Johnny Marr's newest band...Modest Mouse?

Apparently Marr joined them on their new record and he is going to be in the touring lineup.

Also the new record is supposed to be called "We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank". Very Liars-esque.

Sounds pretty fricking great to me. Why not freshen up with
a new vocalist (I don't know much about how the band works,
if the singer also writes the songs, let him stay but make
him shut up and pass the mic).

Not implausible. Not like Johnny Marr + Modest Mouse. Oh God, you know what this means, right? MORRISSEY WILL ACTUALLY JOIN THE KILLERS. Could you handle that many lightbulbs?

el juan (el juan), Friday, 5 January 2007 07:30 (eighteen years ago)

four months pass...
I can't find a thread specifically dedicated to the album We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank but I'm finally listening to it for the first time right now and it's really enjoyable. Not at all what I'd expected from "Dashboard" or from the hints left by the previous LP - it continues the trend towards thickening their sound and Isaac Brock is doing even more funny voices and crazy man cackles but what's shocking is how steadily it rocks along, not a "Blame It On The Tetons" or Tom Waits ramshackle shanty in sight. Nice how some of the rockers really push the "Bury Me With It" direction but they still have things like "Fire It Up" which could have, with a more lo-fi recording, have slid onto Lonesome Crowded West. This is pretty good stuff.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 02:15 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Continuing my attempt to turn ILM into Doctor Casino's special Modest Mouse blog, I'd like to add that I'm continuing to enjoy this record. There are definitely some duller songs that pretty much mine their one trick throughout their running time ("We've Got Everything" is pretty weak), but the highs are as high or higher than anything on the previous record, and it turns out the whole album would be worth it just for "Missed The Boat," which is as much of an instant classic as you could ever expect out of a career indie rock band in 2007. Beats "Float On" to pieces and might just be better than "Ocean Breathes Salty."

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

I absolutely adore the new album, esp the WGE/FTIAJ/MTB middle. You and I are the only fans! I'd gush more but my arm is broken and typing is sooooooo hard.

Finefinemusic, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

fourteen years pass...

Apparently Johnny's back working with the band. He's spoken highly about his past work with them, so it's not a huge surprise. I always loved what he brought to We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. I don't get the feeling it's a favorite among fans even though it topped the charts, but it's still my favorite album from them.
