Just a few hours to go, so let's start here.

I've been backstage in Athens all week, and have live-blogged a preview (and predictions) directly from the final dress rehearsal.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Saturday, 20 May 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, but there's no Kate Ryan. Boo!

pleased to mitya (mitya), Saturday, 20 May 2006 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

Not very subtle voting instructions:

http://www.furanes.net/ebm/romania.jpg

Or Ukraine, I suppose, as I heart her.

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 20 May 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

Oh Edward, we can but hope.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Saturday, 20 May 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

in the betting (off Ladbrokes): Swedish Carola remains your 3/1 favourite, but beneath her movements are being made. Anna Vissi has now drifted to 9/2, having been as strong as 5/2 favourite in recent weeks. Romania are clear third favourites at 5/1, while there have been hyooge moves in the market for Lordi and Russia, who both find themselves at 6/1 - I vaguely remember Lordi having been 33/1 at one point. Bosnia have also drifted slightly, 13/2. The UK are at 10/1, with Germany and Ukraine both 16/1. Ukraine were 125/1 before the semi-final. Other than that, not much change else where. I still remain convinced that Latvia each-way at 80/1 is a very good idea.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

i'm hoping the russia in immigration will do their work! ahaha

nique (nique), Saturday, 20 May 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

I have a hard time voting for an unknown ukrainian when poor Ani Lorak is stil out there.

Plus, there's this from her bio: "Tina Karol is, perhaps, the only young Ukrainian singer who has managed to combine in herself seemingly incompatible things: the fighting spirit of the Ukrainian army, peace-keeping, a meteoric musical career and an ingratiating smile…" (Of course, the fact that her real name is Tatiana Liberman is not mentioned.)

Ack!

pleased to mitya (mitya), Saturday, 20 May 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

The best long-shot bet might well be for the Lithuanian middle-managers (I heard 150/1 yesterday?) DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON LATVIA! Sweden is a poor bet, as there are rumours of her voice packing up - but Carola's team are right little spinners, and she could be just Saving Herself. Germany at 16/1 are also superb odds - I'd say Top Three Cert.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Saturday, 20 May 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

I've been tinkering with my predictions for ages now, and I'll never be right, but I'm going to try to do it, since you did, Mike!

1. Romania - Similar to last year's song but BETTER, MIT KEY CHANGE. Let's hope the rubbish stage doesn't squash it to death. Oh god, this is just wishful thinking isn't it.
2. Bosnia - Properly _classy_. The "Lane Moje" effect, definitely.
3. Finland. I personally think it's rubbish. Wig Wam didn't win last year, and I don't see why this will this year, but I hope it hoovers up the "this contest's crap, let's slash the seats" vote.
4. Greece. They've been dead consistent lately, and the home-town thingo, cf Athena two years ago. Also, Teh Gays love Anna Vissi.
5. Germany. Buzz! Buzz! A bit of a "grower". If this had gone through semis, I'd say "maybe winner", as people would have heard it twice..
6. Sweden. Rubbish song. BWO would have walked this. Not a patch on "Love Isn't Love/Framling" is it now.
7. Ukraine. My god, this is great on the stage. The beat is a bit intrusive, but GREAT VOICE.
8. Russia. The mullet is unsightly, the song sounds a lot like "Lonely No More" by Rob Thomas, harumph, piano gimmick, neighbourly votes feh feh feh.
9. Croatia. Horny blokes heart Severina! Love the song too.
10. Lithuania. A crime against humanity. How could this do well when last year's sublime "Little By Little" came LAST?
11. UK. Just SOUNDS like a #11.
12. Denmark. If only it weren't _after_ Germany.
13. Ireland. While I despise it, I can see its appeal. It's still awful, though.
14. FYROM - Dull song, but with the Serbs out, this will hoover.
15. Armenia. he's cute. Song much improved, but still a bit ropey.
16. Malta. Better than it deserves, due to Fab having some recognition.
17. Latvia. Another mess. Possibly the worst "song" in the bunch, apart from Lithuania.
18. Turkey. No, BBC, this didn't win the semifinals. Someone is having you on.
19. Israel. Annoying enough to do well but I'm kind of hoping its duff place in the draw erases this chance as it's rubbish.
20. Norway. Cannot see this picking up that many votes.
21. Spain. Not nagging enough.
22. Switzerland. Can't even remember it!
23. Moldova. Dan Balan next time, pls!
24. France. Whatever.

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 20 May 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

Go Lordi.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

Gah, I have to go out and will miss Lordi. Someone Youtube their performance please.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 20 May 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

The east euro mafia are bound to vote one of their own(prob Ukraine maybe russia). But enough metal heads may vote(if they actually watch) to get Lordi in top 10.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

ed otm above that the Swedish song is rub, at least compared to its place among the favourites.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT THING?

(i.e. welcome to Athens!)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

xpost to pfunkboy: it's not to do with any mafia, it's the large number of Slav etc countries, I suppose. Lobby Eurovision to be given English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish slots like in FIFA etc, and you'd place higher prob. ;)

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

That thing is a giant orange-like metal hive where Lordi rest between performances.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

I may at some point upstage have intimated that the staging of this year's contest was a bit rubbish. That opening has, quite frankly, hushed my mouth.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

I'm betting that Finland will do quite badly.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Here's Elena Paparizou. As is the winner's privilege, she is miming.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

I don't want the uk to win. I hate that song. I just wish we could be relegated!

I just watch it out of habit since i've always watched at least the results part since i was about 5.
Its pretty hard to tell who will win though. Its Eurovision-it always has shocks.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

Seriously, the staging thus far really is fucking stunning.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

AND WE'RE AWAY!

With... Switzerland. The night has just got a hell of a lot less amazing.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh I couldn't resist putting a mighty £8 on Bosnia etc at 8.8 -- as ed said, it's properly classy. Recent odds movements down to 8.6 mean I could trade out for an ASSURED PROFIT of 20p yay!

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

At last I've found out what this reminds me of (at least the chorus): Koreana's 1988 "Hand in Hand".

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

Moldova's songwriter apparently wrote "Dschingis Khan"!?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

Moldova - this year's backmarker?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

She will get the pervs vote.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

hahahaha a scooter

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

It's like 9% too slow innit? NEW GENRE alert!

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

Moldova is brilliant! "Hey Loca, Give me give me your boca". What a chorus.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

They lost my vote. She put clothes back on..

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

SCOOTER MAKE THE EUROVISION! Sort of.

Israel. This will be the first tea-break of the evening for much of Europe.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

Norwegian commentator: "first white suit of the evening!"

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

Moldovan bloke looked like Sezer off Big Brother.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

ooh he's singing a bit sharp isn't he? Nerves? :/

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

xpost to bloody swygart: gin break

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

It's the first piano of the evening!

Christ, this man is a twat. Why all the swaying? Marvel at his mediocre footwork!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

I'm just going to c+p the following statement for most of the entries.

This song is utter wank.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

And that's the first miming of 'listening' by cupping the ears of the evening.

HANDCLAP BREAKDOWN! Where did that come from? Why did that come from?

Welcome to the semi-finals, kids.

Next: Latvia. I didn't put money on them, in the end.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

Can I be the 1st to say ITS THE FLYING PICKETS!!!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

HE'S READING THE LYRICS! CHEAT! FILTH!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

I'm always wondering how much our commentator (who's quite popular as such by the way, and will forever be remembered as Eurovision Jostein) has picked from own brain, and how much from press releases etc. Did your respective commentators mention "first acappella ever in ESC"?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

Dear Christ, I'm glad I didn't back this now.

What is that... thing? Is it specifically there to prove that is possible to have less crazy legs than the feller with the hair?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

I guess I should play the part of stereotypical Norwegian sore loser though:

Hmph this wd never have happened without Wig Wam paving the way last year grumble.

;)

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I knew the UK were exempt. This is a bit like the worst teams not going down from the Conference because other sides are being demoted for financial reasons. A bit.

I think the UK should be put into administration and forced to play-off against Vatican city-state and Kingston-upon-Hull.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 20 May 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

If we played against Hull, we'd get pwned by Kingmaker.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 20 May 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

With P Heaton on spiritual backing vocals.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

This would never have been possible without Wig Wam last year.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 20 May 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

Btw. I wonder which charitable cause the Swiss entry was for. It must have been some, at least it sounded like "We Are The World" or "Do They Know It's Christmas".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 20 May 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

No no read the thread Geir, it's "Hand in Hand".

Hopefully you didn't bet much.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 20 May 2006 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

Next year, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Faroe Islands, Shetland, Greenland and Åland should all host their own entries. Will make the voting more fair.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 20 May 2006 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

No. Then KT Tunstall might represent us. Or worse, Deacon Blue might reform...

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

I've never really understood why, in recent years, the UK seems to have insisted on handicapping ourselves every time by sending the equivalent of Herford United to play an International fixture.

Once upon a time we used to send established and successful acts like Matt Monro, Kathy Kirby, Sandie Shaw, Cliff Richard, Lulu, Mary Hopkin, Clodagh Rogers, New Seekers, Olivia Newton John, The Shadows, Brotherhood Of Man and Lynsey De Paul - and consequently (and probably predictably) we almost invariably used to do reasonably well....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Saturday, 20 May 2006 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

No one will touch Eurovision now. Maybe with Lordi winning more "different" types of acts from the norm will enter. If Lordi can win anything can win. Would be good to have a contest where not all acts stick with pop or ballads.

Have a look at Who would you like to see enter Eurovision 2007?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 21 May 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

I suppose Lordi will be at the Donington Monsters Of Rock Festival. Literary.......

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 22 May 2006 00:16 (nineteen years ago)

It wasn't really a surprise that Lordi won it, especially as Iceland got knocked out at the semi-final stage - did anyone seriously expect the f-word to make it to the final? - it was one of the few songs one could actually remember afterwards (even if its tune was a crossbreed of "Livin' On A Prayer" and Alice Cooper's "Poison") and it was sufficiently different to stand out.

This year saw a definite retreat. Too many indifferent, soppy and tuneless ballads.

Las Ketchup were superb (Xenomania remix Chris Rea's "On The Beach" - "Duty free, duty free, duty freeeeeeee!") but went completely under the heads of the voting dullards.

Lithuania was embarrassing. There's a fine line between "wacky" and "sad" and they overstepped it.

Turkey had a strong verse, an iffy chorus and a huge dull slab of nothing in the middle.

The Latvian accappella entry was genuinely intriguing for the first 40 seconds but then became banal.

The curious thing about the German entry was that, if you strip away the C&W trappings, "No No Never" is a very run-of-the-mill, Diane Warren-style power ballad complete with rhetorical lyric triplets.

Nowhere near as good as 2005. The Norway entry (Wigwam?) last year did a much better job of resuscitating stadium rock than Finland did this year, but obviously they neglected to include the comedy masks and "arockalypse."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 May 2006 07:48 (nineteen years ago)

Meanwhile, France and Ireland came out with the same song they've been doing in Eurovision for the last ten years.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 May 2006 07:49 (nineteen years ago)

Oh was that Ls Ketchup? That's pretty much where I tuned in.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 22 May 2006 07:51 (nineteen years ago)

The tactical voting was even more barefaced than usual - surely no country apart from Russia/Baltic States/ex-Soviet Union countries/Balkan states/Scandies can ever win again.

I thought our entry was absolutely fantastic!

Dr.C (Dr.C), Monday, 22 May 2006 08:27 (nineteen years ago)

As I said on one of the other Eurovision threads, "Teenage Life" was IMO the best British entry since "One Step Further," and both should have done better than they did (and '82 was another political minefield with the Falklands, the Austrian nun winning, etc.).

Saturday must have been the easiest pay cheque Nana Mouskouri has ever worked for.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 May 2006 08:32 (nineteen years ago)

Lithuania's song was basically "Vindaloo".

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 22 May 2006 08:47 (nineteen years ago)

Nowhere near as good as 2005. The Norway entry (Wigwam?) last year did a much better job of resuscitating stadium rock than Finland did this year, but obviously they neglected to include the comedy masks and "arockalypse."

I also have a theory that, for the Southern Europeans, make-up and tights was possibly even more provocative than monster masks.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 22 May 2006 11:06 (nineteen years ago)

Lordi aren't as good as Wig Wam, no, because WIG WAM, as I said on another thread, released a cover of Mel C's execrable "I Turn To YoU" as a single and made it sound GRATE.

I think this is a horrible result, but I'll save it for later.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 22 May 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

what about Poland?
votes in ESC 2006 was false!!!!!!!1

Magda, Tuesday, 23 May 2006 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

I don't even remember this year's Polish entry.

However, two of my three favourite entries (Iceland and Belgium) were knocked out already in the qualifying round. Like I said: We need Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Faroe Islands, Shetland and Åland all to enter next year's competition to bring some justice into ESC again! :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know what it was about the Eurovision in 2002 but I actually remember every song from it, and I only watched it a few times on video.

That was a pretty good year...... especially the entries from Sweden, Bosnia ("ooh.. there's a sound of music in the broken bell"), UK and of course Latvia :)

JTS (JTS), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

Teenage Life (by a 32 year old dickhead) was fucking awful. A true embarrassment.
The worst UK entry ever. I bet the whole of Europe was laughing at the UK when that was on.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

2002 seem to be a bad vintage IMO. The Swedish entry was good (their best in recent years), but the rest were mainly crap. Particularly the Latvian entry, which was one of their worst ever (The Latvian entry is otherwise usually among my favourites)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

One good thing with Lordi winning we might see less ballads.
Unless next year theres a reaction to a metal band winning.

I just hope the UK puts someone decent up for a change.

Geir, you are mental. 2002 was pretty good. 2003 and 2004 were better, though. 2006 is the worst year since 2000.

2006 is the worst year since 2000.
Just because a rock band won for a change?

Probably this year plenty of people who never watched it before tuned in. That has to be good for eurovision. Most of the songs sound the same so maybe more countries will try something else in future. Maybe ireland and france will stop making ballads!

I think it's because 2006 had a crapload of shitty songs. I'd name them, but I don't wanna (sound like DJ Martian).

I still maintain that Latvia 2002 rocked.
