who has lead a career as a more complete artist? what i mean is who walks through it all (atleast publicly) with more complete mask?
Dylan has often spoken about the bob dylan mask, there's the whole renaldo and clara thing, constant revision of his past and future, and so on.
Bowie might constantly revise, but he seems to be too obviously playing with what his public role is. In comparison to dylan it seems almost too plastic.

how many dylan threads do we have here? shedloads! now, everyone expects bowie to be a complete projection. plenty of people think that dylan is faking it too. but on the whole dylan: credible genius; bowie: fabulous artist...but i think bob is actually the bigger artist

Bowie, on the other hand, seems like someone who forcibly underwent changes in his persona, image, and music as a means of marketing himself to the world, and maybe even because he was unsure of or uncomfortable with who he was. His approach never rang true or honest to me, although he also made some good music.
