The more complete "artist" dylan or bowie

i hesitate to start this, but

who has lead a career as a more complete artist? what i mean is who walks through it all (atleast publicly) with more complete mask?

Dylan has often spoken about the bob dylan mask, there's the whole renaldo and clara thing, constant revision of his past and future, and so on.

Bowie might constantly revise, but he seems to be too obviously playing with what his public role is. In comparison to dylan it seems almost too plastic.

Reading Dylan's book currently and it's almost frightful that he has the audicity to write such a great book -- adding to the litany of his other genius qualities. It's too much. Anyway, Dylan cooks Bowie over the campstove.

id agree, but has any other popular musician ever really gone as far into non-reality as dylan? or self created reality, perhaps....

thanks dan...im actually positing this legitimately...ive been reading the interviews book and man..the humanity never seems to exist...but then again, it does...theres a lot of humanity, but very little human...

how many dylan threads do we have here? shedloads! now, everyone expects bowie to be a complete projection. plenty of people think that dylan is faking it too. but on the whole dylan: credible genius; bowie: fabulous artist...but i think bob is actually the bigger artist

To wax abstract a bit, it always seemed to me that there was very little personality to the entity we know as "Bob Dylan." He's like a wind that blows through a field. More a mirror or a conduit than a singular force. A mysterious concept or consciousness more than an identity. It's very difficult for me to articulate this feeling I get from his music. His music feels like it formed from beyond the boundaries of a solitary individual (certain songs of his really give me a strong sense of this, like "Hard Rain," for example).

Bowie, on the other hand, seems like someone who forcibly underwent changes in his persona, image, and music as a means of marketing himself to the world, and maybe even because he was unsure of or uncomfortable with who he was. His approach never rang true or honest to me, although he also made some good music.
