Bad Religion Into The Unknown
Chuck Eddy has sung its praises and probably others have joined in.

For me personally, it would have to be the pre-Cowboys Pantera stuff. For the time it was nothing to be ashamed of; they did a nice job of injecting Van Halenesque showmanship into a harder Priest/early Leppard crunch. I still play "I Am The Night" when i am feeling nostalgic. It sounds dated but fun.

Disowned

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

That isn't the same thing at all...

Read the thread.

I've heard Robert Smith say he doesn't like The Top at all.
I love that album. I'd say it's maybe my 5th favorite of the CURE's.

celtic frost, *cold lake* and *vanity/nemisis* (which i believe tom g warrior now dismisses as being "not real celtic frost albums," even though they're a lot more entertaining than his new one.)

White Zombie - Psycho Head Blowout and Soulcrusher
Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers - L.A.M.F.
Kate Bush - The Cathy Demos (okay, so this was never an official release, but I came to the conclusion it's the best thing she's ever done after hearing the cleaned-up fan release)

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

cold lake is so horrible

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

kraftwerk - s/t

SQUARECOATS (plsmith), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

most recently:
- various songs from Mcluskyism
- does the members of Islands claiming that the Unicorns never existed count as "disowning" them?

The La's

Jam (1020am), Thursday, 11 May 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

David Bowie, Never Let Me Down.

Grant Hart has said that Candy Apple Grey was a terrible record to be their first on a major label. And that Husker Du would have been much better served if Flip Your Wig was their first on Warner.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Thursday, 11 May 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

The Beta Band said their s/t album was the worst of the year. Might've been my favorite.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 11 May 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

I'd guess that, on some level, Prince (or his management, or someone at Warner's) has officially disowned -Batman-. In spite of the fact that the album topped the Billboard Charts at #1, as did the "Batdance" single, no song from it has ever appeared on a Prince best-of, that I know of. (Unless you count "200 Balloons" being included on the B-Sides collection).

The two-disc Greatest Hits collections and the btes-of on Rhino includes dozens of singles (undesputably great singles, of course) that didn't top the Billboard singles charts. "Batdance" did, but it's not included on either.

This thread was MADE for Billy Joel/Attila!

I wouldn't mind hearing Bryan Adams's disco hit for the first time in a quarter-century.

And what's Lou Reed's current opinion of Metal Machine Music anyways?

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 11 May 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

Pride -- see his collaboration with Zeitkratzer on the live version a couple years back.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 11 May 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

I think the majority of fans now consider "Parklife" the best Blur album although Damon Albarn still disowns it.

Also, Neil Young's "On The Beach" to thread!

And.. Not albums, but Bob Marley's "Buffalo Soldier" and Bob Dylan's "Blind Willie McTell" are still excellent examples of this.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 11 May 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

Was "Bluejeans & Moonbeams" disowned?

Sparkle Motion's Rising Force, Thursday, 11 May 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

A reply received from Spencer Krug about the Wolf Parade album, which to many, Isaac Brock made a mess of.

listen.
I'm in Wolf Parade, and I agree completely. We
probably all agree with you. Thanks for the honesty
and all that, and don't worry, it's not being taken
the wrong way. It's a little heartbreaking, yes, for
you have confirmed our own insecurities about the
record, but a little broken heart goes a long when one
is schrelpin' the tunes, bra. So thanks.
That album could be way better, but all this shit
happened and we just needed to get it over and done
with. We made the best mixes we could out of the
tracks we had recorded (we mixed the thing 3 times)
and then all these wheels were already in motion and
money had been spent and blah blah blah. There was no
more time or money. And really, it's just a record, so
buck up you big baby. If we can live with it, so can
you.
Just do what I do: Don't listen to it, ever, and hope
that the next one is better. In fact, just pretend
that this record doesn't even exist and that our next
record is the first full length. We are all really
excited about the next one, which we will do ourselves
and not in a studio. So don't give up on us just yet,
and try to untwist your panties from the bunch that
they are currently in. This record is coming out
whether any of us like it or not.
Thanks for liking the other stuff, though.
Spencer

weezer's Pinkerton is the strongest example of this in my mind.

Steve Goldberg (Steve Goldberg), Friday, 12 May 2006 12:39 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, you must have really been whining it up when you wrote to that Wolf Parade guy. He definitely seems to be making fun of you.

Anyway... wasn't there a Grandaddy compilation disc that was publicly denounced by the band as something they had no part of? Of course this happens all the time with compilations, but it was especially striking for how much the record company had done the thing up in faux-Grandaddy trappings. It definitely wasn't just a "Grandaddy's Greatest" or, better yet, "Great Grandaddy" type thing. I think Concrete Dunes is the one I'm thinking of but I'm not sure.

And of course there are things like the Capitol versions of the Beatles albums in the US, which were being derided by the band in interviews as early as 1965 or so, methinks...

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Friday, 12 May 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

hehe it wasn't me who sent the message. I thought it was a pretty nice reply to be honest. They weren't very happy with the poppy mixes that were on the album.

Fynci (Fynci), Friday, 12 May 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

it was a compilation of the first eps put out by someone; that stuff was otherwise available on broken down comforter collection, I believe; they preferred people buy that one (xpost)

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 12 May 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

"does the members of Islands claiming that the Unicorns never existed count as "disowning" them?"

I disown that Islands album. yuck.
