The hip-hop lyrical mysteries/ambiguities solved thread

In honor of the R.E.S.P.E.C.T. thread ("R-E-S-P-E-C-T take out T-C-P")

This is the thread where you post a hip-hop lyric that's daunted you for years, whether because of unfamiliar slang, a reference you don't understand, a mumbled lyric or just general ambiguity.

First person to roll their eyes and play Dismaster General when someone doesn't know their favorite piece of arcane slang ("OMG you didn't know what whoadie meant, lolz tard!") gets the cyber-gas face

1. De La Soul - "Me Myself And I"

"But that glory's been denied By concensing dookie eyes"

This is what ohhla.com lists the lyric as. I always thought it was "gookie eyes" like G Rap when he talks about having "chinky eyes." Is this the right lyric? What does "conscensing" mean? What are "dookie eyes"?

2. Beastie Boys - "Hold It Now, Hit It"

"Surgeon general cut professor - D.J. Thigs"

What the fuck does this mean?

"But that glory's been denied By concensing dookie eyes"

i remember Smash Hits printing it as 'gooky eyes'

TS - Phife's last line on "Hot Sex" or Greg Nice's second line on "DWYCK"?

For the longest time, when RZA says "tapes we dub" in "Windpipe" I thought he was saying "Tates Creek dub" and shouting out my high school. Oh, the disappointment.

Yeah, that's what I thought - his cuts are precise! As in cuttin' & scratchin'.

My top baffler is from EMPD's "Strictly Business" - spent a lot of time rewinding and playbacking in the 80s and 90s trying to decipher this:

Like the E-Double - or the Pee-MD
He drives a Corvette, I drive a SEMAROSSAGEESEE

A what? ohla says "Samaurai Suzuki".

I love mushmouth Erick Sermon.

I was more confused over the existence of a "DJ Thigs." Wasn't Dr. Dre their DJ at that point?

What's a Cuban Link?

No Bones In Ice Cream (whineyg), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

A cigar, no?

Edward III (edward iii), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I'll correct myself. Cuban link appears to be a form of jewelry....

Now, why do you think they call it jewelry?

the last few lines of ghostface's verse on hells wind staff (off wu tang forever) are outrageously confusing, and thats even after i read what they were, with explanation,in the wu tang manual

a Samurai Suzuki is a jeep, they were popular in the late 80s, but they were pretty cheesy cars. Its kind of a laugh to say that a Suzuki is more, uh, fly or whatever than a Corvette (the Corvette would def. be more expensive, for one thing)

six years pass...

in ref to my first post:

Rap Genius says "conscensing dookie eyes" are "haters"

Still no explanation for the elusive DJ Thigs

wu-tang can be like beat poetry, obv. my friend was saying that wu-tang's existence pretty much negates the necessity for Rap Genius because some Ghost shit is just unexplainable

Yeah, agreed - it's more scattershot imagery, feel versus narrative or description as such.
