He's the new Prince--if Prince moved to Detroit-- Maybe, maybe not.

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

He's more TTD than Prince, but he's okay. He'll never set the world on fire, but he's #1 in my car when the sun is out and the windows are down.

The new album doesn't have a single as great as "Dust" from the first record, but it's better overall.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

If you took the best half of the songs from the new Van Hunt and the best half of the songs from the new Prince, you'd have a monster of an album.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

I dig him. He's 100% pastiche, but it's a fun record.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

He's got a bit of a weird touch that keeps him from sounding like full-on pastiche to me (Ramones reference, Iggy cover, sense of humor that is usually missing from neo-soul). Mary J. Blige may carry more ultimate meaning, but I've actually been playing Hunt's record more than hers.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

"Dust" is one of my favorite singles of the decade and though the new album doesn't feature anything that transcendent, it's a lot better than I anticipated.

Though I have no idea what he's trying to do on "At The End Of The Slow Dance." It sounds like a Rick James/Interpol collaboration.

No need to start a new thread:

Van Hunt , shit yeah!

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

Alba,
That thread is ancient.

At any rate, I'm with Rickey. First listen, I thought, oh jeez not another floppy hat wearing soul singer singing in a tortured falsetto. Things got so good after the Stooges cover I reevaluated the entire record. We can get caught up in the image just as much as the A&R exec, we just get dismissive about it.

Jeff,

Rick James? Huh? Martin Fry maybe.

nine years pass...

New album out...had a cursory listen...sounded pretty good...

i find his voice too weak to carry slower songs a lot of the time. preferred the stuff like dust or hold her hand.
