this is even more hypnotizingly monotonous than the typical old-school track and i love it

T/S: "Top Billin'" Vs. Any Other Song From 1987.

Um. It wins.

The Ego trip book sez the Auds were cooking up an "Impeach The President" loop, which got fucked up and looped wrong... and they kept it!

And actually it's LESS monotonous than any other old-school track because there's three totally seprerated phrases that make up the drum loop, and they all land under Milk's verses (divisible by four, natch) in different ways because he's rapping 4-bar phrases over a repeating 3-bar phrase.

even with that rhythmic variation at a micro-level, it seems like those three phrases are repeated without variation throughout the song, and unless you except the longer acapella part around 2 mins in, there really isn't a break in that basic arrangement. also the actual raps aren't particularly varied in their tone/attack. so while it has a certain basic rhythmic variety that some other old school cuts don't, it doesn't develop much. i still really like it.

There is an absolutely jaw-droppingly awesome remix of this song by DJ Twyst (me neither). THAT is the best song of 1987.

as mike daddino said on the earlier "top billin'" thread, what really stands out is how milk doesn't vary his (very whiny) pitch at all (until the very LAST verse). almost 20 years later, it almost sounds like a parody of the alleged monotone delivery of NYC old school -- yet i am sure that parody was furthest from their minds, that they just liked how it sounded.

Much of that Top Billin video seems like it's poached/repurposed from footage for the "I Don't Care" video, which I remember seeing ca. 1988

I wonder if they thought "I Don't Care" was gonna be the hit and had to backtrack?
