I love the albums avey tare and co have been releasing over the last few years. I was curious if anyone has any suggestions to any other groups that are just as strange, poppy, and hallucinatory as these guys?

Call me crazy, but the little bit of Animal Collective I've heard reminds me an acoustic version of the poppier extreme of Aphex Twin.

Van Dyke Parks - Song Cycle
Tom Ze - Com Defeito de Fabricação
Milton Nascimento - Milagre Dos Peixes [mostly "A Chamada"]

Anway, these are a just a few albums that have directly or indirectly influenced Animal Collective.

later animal collective, as many have said before this, sounds like early mercury rev on 'yerself is steam' and 'boces'.

Van Dyke Parks, Tom Ze & Milton Nascimento are all so so so much better than Animal Collective

In a half-hearted "oh right, yeah" fashion, yes.

You might actually like that new Danielson record, Ships. It's got a similar appeal, although I'm a big Sung Tongs/AC fan, and that one doesn't do it for me in particular. It might for you.

Os Mutantes, maybe?

T. Weiss (Timmy), Sunday, 28 May 2006 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

listening to some ras michael this morning (tom-heavy chanting with tons of black ark-era sonic slushing effects) i thought of ac, but i also know mr. tare is a big fan of the man.

imbidimts, Sunday, 28 May 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

the olivia tremor control "black foliage"
holy modal rounders "indian war whoop"
incredible string band "the hangman's beautiful daughter"

i don't like animal collective. ya'll knew that already, though.

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Sunday, 28 May 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

gil e jorge
tyrannosaurus rex
a million sloppy indie 7"s from when i was in high school

(the first two are better than animal collective. i like animal collective. y'all knew that already, though.)

also, p. bear told me in interview that his biggest influence making young prayer was the louvin brothers. damned if i can hear it, tho.

My wife gets really bummed when I listen to animal collective - feels, like she's affraid that I am gonna go postal and kill everyone. She hates when I play deerhoof too.

Here are two other current bands-that-I-love-but-whose-music-would-upset-average-people:

the sun city girls
man man

"From what I've heard so far, Psapp. "

That new Psapp album is very good! Such a nice blend of different ideas - I wasn't aware that I wanted a blend of Pram, early Piano Magic and the Roison Murphy solo album, but it turns out I did!

I always say this in the Animal Collective threads, but will rephrase: Bob Drake is something like what AC might become if they hit the hard parts in Song Cycle harder

Max Tundra - Mastered by Guy at the Exchange

I think Dominique has got a point with the Bob Drake link, but Drake feels to me like his interest and investment in his music is as a manifestion and vehicle for his craftsmanship (he's serious about being playful with it), whereas Animal Collective feel more in awe of their own music, like they're playing in these magic sounds they revere. Bob Drake is often silly, which he pretty much gets away with, but Animal Collective risk being kind of ridiculous because their music is escapist and very self-contained, and they seem so keen to be lost in the experience of it all, they seem to find it really easy to attach meaning to their music as some kind of discrete world of magic wonder. I think Bob Drake's less ambitious, but that's no bad thing. Animal Collective sound like kids (which everyone seems to pick up on in some way) and Drake sounds more like a producer (and more adult). Anyway, you don't want to risk bruising your relationship with your wife just for the sake of Animal Collective, especially not Feels.

Our Brother the Native, one of the first bands that I've heard that are pretty obviously influenced by AC. It's got a decent handle on the spook, but none on the verve.

deerhoof is weird, but more angular and jarring. some would say that are in fact tuneless. just a warning

Caribou (formerly Manitoba) remind me a bit of pop-ier side of AC.

I saw AC live and while it was interesting, it was something of a let down. it had some wonderful (breif) moments and a lot of lazy, droney filler.
