Speaking of album releases, Vice recently told TMT that The Boredoms are set to release a 6-CD box set. No street date has been set, and there really isn't information beyond what I've already said ("The Boredoms are set to release a 6-CD box set"), but it's exciting nonetheless! What is yet to be uncovered, though, is even a general description of the box set. Since, technically, the Boredoms are now named the Voordoms (fun fact: the "V" in Voordoms represents a turntable stylus, the infinity symbol that's supposed to be there represents two records, and the band is the motor), questions remain: will the box feature old demos, jams, and maybe live material from the Boredoms era? Or will this actually be six discs of NEW material??

sure, they didn't say anything about it, but i'm already excited.

the amount of money i've spent on obscure boredoms side projects over the years is truly ridiculous. i was a mad collector at one point. i bet if we added the amount of money we've collectively spent on boredoms japanese imports over the years we could buy a small car.

by some amazing stroke of luck i'll be in the Scotland the prior weekend, and in London from the 29th to June 2nd.

if anyone has a rumor about an NYC show, out with it now? Because if I try to drag my gf to a Boredoms show during our first night of a London vacation, she might stab me with scissors.

I know the neighborhood but have never been inside Sheperd's Bush Empire. Pretty big, right? Is it the equivalent of our Irving Plaza or our Beacon Theater?

Because if I try to drag my gf to a Boredoms show during our first night of a London vacation, she might stab me with scissors.

ha! you should just take your girlfriend to the boredoms show, nutramentmike! i think dragging your significant other to a boredoms show would be quite romantic (perhaps this is why i am not dating anyone right now?!) anyway, if it's anything like when i last saw them last, they'll turn the lights off in the beginning and EYE will spin around wires around with big shining lights on the end of it, which is a very pretty effect. it is easy to appreciate aesthetically even if you are not into the music.

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

actually, my ex gf had fun at the boredoms show, not to mention a Ruins show. I think these bands get a bad rap as noisemakers when in fact they are really just fun time rock music people at heart

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

I know the neighborhood but have never been inside Sheperd's Bush Empire. Pretty big, right? Is it the equivalent of our Irving Plaza or our Beacon Theater?

I took a date to the Boredoms, but it was my ex-girlfriend's best friend, so that's another hill to climb. She dug the lights and got bored of the drummel at the same time I did.

Washable School Paste (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

shepherds bush empire a great venue, probably the best of its size in london. the bbc used to film tv shows there. boredoms will slay (i should buy some tix...)

yeah but still fun. it's not like when I took her to Black Dice, which I tried to tell her was actually not the harshest thing we could have seen

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

yeah they have loads of female fans!

one of my friends described a boredoms set many years ago as being so loud and punishing that he had to tear up all his cigarettes and stick the filters in his ears, but they're not like that anymore. v?redoms were like watching a hippie drum circle or something. noisier than the starry-eyed jamminess of albums like VCN but still on that general wavelength.

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

dammit i can't seem to write that infinity symbol!

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

Ticketmaster has a Boredoms show in Cleveland on the 28th, the night after the Columbus show, so there will hopefully be more coming out of the woodwork.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

Well, it's no secret that Mike reads ILM from time to time, but the actual content of that first paragraph isn't particularly packed with insight, so I assume you're talking about the style.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

No it's pretty much word for word with a couple of edits.

am0n (am0n), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

There's nothing in that Beta piece that sounds like Powell's first paragraph, though, apart from the fact that they both tell the history of the band.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

If this is it, I'm not convinced. Both of you are just stating facts:

The Boredoms broke up in 1998 after what the band considered to be their most perfect musical performance ever at the Fuji-Rock festival.

The Boredoms S/D thread (circa April/May 2003) has a lot of the rundown on the current band sideprojects.

"The Boredoms" only exists in the minds of the ATP folk and equally opportunistic booking agents in USA/Europe. This band is actually known in Japan as The "VOOredoms" (or a variation of, the band changes their name regularly).

The V?‡REDOMS played New Years Eve in Yokohama, and later eYe DJ-d a set at shinjyuku liquid room in Tokyo.

However, the majority of the band lives in Kyoto... far to the South of Tokyo on the main island of Japan (Honshu). It's a 2.5 hour ride by bullet train (shinkansen) and is about $200 roundtrip. Or you can take overnight bus which'll run you about $135 roundtrip.

I will take a look sometime tonight and see if anything Boredoms related is happening in metro Tokyo in the next couple weeks.

Stylus (10/23/2006):
Technically, the Boredoms don’t exist. They broke up in 1998 after the Fuji Rock festival. Eye, the dreadlocked nutjob-cum-visionary-cum-nutjob who had started the band 12 years earlier, declared their set perfect. Their guitarist, Yamamoto, destroyed his instrument. Boredoms R.I.P, 1986-1998.

VV (7/8/2005):
And then? The Boredoms broke up. Or maybe just Yamamoto left, shattering his guitar at the climax of the Fuji Rock Festival in August of 1999, after what he deemed "the perfect set."

Douglas Wolk (10/19/2004):
I've heard it said that Boredoms actually broke up in 1998, when they played a "perfect" show at the Fuji Rock festival and Yamamotor smashed his guitar, and that the current band is either called Vooredoms (with or without an infinity sign replacing the "oo") or 7V07.

********************************************************************

from gygax!'s interview with Seiichi Yamamoto in Osaka 2003:

"and then i left the band, on stage at fuji-rock, i just threw up my guitar and it fell down and exploded, we had played the most perfect music we could ever play."

Four sources repeating the same factual anecdote. I still don't see what the problem is.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

In fact, that so many sources tell the same story in a similar way should suggest that it's NOT plagiarism.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

They broke up in 1998 after the Fuji Rock festival

is there a boot of this show?

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 22:38 (nineteen years ago)

true, I do read ILM here and there (and was actually coming on to look up something about an Eye-related project), but the thought that I'd've *plaigiarized* anyone on the site is kinda absurd and offensive. oh well. as john suggests, I was just stating facts that have been stated in every piece written about the band in the last couple of years.

there's also stuff after the first paragraph, hey.

mike powell (mike powell), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

So wait did everyone just steal from gygax! or did Eye repeat this story elsewhere?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 23:00 (nineteen years ago)

Eye refuses to talk about the breakup or does so in vague language.

Yamamoto is the only one who's talked about it. Even the Studio Voice monster issue really glosses over it.

My bad for calling Mike out because I think he was just naively grazing off of the other citations.

OK, here's the funny thing....

I remember that gygax! post, and I remember pointing out that I had seen a group that was very much the Boredoms (ie, Seiichi was there) at a festival in Irvine on July 4, 1999. There is even a photo from this show in the insert to VCN.

If you look at the quotes above, only the VV one has the correct date (ie, they apparently broke up in August 1999, not 1998). The fact the others all have the same incorrect year would tend to corroborate that they were all using the info that was originally posted by gygax! (!)

I couldn't tell, but I thought Seichi wasn't at the This Ain't No Picnic 1999 in Irvine

OK I may very well be wrong. I was under the impression that Boredoms = big group with guitar and bass and when Seiichi left they became Voordoms = just eYe+drummers. Maybe there was a transitional period I don't know about?

But if Seiichi was replaced with another guitar player, it seems to me it would be a bit presumptuous for him to say the group ended when he left. It's just semantics I guess.

am0n (am0n), Thursday, 26 October 2006 22:20 (nineteen years ago)

Nope. When Yamamoto left, Boredoms broke up.

The last thing he recorded with the band was the Phish cover, around the same time as Karera Musication's (Boredoms -EYE) soundtrack for Ichi The Killer.

Yamamoto's on good terms with the rest of the band, his projects often play on the same bills as other post-Boredoms projects. He has a new band called Para which he started after his wife died in a car accident while on tour with DMBQ in the USA last year.

So, if Yamamoto(r) did tour with the band in 1999, then we do have a media relying on media relying on media relying on gygax! un-factoid situation (since it was 1999 then, not 1998)

Case solved.
