The Essential Dance Tracks of the 00's

I'm planning to make a blog post of 25 favorite dance tracks. But I'm afraid that that list would be filled with indie artists like LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, or already known artists like Daft Punk, Isolee. So could you recommend me some lesser known but essential dance tracks to download. Thanks.

P.S. I already own the Kompakt 6 compilation.

ukg = UK Garage incorporating 2 step, grime etc. Jaimeson's 'True' would fit into this category but it's VERY pop. search ILM for older threads if you want to include this kind of thing.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 09:14 (eighteen years ago)

omg i forgot 'what else is there?'!!!!!! never mind tim picked it up. tim, have you heard the jurgen paape track on total7? it's called 'take that' and it is super-awesome.

nobody mention "emerge"? too hipster, eh?

Aditya (dan138zig), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 09:52 (eighteen years ago)

haha i generally thought 'emerge' was so long ago that it didn't count. but it isn't and it does, and while you're at it there's kylie minogue's 'come into my world' (fischerspooner rmx)

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 09:53 (eighteen years ago)

Bangalter and Falcon-So Much Love To Give

How quickly we forget :(

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

haha i generally thought 'emerge' was so long ago that it didn't count.

Dude, SANDSTORM counts!

It's been a long decade, hasn't it?

I am faintly terrified by how many of these I know virtually every second of.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 09:57 (eighteen years ago)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 09:57 (eighteen years ago)

WRONG

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:07 (eighteen years ago)

"... to the extent I imagine this is less than useless to the original thread-starter."

hahaha, so true. so i will change the topic: Dance Tracks of the 00's for IDIOTS.

Aditya (dan138zig), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:11 (eighteen years ago)

it's funny cos there will be people who are DEEPLY into dance music (FUNKY HOUSE!) out there who won't know about all this hipstery electro type stuff.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:12 (eighteen years ago)

i would not call much of this stuff particularly hipstery? i guess 'hipster' could apply to any scene you want it to but it's hardly a bastion of impenetrable exclusivity

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 10:17 (eighteen years ago)

I hate myself for not mentioning Crydamoure in this thread.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 4 August 2006 07:15 (eighteen years ago)

right, so, did i COMPLETELY IMAGINE a thread about the trentemoller album the other day? i have it, and it's good, but i can't find the thread!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 4 August 2006 09:06 (eighteen years ago)

person in my office, just now: 'what's the difference between dance and house?'

knows what garage sounds like, knows who bob sinclar is, knows who armand van helden is.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Friday, 4 August 2006 10:27 (eighteen years ago)

Yes that proves your point totally. If only my finger was as on the pulse of popular culture and popular opinion.

Lex - the Trentemoller thread is here - it's the funny O that's screwed your search for you.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 4 August 2006 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

it doesn't prove my point at all!

i'm just saying.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Friday, 4 August 2006 10:51 (eighteen years ago)

i mean, to really get my finger on the pulse of etc, i'd have to take more bus rides in east london.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Friday, 4 August 2006 10:52 (eighteen years ago)

You could stand listening to the music in Wetherspoon's pubs as well.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 4 August 2006 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

i searched with the funny o!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 4 August 2006 11:00 (eighteen years ago)

ie, it's not my fault, the ilx search function is crap

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 4 August 2006 11:00 (eighteen years ago)

haha i love ellen allien:

Is electro for boring bearded blokes in anoraks?

Electro can be annoying when it's cheap, but there are incredible breaks and electro tunes. When a track is innovative and tight without being cheesy, then it can kick on the dance floor. Girls love it! And women are extremely important on a dance floor. Sexy girls I need!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 4 August 2006 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

Many xposts - The racks in a mainstream record store (say HMV Oxford Street) seem to me to be a good way of seeing what dance music is popular. (More revealing than a specialist shop?) And there are still acres of undifferentiated 'House' then a small Electro section, then a growing Leftfield section (all three of which may contain electro-house). Usually a lot of Urban/R&B - where grime/ukg tends to end up and a small d&b bit. Techno still seems to have disapeared as a label. No sign of MINIMAL at all. Which is all a bit weird, innit?

So some 'house' house 00s TUNES! anyway.

DJ Sneak 'Fix My Sink!'
Tim Deluxe 'Just Won't Do'
Derrick Carter 'Where U At'

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Friday, 4 August 2006 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

that's what i'm talking about, jamie. i'm not trying to 'make points' per mdc, but figure why/how ukg is now apparently quite widely seen as 'urban/rnb'. these sorts of mutation are interesting! i think so anyway.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Friday, 4 August 2006 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

everything on crydamoure from CRYDA011 "the wrath of zeus" to CRYDA018 "give me the love i want" is essential

does that le knight club song that goes "i'll be here for you/love was meant for two" fall under this blanket and if so what is this track's name?? it's been bugging me for, um, minutes now

joseph (joseph), Friday, 4 August 2006 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

xpost - where's that quote from?

fandango (fandango), Friday, 4 August 2006 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

it's from a time out mini-interview i found on lexis when i searched for "ellen allien" instead of whatever i was on there for. i just love "sexy girls i need!"

May 17, 2006

Nightlife - Previews - Ellen Allien

SECTION: Pg. 119

LENGTH: 441 words

Bugged Out, at the End, Saturday

Since championing the early techno sound in her home town of Berlin in the early '90s, Ellen Allien has pushed the electronic scene forward with the determination of a hyperactive person obsessed. Her own production (check her essential 'Orchestra of Bubbles', a recent collaborative long player with Apparat; we're caning 'Retina' in the office) flits between melancholic electronic folk and hard-edged dancefloor business, while her record label, B*Pitch Control, is simply one of the finest around. As for her DJ sets, well, might we suggest you rock on down to the Bugged Out hop to find out for youself?

Your label has boasted some of the biggest records over the past year or so. Do you feel pressure to constantly find the new 'Washing Up' by Tomas Andersson?

It shows me that a good track finds its way, no matter what. Thanks to Tiga for the remix! A label needs a track like this in order to survive. And it was nice to hear the track at festivals and see people singing along, recognising it - that's what makes a hit. This connects people, it's fun and has a lot of positive energy.

How do you find running your own label?

The team is great, so it's not a lot of work for me any more. It was hard to build the label, to find the right people. But now the basis is there. You have to have good people to work with, if not, it's really stressful.

Do you drop a lot of your own music in your sets?

Yeah, I play a lot of B*Pitch releases ... because I am a true fan of our music!

What's best about Berlin's scene?

Its diversity and development, its change. Everything is moving. Everybody is moving, too. People who come here push things forward. Art is big here. Berlin lets you breathe and is still affordable for artists. There isn't a lot of money here, but a lot of vibe and energy and ideas.

Does minimal house put you to sleep?

No, just boring minimal. Then I really have to go home. I love hypnotic minimal though. When it's trippy, groovy ... Then I cannot stop dancing.

They say Germans don't have a sense of humour. Tell us a joke.

The British humour is so much better indeed. When I hang out with Brits, it's always fun. There is definitely German humour as well, it's just kind of hard to understand. It's very dry, but funny.

Describe your DJ sets.

Hypnotic dance.

Interview: Simone Baird.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 4 August 2006 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

thanks!! :)

fandango (fandango), Friday, 4 August 2006 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

HMV may not label stuff "minimal" but they have had massive backstock of Crosstown Rebels and Get Physical and big supporting promotions (ie bigger than any record shop would ever have, entire back catalogue big) for those two labels in the last year, all through Britain and Ireland.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 August 2006 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

ie, it's not my fault, the ilx search function is crap
-- The Lex (alex.macpherso...), August 4th, 2006. (The Lex)

I've noticed that posts from the last couple of weeks are unsearchable. I don't know if this is a recent development or if it's normally the case.

aaron d.g. (aaron d.g.), Friday, 4 August 2006 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

"but figure why/how ukg is now apparently quite widely seen as 'urban/rnb'. these sorts of mutation are interesting! i think so anyway."

A couple of reasons I think:

1) the fact that there were quite a few artists who were switching between UKG and R&B - not just Mis-Teeq, but Artful Dodger etc. Actually there are artists who've switched between UKG and house (MJ Cole obv, and a lot of producers like Grant Nelson have now gone back to making house entirely) but these tended to be the more unknown 'scene' producers - i.e. the exact people your other posts imply are less important to people's understanding of dance music.

2) grime was so obviously hip hop-aligned that it has retrospectively made the whole post-speed garage narrative seem more urban-based.

3) 2-step is just so easily co-opted into an R&B context - would we consider Usher's "You've Got It Bad" or Jem's "They" to be "dance music" over R&B?

Having said all the above, I do think it's wrong to over-emphasise the "urban"-ness of UKG - precisely because I don't think you can ignore the way this music was treated by people actually into the music as a scene (i.e. going out to clubs), as opposed to the hypothetical kids on the bus or Sharons & Traceys at Wetherspoons Pubs (sounds like the equivalent of the pubs in The Rock in Sydney). Despite the prominence of vocals, the majority of 2-step tracks weren't actually deathless chartbound pop songs set to the catapult their singers into successful R&B careers, but functional dance tracks designed to be played in the mix (ha ha you coould probably argue the same about R&B sets though I guess!)..

For me, leaving UKG out of this thread is entirely practical: my top 25 list for UKG would be as near and dear to my heart as my top 25 list of all house/techno, if not more so. I'd be here all day - and that list has been made countless times in other threads anyway.

"Does minimal house put you to sleep?

No, just boring minimal. Then I really have to go home. I love hypnotic minimal though. When it's trippy, groovy ... Then I cannot stop dancing."

Ha ha, I totally understand this distinction, it gets it spot on!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 4 August 2006 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

danski (danski), Saturday, 5 August 2006 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, Aditya, don't take this the wrong way... but why don't YOU choose your favorite dance tracks. If the blog post is supposed to be YOUR favorites, then it would make most sense if you just made the mix or collection and THEN asked us what we thought. But perhaps I am being too rough on you-- I understand the desire for input.

trees (treesessplode), Saturday, 5 August 2006 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

No, it's not like that. My last post didn't have any corellation with the thread. I only wanna know if those compilations worth buying or not, because I don't want to waste my money for 3 discs of junk. I only know 1 or 2 artists from those comps so I don't know what to expect. Do they sound like The Streets?

Aditya (dan138zig), Saturday, 5 August 2006 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

It depends: the beats often sound like the beats on the 1st Streets album, but otherwise most everything is different. Imagine "Has It Come To This" with a bigger bassline and female diva singing and the occasional hype MC chanting stuff over the type.

Both mixes look like decent overviews w/o being knock-out winners.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 5 August 2006 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

Sambuca - Wideboys

This song is so due an ironic revival.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 5 August 2006 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

"pure garage platinum" has about 5 good tracks per disc.

"pure garage classics" has about 10 good tracks per disc on discs 1 and 2, but disc 3 is straight garbage (well, except for dizzee ... and jon e cash ...)

buyer beware!!

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Saturday, 5 August 2006 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah that was my assessment- the first two discs of Pure Garage Classics is a better 2-step summary but the third disc is pretty poor.

from Wiki: Often, a person will post a sincere message about which he is emotionally sensitive. Skillful trolls know that an easy way to upset the person is to falsely claim that they are a "troll." In forums where most users are similar to each other, outsiders may be perceived as trolls simply because they do not fit into the social norms of that group. It can sometimes be difficult to distinguish between a user who merely has different values, views, or ideas, and a user who is intentionally trolling. This can lead to genuinely hostile behavior, including flame wars.

No, but that looks ace, is that new?

Aditya The Sound of the Pirates comps Jess is referring to were released on Locked On in 2000 and 2001 respectively - first one mixed by Zed Bias and the second one mixed by Ed Case. The Zed Bias mix is probably the best single-disc garage mix ever.
