so i guess what i'm looking for is folk guitars ( jansch, davy graham, fingerpicky stuff) with strong syncopated/funk/groove bass... any ideas?

Maybe Terry Callier's 70s stuff would do? But they're more on the soul/jazz side of things. Often very folky though.

danjel (danjel), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

good call, though I would say that Terry Callier's recent stuff seems more in line with the thread description...

It's not that "fingerpicky" (more like singer-songwritery) but Folk Is Not a Four-Letter Word is a great compilation

donovan + jeff beck group

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

John Martyn maybe?

Robin Goad (rgoad), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

not fingerpicky, but Eugene McDaniels

Surprisingly hard to think of examples with fingerpicky guitar (as opposed to hard, rhythmic strumming, usually capoed up).

Old: Hot Tuna, maybe? The first, live album? And Pentangle doing bluesy stuff ("Way Behind The Sun")? Taj Mahal must have done it, but I can't think of a specific track.

Medium: Luka Bloom doing "I Need Love". Rickie Lee Jones' "Flying Cowboys".

New: Doesn't Nickel Creek do this? And Olu Dara sometimes (in an Afropop-y way)? North Mississippi Allstars doing "KC Jones".

that gary higgins album is kinda funky in its way

T. Rex. Well, kinda.

NECESSARY: FUNKADELIC "CAN YOU GET TO THAT"

mummy wrapped in bacon (nickalicious), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

Far less necessary is that Leo Keottke/Mike Gordon duo record.

Pentangle OTM- Danny's bass playing is so tight. The reissue of the first album has an instrumental mix of "way behind the sun" that sounds like just the ticket.

It's not fingerpicky, but the new Brightblack Morning LIght is incredibly funky in a Dr. John "Night Tripper" way, and it is folky (volkish?) in its politics/aesthetics. It's also just a really good album.

John Martyn maybe?
-- Robin Goad (rgoa...), June 20th, 2006.

this is a good pick...One World totally fits the bill, especially "Big Muff"...

hank (hank s), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

thanks all, lots of diverse stuff to check.

Drew : pretty OTMwith Pentangle but I know and love 'em already. in fact, it was Train Song off Basket of Light that got me thinking , "wonder if there's anything like this but heavier... and funkier... "

winter testing (winter testing), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

if you can find this record, it's standard 70s singer songwriter folk except on one song (Do What You Love) which is just a fucking funk stormer. sounds like it could be an old dusty 45

jäxøñ (jaxon), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

jäxøñ (jaxon), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

i also started this thread when i first got the FINAFLW comp

Soulful Folk / Folky Soul

jäxøñ (jaxon), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

def. Eugene McDaniels and Gil Scot-Heron, among others - tho I can't say I listen to either for the fingerpicking...?

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

when i read this, the first thing that came to mid was Bill Withers, as so much of his soulful funk had a very folky gospel, even "countrified" feel to it.

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

Even the Prog is Not a Four Letter Word is really folky & funky in parts.
