The new album doesn't have a single as great as "Dust" from the first record, but it's better overall.

If you took the best half of the songs from the new Van Hunt and the best half of the songs from the new Prince, you'd have a monster of an album.

I dig him. He's 100% pastiche, but it's a fun record.

He's got a bit of a weird touch that keeps him from sounding like full-on pastiche to me (Ramones reference, Iggy cover, sense of humor that is usually missing from neo-soul). Mary J. Blige may carry more ultimate meaning, but I've actually been playing Hunt's record more than hers.

"Dust" is one of my favorite singles of the decade and though the new album doesn't feature anything that transcendent, it's a lot better than I anticipated.

Though I have no idea what he's trying to do on "At The End Of The Slow Dance." It sounds like a Rick James/Interpol collaboration.

That thread is ancient.

At any rate, I'm with Rickey. First listen, I thought, oh jeez not another floppy hat wearing soul singer singing in a tortured falsetto. Things got so good after the Stooges cover I reevaluated the entire record. We can get caught up in the image just as much as the A&R exec, we just get dismissive about it.

i find his voice too weak to carry slower songs a lot of the time. preferred the stuff like dust or hold her hand.
