YOU step into the batters box at Yankee Stadium; what song is blasting over the PA?

...or any stadium, for that matter...

too many ballers revert to cliches...("In Da Club"?...meh..."Gasolina"?...please)

now if I were in the bigs, I'd choose something like "Firestarter"...it's recognizable enough to get the crowd roaring, and it'd be especially appropriate during a late-inning rally, when the other team's "fireman" is on the hill...

of the current crop of ball players, only Hideki Matsui has an inspired choice: "Godzilla", by Blue Oyster Cult...

what would be YOUR hitting soundtrack?

it'd be SHEA STADIUM and the song would be "Delivering the Groceries at 138 Beats Per Minute" by Don Cabellero.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 15 June 2006 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

also matsui, out for the rest of the season most likely, appears to "day tripper" by the beatles a lot.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 15 June 2006 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

"O Fortuna" if I were a slugger.

Steve Miller's "The Joker" if I were a weak-hitting middle infield beloved by the fans.

max (maxreax), Thursday, 15 June 2006 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

somewhat unrelated: i went to an orioles v. red sox game last month at camden yards, and two of the songs they played in between innings were bauhaus' "bela lugosi's dead" and the pixies "here comes your man". struck me as strange.

if i am allowed to play for the red sox, the song coming over the fenway park loudspeakers would either be "bombs over baghdad" or, um, "lawyers, guns and money". or "crazy train". i dunno. "rudie can't fail"?

Sidenote--I always loved Paul O'Neill when he was playing for his unabashed white-dude-into-classic-rock-ness; his first at-bat was always "Baba O'Riley," his second "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out"--both, probably not coincidentally, favorite songs of mine back in middle/high school when he was still playing.

Cassetteboy's "Fly Me To New York"

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 15 June 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

It's a couple years old, buthere's a list of player entrance music by team.

max (maxreax), Thursday, 15 June 2006 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

Or, if I was coming off the D.L., "PSA" from the Black Album ("Allow me to reintroduce myself").

Sub-question: you're a closer coming into to pitch the ninth in a one-run game. What music is playing (please, no "Sandman.")?

max (maxreax), Thursday, 15 June 2006 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

"Resolution" by John Coltrane, starting at 20 seconds in.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 15 June 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

Ascension by John Coltrane, starting at the beginning and I'd walk real slow.

RHP Brad Penny: "Voodoo Child" / Jimi Hendrix

Info from the Florida Marlins: A young pitcher, Brad claims he is "Old School." His musical selection symbolizes such a characterization.

Is there a women's league? If so pretty much any version of Venus, preferably the live one by Tom Jones. (Ok, definitely not the Bananarama one.)

Slayer's "Raining Blood" would scare the shit out of the pitcher.

What event at the Stadium causes them to play "Black Betty" anyway?

Uri Frendimein (Uri Frendimein), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

The Damned, "New Rose".
Black Tambourine, "For Ex-Lovers Only".
The Clean, "Tally Ho".
Elvis Costello, "The Imposter".

But I'd probably change this way too frequently, and occasionally put in something incongruous -- say, the Softies, or something.

Now, if I were a relief pitcher, definitely "Caribou" by the Pixies. With the batters, it's all about the opening bars, but relief pitchers have enough time to get to the chorus.

Pessimist (Pessimist), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

"last caress" by the misfits, easy.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Thursday, 15 June 2006 23:09 (nineteen years ago)

i've thought about this quite a bit for my son.

when he plays for the Yankees he will mix it up a little, clips of Manuel Göttsching's "E2-E4", opening chords of The Mekons "Where Were You?", and excerpts of Pepe Braddock's "Deep Burnt" and Can's "Vitamin C".

after he pisses off Steinbrenner and is exiled to the Mets, he will rotate between Mr. Fingers' "Can U Feel It" (when they are down a few runs) and more upbeat Todd Terry stuff for when they're winning.

of course, it's up to him.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Thursday, 15 June 2006 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

and if you don't think that makes me sound like enough of a stage dad, the other night wifey asked if I thought he'd ever play baseball.

i thought she meant professionally, she meant Little League.

Given my hitting abilities, I'd have to represent my fondest semi-realistic hopes with Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons' "Walk Like a Man."
