What do people want from music criticism?

I know plenty of people who just want a stamp of approval, a "buy it/don't buy it." I have a few other critic friends who feel like the job of a critic is to expose the underexposed good music that's out there.

I've always felt like criticism was an important end in itself. At its best (IMO), criticism deepens your understanding of a work of art by properly contextualizing it socially, historically and politically.

Anybody want to jump in on this?

We prefer to make other threads about this debate rather than actually discuss it directly.
