ILM may be closing; perhaps you can help?

Please read thread.

Rather than getting all chicken little or volunteering ten dollars a month, the most useful thing you could do now (if you have the skillbase) is offer Pashmina help with the coding. Any of you ILMers 133t enough to take it on?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

Waht is it coded of?

I can do SQL stuff. I don't know MySQL but I could learn.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

Lets keep this thread at the top so everyone sees it.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

dude, this place is chocka-block with nerds, right?

gbx (skowly), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

We only know how to press the button on the iPod.

tiit (tiit), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

Overly liberal with that "we" there, Ned.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

Precisely what is the mooted solution, in a couple of sentences?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

Overly liberal with that "we" there, Ned

So I've been accused. ;-)

Solution -- Pashmina, bless him, has offered to oversee neo-ILX. This said, we'd need coding help -- we're strongly considering making the current site an archive and creating better coding with the same basic template for the new site -- and quite likely donations as we go.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

And someone(s) to drum up, collect, and allocate the donations.

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

I nominate myself and my Swiss bank account.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Ned, you should send your dad over there in his submarine to blow their ass up if they close it down.

IPSISSIMUS (Uri Frendimein), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

It's a bit difficult to get it out of his garage these days.

Major Alfonso (Major Alfonso), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

Well I am an [ex-]Computer Science major (thank you calc 151) and have a decent knowledge of C/C++, Java, and the Linux operating system. SO....

Unfortunately MySQL was never my forte, but I've found such a refuge in this site taht I'd be willing to offer my (ahem) services any way I can; sadly I doubt Java or C[++] will come in any handy.

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

So, you just took this opportunity to brag, is that it?

IPSISSIMUS (Uri Frendimein), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

Hooray!

(Christiane -- thanks, you might want to post that on the ILE thread, as that'll be ground central for further discussion.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

I can't tell if that was a constructive "you should see if we can use that" or a sarcastic "why don't you post that on ILE so we can all yell at you"

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

(site is currently running on php, mysql and voodoo btw)

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

Yeaaaaaaahhhh I don't think I'd be of much help :-(

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

Constructive, constructive! Very constructive! :-) I realize you're thinking your skills might not be what is needed but having folks on hand who are willing to help and know computers is very important regardless. If nothing else, you can think of it as an opportunity to learn!

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

I've got well over $19 in my piggy bank if that'll help.

M. Agony Von Bontee (M. Agony Von Bontee), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

I'd be happy to donate, and host some sort of doohickey on my little site if that would help. Just lemme knows.

Eric Harvey (eric marathonpacks), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

To repeat again, best to post any offers to help over on the linked thread -- keeps everything in one place! Consider this thread as a general notice for the ILM world.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

Man, I pop out for 2 weeks...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

it's v. sad comparing this thread to the ILE thread about the same thing :(

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 22:11 (nineteen years ago)

Well, considering most people reading it probably went over to the ILE thread, if you see what I mean... (Also, a number of people contacted me privately about this after seeing this particular thread, so there ya go.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 22:13 (nineteen years ago)

Ned is the recording secretary of the ILX Illuminati.

Whitman Mayonnaise (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 22:30 (nineteen years ago)

The pay is kinda flaky.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

The other thread was about 200 answers strong when this was started incase some people on ilm don't read ile.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

maybe it's better - no investment, no disappointment, just shuffle off i suppose

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe the music-discussing community is equally well served elsewhere on the internet than the general-stuff-and-nonsense-discussing community, so the disappearance of here doesn't matter so much?

(this is just my opinion as someone who would miss ILE more than ILM, btw)

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 22:38 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe theres good specialist sites for genres of music, but this is by far the best general site. Plus it has the specialist types for each genre too. Its a great place to learn about music or share knowledge of what you know.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

finishing the 80s poll will be down to the wire

andrew s (andrew s), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

The music discussing elsewhere on the internet sucks except for one or two v. specifically focussed sites.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 10 August 2006 07:48 (nineteen years ago)

and yet people slag off ILM constantly. maybe the problem is THE MUSIC.

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 10 August 2006 09:12 (nineteen years ago)

y'all too predictable

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 10 August 2006 09:13 (nineteen years ago)

It hasn't been vintage lately but if there was somewhere better people would go, wouldn't they. Maybe people are keeping these places secret from me. :(

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 10 August 2006 09:22 (nineteen years ago)

not keen on dissensus then?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 10 August 2006 09:23 (nineteen years ago)

I have posted there but it may as well be called consensus = everybody just agrees with Woebot and K-Punk. And everyone is a Lex, hating indie bands that they've never heard and can't even caricature correctly. (And their ardcore continuum bollocks is just as regressive now as any 'boys w/gtrs' are.)

(xpost)

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 10 August 2006 09:39 (nineteen years ago)

I like djhistory but it's kinda specialised.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 10 August 2006 09:40 (nineteen years ago)

I can make teh Logo turtel do various rectangles, is that OK?

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 10 August 2006 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

No more poxy fules?
(I've heard that Sound Opinion is good, but haven't checked it out. I like ILM leagues more than ILE, but I've never figured out the Noize Board)

js (honestengine), Thursday, 10 August 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

ilm, don't go.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 10 August 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

where else am i supposed to dig up the Old Faithful of internet DMB bashery that is the 'DMB-Why do they suck+so hated' thread??!

or or...'the rolling psyche youtube' thread?!!!

or hear about new/old psyche+remixes+trivial facts+etc etc???!

c'mon!
don't die, ILM...

edde (edde), Thursday, 10 August 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

Check the linked thread, duders. Plenty of good talk going on about what happens next.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 August 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

Sound Opinion sucks, the only other good one is Obner, IMO. ILM has to live on because there really is no other place like it. I have been on this board for about a year and a half but have only been to ILE twice, I should check it out.

BeeOK (boo radley), Thursday, 10 August 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

oh, there IS good talk!!!!
ned, you so helpful...

edde (edde), Thursday, 10 August 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

Some more specific links:

DONATE now to SAVE ILX! (Keep bumping this thread pls) -- a number of people have contacted me privately asking about donations. This thread has the information about how to do this.

PHP/SQL Geeks Click Here For Fun N' Games -- for anyone with the appropriate coding experience who is willing to help contribute. Further coding development and discussion will be taking place over at this Google Code site, which is overseen by TOMBOT. You will need to post on the ILE thread asking to join the Google Code team.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 August 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

(Ah, I see the ILE thread on donations has been replicated here:

DONATE now to SAVE ILM

Both have the same key info pointing offsite.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 August 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

paging RJG

heavyweight grebt (sanskrit), Thursday, 10 August 2006 23:09 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, he's around.

Fundraising completed in 11 hours! Thanks everyone -- at this point we can all pretty much relax, as we're covered on money, a new coding team is coming together rapidly, and Pash will be the new chief admin for the site. There will be more as server switching and the like takes place, but otherwise we're all fine, and thanks again to everyone who contacted me privately offering help, it was all very much appreciated.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 August 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

YAY!!!
*high fives and ass slapping all around!*
"good game"

edde (edde), Friday, 11 August 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

So do we need more money or is it all good I take it?

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Friday, 11 August 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

For now all is good, thanks. If more money is needed further announcements will come down the pike but we are fine for the foreseeable future.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 August 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

Oh and to the poster above on about Dissensus: it IS the Anti-ILM, (for both good and ill, this place kills for acerbic wit alone) but intriguingly K-punk has fucked off now as he was pissed of with too much comfortable middle aged dope smoking dad-backslapping agreement, so make of that what you will haha...

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Friday, 11 August 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)
