Here is a clip, someone's cameraphone clip, by the look of it, from you tube, of dream theater playing live:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkdK4doF3s8&search=dream%20theater

they are the exemplars of the comparatively recent style "Progressive metal", music as an exercise in athletic achievement. How many notes can you play? 16ths? 32nds? Start at 64ths and work upwards if you want to step up to Dream Theater. How long can you keep it going for? Hello carpal tunnel syndrome, hello repetitive strain injury.

One of Dream theater's "things" is that they will book 2 nights at an auditorium, and on the second night, they will play a complete album - "Master of Puppets", for example, or "Dark Side of the Moon". The idea of Dream Theater covering something a little less obvious coule be kind of funny, I suppose - "Autobahn" or "From Gardens Where we Feel Secure" or "White Light, White Heat" could perhaps benefit from the DT mega-shred sound & feel being imposed upon it?

Based on your description, it would be fun to see them cover "Heroin."

Checking through the Dream Theater clips on "youtube", it looks like between 1/4 and 1/3 of them are bedroom guitar shredders filming themselves attempting to play along with petrucci's insane guitar solos.

In small doses I find them quite likeable, admirable, even. I really don't think I could sit through an entire concert of that, though.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 27 May 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

You find Dream Theater admirable or the bedroom guitar shredders?
