i just want to know what ppl are listening to who used to love discovery and have been let down ever since. please do not mention lcd soundsystem - BLECHH!! or whatever their modern day equivalent is. i have not listened to a lot of new music lately but i just downloaded 'choir practice' by lipps inc and it put me in a good mood... can anyone help with (hopefully new) uplifting dancey albums or even mixes?

karri miback (cruisy), Friday, 2 June 2006 03:51 (nineteen years ago)

This is some daft thread, punk.

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ is a GE Money Genie (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Friday, 2 June 2006 03:52 (nineteen years ago)

((((((DOPplur)))n)))u))))tttt (donut), Friday, 2 June 2006 03:55 (nineteen years ago)

no i want something new! that was a DAFT answer see

karri (cruisy), Friday, 2 June 2006 03:58 (nineteen years ago)

hey 'on to you' by lipps inc is also nice! but that doesnt necessarily mean i want something that sounds 80s. it can sound 80s tho

karri miback (cruisy), Friday, 2 June 2006 04:00 (nineteen years ago)

Have you got the Alan Braxe compilation yet?

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 2 June 2006 04:10 (nineteen years ago)

Mylo "Destroy Rock N Roll" is the closest anyone's come.

Tynan DeLong (TynanTynan!), Friday, 2 June 2006 04:16 (nineteen years ago)

i knew that alan braxe stuff already. i dont like mylo :(
i only meant to use daft punk as a very broad reference point - i guess im leading everyone astray! i guess the problem is i dont know what i want!! maybe someone should mention something i havent ever heard of. i like weird sounds and normal melodies. i think point by cornelius is a really good album, should i listen to some older cornelius too??

karri (cruisy), Friday, 2 June 2006 04:22 (nineteen years ago)

Basement Jaxx you big dummy.

How about some older KLF, or LFO?

thatoldsoul (thatoldsoul), Friday, 2 June 2006 04:22 (nineteen years ago)

yeah b jaxx covered! this girl i know who is my friends friend is marrying one of them!
describe lfo

karri miback (cruisy), Friday, 2 June 2006 04:26 (nineteen years ago)

Not just older LFO, his Sheath from a few years ago is great as well.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 2 June 2006 04:30 (nineteen years ago)

Vitalic?

Tape Store (Tape Store), Friday, 2 June 2006 04:31 (nineteen years ago)

nah, i like vitalic ok but it really doesnt fit into this thread, too nightmarish, although sometimes the textures are very nice and i defintieyl respect the craft

karri miback (cruisy), Friday, 2 June 2006 04:37 (nineteen years ago)

im now going to throw prince's parade into the mix and see if that stirs anything up??!

karri miback (cruisy), Friday, 2 June 2006 04:40 (nineteen years ago)

Tiga, maybe? Black Strobe? Fujiya & Miyagi (not too musically similar, but a similar air of fun)? The Presets? The Emperor Machine! (quite different but still unspeakably awesome)

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 2 June 2006 04:40 (nineteen years ago)

hm ok im going to try downloading fujiya and miyagi who i have never heard of

karri (cruisy), Friday, 2 June 2006 04:43 (nineteen years ago)

Hystereo

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 2 June 2006 04:44 (nineteen years ago)

Go for "Collarbone" and "In One Ear & Out the Other" first, them's good eatin'.

Also Chelonis R. Jones' album, the Kitsune compilations, the Ed Banger label (Justice, Uffie, Vicarious Bliss, Sebastian, etc).

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 2 June 2006 04:45 (nineteen years ago)

gawd you're picky.

pablo (Pablo A), Friday, 2 June 2006 04:46 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh, Hystereo seconded. And Cut Copy- the album's produced by Philippe Zdar, which brings it pretty damn close to the French Touch sound. And Zdar's recent-ish single, "Don't U Want."

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 2 June 2006 04:46 (nineteen years ago)

damn right im picky!
i love zdar, i cant tell whether i forgot or just didnt know he produced the cut copy album, which now makes me want to try it! i also havent heard this new single which makes me excited

karri (cruisy), Friday, 2 June 2006 05:01 (nineteen years ago)

i quite like this hystereo, 'deale' is good. only thing is that is using a v familiar vocab of those very pure braxe synth sounds. is there anything new out there that uses like, quenas or steel drums or glass flute, uh slap bass, koto, harpsichord, i dont know!!

karri miback (cruisy), Friday, 2 June 2006 05:16 (nineteen years ago)

fujiya & miyagi definitely not my thing, too indie (picky picky!)

karri miback (cruisy), Friday, 2 June 2006 05:20 (nineteen years ago)

oh zdar. why do dance producers put these horrible 'cool' vocals on their songs : ( i guess the french accent softens it a bit, it could be worse - i might get used to it. but whatever happened to romanthony?

karri miback (cruisy), Friday, 2 June 2006 05:33 (nineteen years ago)

Come on people.

Jacques Le Cont remixes!

karri miback (cruisy), Friday, 2 June 2006 06:07 (nineteen years ago)

Cut Copy seconded. There have been a few good mixes released in the shop over the last few years that do that chunky disco sound- DJ Kicks mixes by Annie, the Glimmers and Tiga are all fun & good.

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Friday, 2 June 2006 06:55 (nineteen years ago)

i just want to know what ppl are listening to who used to love discovery and have been let down ever since

-------------

very good question. it's not VITALIC that's for sure despite what all hands said when it came out. yeah braxe stuff on here is a go-er :

http://www.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=280;-1;-1;-1&sku=387967

pisces (piscesx), Friday, 2 June 2006 07:38 (nineteen years ago)

ah yes

Filtered house/disco (Reduxx)

pisces (piscesx), Friday, 2 June 2006 07:40 (nineteen years ago)

thanx for the links pisces and thanks everyone that answered the thread, i dont want to come off all spoilt - im just trying to get ppl to dig deeper! i would even buy that alan braxe thing if it had the britney remix on it
heres something else: filter disco is great but might be a red herring here

(there's even Daft Punk on it, and a few horrible indie vocals but it's decent. Probably not as decent as DP @ Coachella, but then I haven't heard that yet...)

fandango (fandango), Friday, 2 June 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

If you're looking for something that has vocals, I dare say that you might like Luomo.

i do!

karri miback (cruisy), Friday, 2 June 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

The Presets, another OZ band like Cut Copy, are excellent. Try to find the single "Girl & the Sea"

Brandon PPP Ivers (pussyctrl), Friday, 2 June 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

have you considered checking out George Duke, Edwin Birdsong, or any other artist sampled by Daft Punk?...(after all, DP's best song, "Digital Love", is basically a George Duke cover)...

"step not in the footsteps of the persons of old, but seek what they sought" - some guy

hank (hank s), Friday, 2 June 2006 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

Karri, here's a bunch of recent Jacques Le Cont remixes, hopefully you find them to have weird sounds and normal melodies ;)

Texas - What About Us (Jacques Le Cont Mix)
Royksopp - What Else Is There (Thin White Duke Mix)
Juliet - Avalon (Jacques Le Cont Mix)
Gwen Stefani - What You Waiting For (Jacques Lu Cont Remix)
Madonna - Hollywood (Thin White Duke Mix)
Madonna - Hung Up (SDP Extended Dub)

simian mobile disco.

grady (grady), Saturday, 3 June 2006 01:58 (nineteen years ago)

and, if by older Cornelius if you mean older than Point, Fantasma is excellent. Not 100% in the vein of DP, but some songs have the same energy and fun. Dont know the one before that.

grady (grady), Saturday, 3 June 2006 02:03 (nineteen years ago)

hey i found jacques lu cont remixes of 'get together' and 'sorry' too! are they just mislabled or is he really prolific & obsessed w madonna? i can believe theyre him, get together is ok - a bit subdued, it has a guitar & digital squelches, reminds me a bit of that moloko song about time with the spanish guitar, but not as good! i way prefer the original. i like the sorry remix a lot tho, its really fat, beefy layered vocoder, sounds like jlc for sure. other jlc remixes i accidentally found
killers - mr. brightside - i heard this song once during a high school formal and thought i might love it but then when i heard it on the radio the magic was gone. this remix sort of amplifies the pixie dust and its better than the original
coldplay - talk - yeah... nah.

He is quite prolific, and he also produced the latest Madonna album.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Saturday, 3 June 2006 23:33 (nineteen years ago)

Hung Up (SDP Extended Dub) is my fav mix of that song

Chris Bee (Cee Bee), Sunday, 4 June 2006 00:01 (nineteen years ago)

SDP co-wrote as well as producing the new Madonna, and he's been her live keyboardist/bandleader for years.

scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Sunday, 4 June 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

Capsule's new album, FRUITS CLiPPER, is highly recommended. There are significant references to each DP album, both in titles and music, and ultimately a kinda playful J-Pop Discovery mixed with elements of the other 2. And while I'm on that topic, I also recommend albums by Overrocket, Dr. Shingo, Motocompo and the remix discs from 8-bit act YMCK's two albums. As for Cut Copy, the I Thought Of Numbers EP is better - and more daft punky and less lo-fi indie - than the full length (which Zdar mixed, not produced).

and, if by older Cornelius if you mean older than Point, Fantasma is excellent. Not 100% in the vein of DP, but some songs have the same energy and fun. Dont know the one before that.

69/96 is mondo fantastic - 60s psych meets 70s & 80s metal meets 80s & 90s hip hop (thank you, Amazon). The remix album has a bosh-out mix by Takkyu Ishino, who is one of Japan's highest regarded techno artists and is therefore recommended.

Hal! Jordan! HAL! JORDAN! (Barima), Sunday, 4 June 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

kavinskys teddy boy ep is as 80's as it comes.

turtledoveDIES? (turtledoveDIES!), Sunday, 4 June 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

thank you barima, you sound like youre on the right track and i will try out these things you suggested!

karri miback (cruisy), Monday, 5 June 2006 04:11 (nineteen years ago)

im learning to live with the vocals on the zdar single btw, and the album is alright! the song 'rock n roll #1' is like working backwards from a french house track to hypothesise the song from which it was sampled, i guess like how madlib makes all those fake breaks songs. i think that french indie voice must be his own cos it just keeps showing up. hes still best when he really tries to sing and stops all that embarrassed deadpanning

karri miback (cruisy), Monday, 5 June 2006 04:31 (nineteen years ago)

is there anything new out there that uses like, quenas or steel drums or glass flute, uh slap bass, koto, harpsichord, i dont know!!

Well, not too recent, but Archigram's 'Padre' might at least have a harpsichord and it's in 3/4, I think. Not your average dancer. 'Carnaval' is totally killer - what Braxe and Falke keep narrowly falling short of, IMO.

Rex The Dog too. Sense of fun, sense of retro futurism, very funky at times. Overrocket got me into Beroshima, who remixed one of their singles. Despite the name, he's actually German and is like a less harsh and dark Vitalic in places. Denki Groove might fit the bill, although I know little about them - majorly prolific Japanese techno pop, may not still be together, were remixed by 3 of my favourite acts in the past (Cornelius, London Funk Allstars, Overrocket). You might like their forebears, Yellow Magic Orchestra, and seeing as you enjoyed Point, I think you may enjoy Max Tundra (see his thread here in the archives and also his remixes of Franz Ferdinand, Mint Royale and Paul McCartney) and The Aprils, a party band that comes on like a more techno Fantasma (ie. they go for bleepy boshno as much as they go for indie jams and hip hop, sometimes all at once).

Hal! Jordan! HAL! JORDAN! (Barima), Monday, 5 June 2006 07:07 (nineteen years ago)

im learning to live with the vocals on the zdar single btw, and the album is alright!

waitwaitwait. Are you talking about one of the older Cassius LPs or is there a new Zdar album to go along with "Don't U Want"? Because if it is the latter I am about to explode with joy.

(Kavinsky seconded, and he's got a new EP coming out in a couple weeks or so)

Telephonething (Telephonething), Monday, 5 June 2006 07:30 (nineteen years ago)
