wrong with it today? / i used to have one too / maybe i'll come and have a look

so what do you do? / oh yeah i wait tables too / no i havent heard your band / cause you guys are pretty new / but if you dig on vegan food / well come over to my work / i'll have 'em cook you something / that you'll really love wait / who's that guy just hangin' at your pad / he's lookin' kinda bummed /you broke up that's too bad / i guess it's fair if he always pays the rent / and he doesn't get bent about / sleeping on the couch when i'm there

ethan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is it even emo to start with?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's been in like 50 movies and a gazillion ads. Which is great--so no indie or emo. Go Dandy.

Mickey Black Eyes, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ned, did you read those lyrics?

ethan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The lyrics just sound like two junior-year undergrads at Berkeley comparing life and social diseases.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one of the best songs of last year, behind only digital love, pen expers, never change and some others.

if only the hives et al sounded like this

gareth, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and the lyrics are fucken hilarious!

gareth, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love the tongue and cheeck lyrics. They probably had to sell that song so much just to get their asses out of the record labels doghouse never mind this money making thing.

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Plus the video's got full frontal male nudity! That's gotta count for something, right?

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'two junior-year undergrads at Berkeley comparing life and social diseases' = EMO

ethan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fuck no. Dirt hippies.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blimey those are good lyrics. So it's good because I now have something to put next time a love-the-lyrics-hate-the-music thread comes up. It's dreadful and Gareth is a crackhead.

Tom, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

tom i love you today.

ethan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't even like the lyrics.

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i don't think the lyrics are funny or ironic at all, i think they're beautiful.

ethan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hm. Perhaps it's because I've been there in the guise of disinterested observer, but trust me, it ain't!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It fits the (orange) advert perfectly. Major corporation tries to connect its product to the 'festival' scene with a song that's taking the piss out of the people the ad's for......reminds me of romantic couples requesting REM's 'the one I love' on the radio for valentines day....'a simple prop, to occupy my mind'

Mat O, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I must say I love the idea of mass response derailing these mean- spirited and misanthropic songs by taking them at face value or out of context. I don't like the orange ad though. (And come to think of it romantic couples who choose to listen to REM are probably a bit dumb, though not as dumb as if they *did* pay attention to what Stipe is singing).

Tom, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So Courtney Taylor once did an interview where he said he was describing his perfect lifestyle bla bla bla with those lyrics. and I don't think he was being ironic either. I love the Dandy Warhols, but if I heard them first now as opposed to 4 years ago I don't think I would. as much. strange.

Bill, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Speaking of ironic, wasn't it Iggy Pop's Lust for Life on some Cruise Ship ad?

Mickey Black Eyes, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah that's so stupid that they took a song about way-cool heroin and it about HAPPINESS or JOY or some bullshit.

ethan, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Only yesterday I learned this is the Vodafone song that I secretly have liked for some time now. But shit, if Gareth likes it, I can come right out and say so. ;)It's the Stones rip-off riff that somehow works wonders.

Omar, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The reason why "lust for life" was used for the cruise ship ad is that the cruise ship has a special cruise that is marketed for druggies...from pot to speed and x is sold on board and consumed in international waters.

as for the dandy wharholes...yeck...

richee, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Courtney Taylor is quite possibly Satan's emmisarry on Earth.

Judd Nelson, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Brown Sugar" is one of the Stone's best songs ever!

TMFTML (TMFTML), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth, have you checked yr marble collection recently?

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

You should hear Mr Taylor's answer to that when asked on air.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Used to LOVE LOVE LOVE this track (and the Dandys in general), but I must admit the overplay killed it for me. Plus, I have an irrational hatred of cell phones, I don't know why, I just do.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 30 October 2002 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Masonic Boom to thredd!

Charlie (Charlie), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 23:58 (twenty-three years ago)

it is far from emo.

mary b. (mary b.), Thursday, 31 October 2002 11:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't be objective about the dandy warhols. i'm sorry. my love for them knows no rationalism and cannot be quantified nor qualified.

but to judge them by just one song, severely misses the point.

kate, Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I just love how everyone forgot about the other song they were judged by beforehand, "Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth".

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

That was shit too.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

great video and a great album though.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

i liked that one too!

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

"everyday should be a holiday"!

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

dandy warhols are the worst singles band on earth. i listen to the albums and skip the singles, invariably. i don't think i've actually listened to last junky more than twice. boho does have that great guitar riff, though. (proven by rockologist -rockist rockologist?- NOT to be musically the same as brown sugar. this is actually true. they paid a musicologist to prove by science that it was homage, not plagiarism.)

kate, Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Same Musicologist who wrote Sloans bio?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i wasn't dissing it, kate. i like all their singles i've heard.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Tv Theme Song not good enough?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 October 2002 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Dr C is k-korrekt

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 31 October 2002 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

actually, tv theme song and holiday were quite ace singles. just the vastly popular ones really suck. hrmmm, there's an indie snob somewhere inside me and he's just dying to get out!!!

kate, Thursday, 31 October 2002 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Admit it Kate, you yearn for your days on dandysrule@northwest.com with all the flame wars about cracksmoking, transvestite, blading australian Scottish nationalist 14 year old girls.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 October 2002 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

wow, lots of dandy-hating on this thread. I dunno, I have the mp3 but probably wouldn't buy the album---anyway, I prefer "horse pills".

webcrack (music=crack), Thursday, 31 October 2002 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, it's true. If it wasn't for dandysrule, mark one, I'd never have met Mr Noodles, and my life would be sad indeed!

Horse Pills was the Best! Song! Ever! for about three weeks in 2000.

kate, Thursday, 31 October 2002 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

say it with me "Yo Bitch!"

I'd never have met Mr Noodles, and my life would be sad indeed!

But we've never met. Yet without Dandyrules, there would have been no the Plungers, nor the John Heppen Booze Explosion, or 22 Shirts or DHK shirts and great vampire writers who in their spare time write press releases for bands!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 1 November 2002 02:44 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
YO, BITCH!!!

Ha ha, I was googling, trying to find The Plungers' homepage, and this is all that came up. Dammit.

I'm trying to think if I should buy Kissy Chrissy a new Plunger tomorrow as a present.

"Why don't these assholes have rightwing bands make them some rightwing music for their rightwing jerkoff politics?" Taylor-Taylor wrote. "Oh, because rightwing people aren't creative, visionary or any fun to be around. Nor are they productive or even introspective about it."

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Wednesday, 16 December 2020 22:45 (five years ago)

this song sucks

brimstead, Wednesday, 16 December 2020 23:10 (five years ago)

maybe a freestyle or hi-nrg version would kick

brimstead, Wednesday, 16 December 2020 23:10 (five years ago)

Dandys Suck OK

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Thursday, 17 December 2020 00:10 (five years ago)

Good song.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 17 December 2020 00:11 (five years ago)

In an incredibly weird coincidence, I was clearing out my flat this weekend, opened a box I hadn't looked in since I moved in, and on the top was the T-Shirt that Peter was wearing on the cover of this album.

It's incredibly faded, the lettering has all but come off, and the safety pin is so corroded it no longer opens.

I couldn't bring myself to chuck it, it has so many associations. I no longer know if the band is even still going, let alone if they still have fans - some of whom might want such a piece of rock memorabilia?

(Also, I went to look up photos of the album to compare how the shirt has aged - honestly never noticed before there's a freaking Confederate Flag on it?)
