CD Rot

Those of us who combine our love of Throbbing Gristle with membership of the National Trust will have seen an advertisement in our members only magazine fora a CD file system, kind of like a posh leatherbound version of the famous CD book/album/call it what you willl that we have discussed before. What alarms me is that the manufacturers refer to something called "CD rot", which they claim is caused by the plastic boxes CDs live in. I think they are trying to take advantage of gullible pensioners, and should be reported to the ASA ASAP.

What do you think?

And here's me thinking this was a thread about the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album...

.. or gullible TG fans?

Disc Rot is real, I've got a couple of older Coil and Foetus CDs that have it. They start to turn copper coloured near the outer edge and skipping occurs near the end of the albums. It isn't caused by the plastic boxes though.

CD rot / wear

my copy of Gigantic 2 suffers from this rendering that last Birdland song (more) unlistenable.

The search was so slow so I hope there isn't a thread already about this if so a link would be great, anyway...

Yeah, what a loser.

So how do the record companies store their original recordings? Perhaps we should have the same system. Personally I am very happy that my wife's "Best of Cliff Richard" CD is now unplayable

No wonder Freddie Starr moved to Burton.

I have a CD of Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons' performed by the English Concert (Archive) that was issued as the very first batch of commercially available CDs; in fact I bought the disc in order to have one of the fist issues. In fact it was another six months or so before I bought the CD player in which to place it. I am pleased to say the CD after all these years is still playing as it always has.

I have stopped borrowing audio books on CD from my local library. Invariably one of the CDs gets stuck half way through the story, with the narrator repeating a phrase over and over again.

This happened to Skullflower's Xaman due to manufacturing errors. Really unfortunate in that case, since it's OOP and there are 3 songs on it that aren't on the vinyl version. I've read that almost all copies of Xaman are now unplayable.

Thank goodness for S!sk.

Thanks for starting this thread - just this Monday, a friend returned some CDs to me after a few years and I noticed my Ruts Peel Sessions had rotted. I checked the disc, and it turns out it was made in 1990 by P.D.O., so I'm going to try returning it to them for a replacement. I'll check my Gang of Four one when I get home.

"Eventually the corrosion will cause sound problems not unlike LP surface noise..."

So I'll end up with a 'vinyl' collection after all these years!

By the way, how do you italisize on this thing?

tolstoy (tolstoy), Thursday, 11 May 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

With 'i' inside it.

Bollocks!

tolstoy (tolstoy), Thursday, 11 May 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

To start italics, type a left-pointing angle bracket (less than sign), i, right-pointing angle bracket (greater than sign). No spaces between them. When you're done, do the same thing only with a forward slash (/) before the i.
