Velvet Underground - Live At Max's Kansas City (reissue)

I can't find a thread for this. And I can't find a picture to post here, either, fuck it.

I'm late to the party, I admit. In the days a few years back when I was a real VU fiend, I didn't realize there was an album called Live at Max's Kansas City. It didn't seem to be available. Then there was a reissue, which I read about in a review in a magazine when it came out ('04?) but there was something else distracting me from giving it my full attention at the time. I kindof filed it away under "eventually I'll get that". I guess I thought it could only be as good as the Quine Tapes CD, but I was wrong. This is an unequivocally landmark, milestone Velvet Underground moment captured on tape.

Highlights:

"White Light White Heat" (transcendent, the meaning of rock and roll, this version, heavy competition with the Stooges now)

"I'm Waiting For My Man" (yeah you thought you'd heard all interesting versions of this already, you are wrong)

"I'll Be Your Mirror" (particularly it is this second CD when Lou brings Nico-era tracks back to the set, surprising the band, and SINGS MOST OF THEM HIMSELF that kills me. I mean I love Nico but holy shit. And the probability is there that while this was happening Lou did know he was leaving the band, adding to the poignance)

Aphrodisiac Salad Lunch (Bimble...), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

You can almost hear Devo quivering in their not-yet-existent boots when White Light White Heat gets going.

Modest Is The Pencil (Bimble...), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

Fuck the Velvet Underground.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

oh scandalous

Alicia Titsovich (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

Search ebay for the promo CD set, it has more tracks on it bimble...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

Seek love on you, Mr. Grout. I did expect a backlash, it's hardly surprising. Rebel cunts! Rebel against the mighty force of VU! GO AHEAD! But make sure you don't end up sucking Green Day's dick or something. The devil plays a terrible video game.

Armadillo Rhinocerous (Bimble...), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

I like Max's (I think I'd like anything with Sterling Morrison playing guitar on it) but my goodness, Billy Yule is not the right drummer for the Velvet Underground. On the rockier stuff he's ok, but he seems to have no idea how to play drums on the slower stuff. It certainly is crazy to hear how much Lou Reed was taking a backseat to Doug Yule here, too. If you had no idea who the band was, you might think it was Dougie who was in charge.
Are the extra trax on the promo CD any good? What are they--rehearsals or something?

Tyler W (tylerw), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

Tyler OTM - Doug's constant, maddening, poorly conceived drum fills ruin this record for me. My least favorite VU album (haven't heard Squeeze).

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 22:26 (nineteen years ago)

I mean Billy.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

there was a thread in fact-

Is the "new" Velvet Underground live CD (in Kansas City I think) a good CD?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 10 August 2006 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

The best thing about that album is the dialogue between the stoners. I wish there was a full transcription somewhere.

Jim M (jmcgaw), Thursday, 10 August 2006 11:26 (nineteen years ago)

what, the clinking of glasses and 'hey, man...i wanna slow gin fizzy' sorta stuff?

i dunno, i like the Quine tapes more just because of the Sister Ray/Searchin stuff and Follow the Leader.
but, it's nice as a document to the end of the band.

edde (edde), Thursday, 10 August 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

Wasn't Jim Carroll one of the more prominent voices?

Jim M (jmcgaw), Thursday, 10 August 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

Stoners = Jim Carroll and Brigid Polk. "I wanna double Pernod!" Dork.

And Billy Yule is the highlight of the disc for me. Listen to him get loose on "Beginning to See the Light." He's a madman.

Dan Heilman (The Deacon), Thursday, 10 August 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

Billy Yule is the quintessential teenage drummer who has to throw in a fill at every possible moment

shookout (shookout), Thursday, 10 August 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

If you had no idea who the band was, you might think it was Dougie who was in charge.

bowie thought so. he saw the post-lou vu in nyc and struck up a conversation with doug assuming he was lou (he'd never seen any of them in person yet).

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Thursday, 10 August 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

poor Doug. I always feel so sorry for him.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 10 August 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

The best thing about that album is the dialogue between the stoners. I wish there was a full transcription somewhere.

How is the sound quality of those drug deal transactions on this release anyway? Was this release given the quadrophonic treatment? Will I be able to hear street corner locations and slang with the fidelity I've been waiting for and craving?

dottie nuttie dach nach dtnt hhhhhhhh (donut), Thursday, 10 August 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

six years pass...

Anybody who does DIME grab these? only 30 second samples sadly. i've heard two of these and they're definitely better quality than the official max's.

The Joseph Freeman tape

Joseph Freeman: "I recorded an entire set at Max's (around the same time as Polk's). The tape was recorded on a Sony TCS-124 a portable stereo cassette recorder with an external single stereo mic. The quality of the tape is very good and has never been bootlegged. I may be interested in having this tape surface as a legitimate release".

01 I'm Waiting For The Man
02 White Light/White Heat
03 I'm Set Free
04 Lonesome Cowboy Bill
05 Who Loves The Sun
06 Sweet Jane
07 New Age
08 unidentified bluesy instrumental
09 It's Just Too Much
10 Ocean
11 I'll Be Your Mirror
12 What Goes On
13 Head Held High
14 Oh! Sweet Nuthin'
15 Some Kinda Love

Someone give that Joseph Freeman dude some money, pronto

nine years pass...

Just listened to the expanded version of this album, I'm struggling to hear why people thought the sound quality was so bad, it's actually pretty good for something that was (supposedly) recorded on a cassette recorder. You can hear all the instruments and vocals and the sound is well balanced. Lou's vocals are strong and tuneful and a reminder that, once upon a time, he could actually sing live... plus he's in full on charming Lou mode. Some bum notes on some of the slower numbers and, as we all know, Billy Yule overplays alarmingly - but then his drumming on "Some Kinda Love" is fantastic. Talking of which, I confess I didn't know Lou was involved in editing and sequencing the original album, in which case how on earth could be choose "Lonesome Cowboy Bill" over "White Light/White Heat" or "I'm Set Free" or the aforementioned "Some Kinda Love" (which is probably the best thing on the album)?

Maggot Bairn (Tom D.), Saturday, 11 February 2023 19:59 (two years ago)

I totally forgot there as an expanded version of this! Yeah, the fidelity never bothered me, but I'm grateful for any live VU.

Cow_Art, Saturday, 11 February 2023 20:11 (two years ago)

Never minded the sound either, just the performance and track selection issues just mentioned. Was unaware of the expanded edition as well. Will have to listen, maybe right now.

Still all I can hear is basically Billy Y.

The Windows of the URL (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 11 February 2023 20:17 (two years ago)

Okay, Sterl just started soloing so I’m starting to feel better.

The Windows of the URL (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 11 February 2023 20:18 (two years ago)

maybe get yourself a Pernod? or a Tuinal?

Heh

The Windows of the URL (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 11 February 2023 21:00 (two years ago)

Yeah, I heard it but... it's it's it's pretty new...

Maggot Bairn (Tom D.), Saturday, 11 February 2023 21:07 (two years ago)

Did anything happen with that Joseph Freeman tape?

Mark G, Sunday, 12 February 2023 05:54 (two years ago)

nothing! freeman even showed up briefly in the Todd Haynes VU doc, but I haven't heard anything about his tapes being released. Very strange, considering how much the barrel has been scraped... feel like his tape might be better than the actual Max's release.

tylerw, Sunday, 12 February 2023 18:19 (two years ago)

Billy Yule is the quintessential teenage drummer who has to throw in a fill at every possible moment

― shookout (shookout), Thursday, August 10, 2006

this is what makes the album impossible to enjoy for me, turns out that Mo's absence is where I finally get off the bus with this band

sleeve, Sunday, 12 February 2023 18:28 (two years ago)

I can't remember if I did it on this thread but I have a way of rendering that style which goes something like this:
A boom-boom CHACK
A boom-boom CHACK
A boom-boom CHACK
A-thud-a-thud-a-thud-a-thud
A boom-boom CHACK
etc

The Windows of the URL (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 12 February 2023 18:46 (two years ago)

lol yes, plus the bippitybippitybippityswish fills, ad infinitum

sleeve, Sunday, 12 February 2023 18:47 (two years ago)

oh wait you meant Mo's style, that makes more sense

sleeve, Sunday, 12 February 2023 18:48 (two years ago)

It's not that different to the drumming on "Loaded", just more excitable.

Maggot Bairn (Tom D.), Sunday, 12 February 2023 18:51 (two years ago)

No, Mo's style is totally different, hers is
(1-e-and-a ) BOOM (3-e-and-a ) BOOM
(1-e-and-a ) BOOM (3-e-and-a ) BOOM
(1-e-and-a ) BOOM (3-e-and-a ) BOOM
(1-e-and-a ) BOOM (3-e-and-a ) BOOM

Where the stuff in parens is played by Lou's guitar.

The Windows of the URL (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 12 February 2023 18:52 (two years ago)

He really gets carried away on "Beginning to See the Light".

Maggot Bairn (Tom D.), Sunday, 12 February 2023 18:52 (two years ago)

The drumming on Loaded is much more conventional than Mo's but also not nearly as teenage talent show as on Max's, at least it's reined in or edited for clarity or something.

The Windows of the URL (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 12 February 2023 18:53 (two years ago)

Also what I was rendering was the TYPICAL teenage talent show drummer, Billy can't even wait until bar four to do his childish fills.

The Windows of the URL (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 12 February 2023 18:54 (two years ago)

Maybe those last BOOMs should be CHACKs

The Windows of the URL (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 12 February 2023 18:55 (two years ago)

xp lol

sleeve, Sunday, 12 February 2023 18:56 (two years ago)

oh no - the drumming on Max's never bothered me but now it's going to, isn't it?

StanM, Sunday, 12 February 2023 18:58 (two years ago)

sorry!

sleeve, Sunday, 12 February 2023 18:59 (two years ago)

If it didn't bother you before, I don't see why it would now.

The Windows of the URL (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 12 February 2023 18:59 (two years ago)

whoa I never knew Ian Paice played drums on Squeeze!

sleeve, Sunday, 12 February 2023 19:01 (two years ago)

As I said earlier his drumming on "Some Kinda Love" is really good - young Billy that is, not Ian Paice. He really gets a hypnotic relentless groove going on with Sterling' guitar and... no fills!

Maggot Bairn (Tom D.), Sunday, 12 February 2023 19:19 (two years ago)

That's all the way near the end at the penultimate spot, maybe I will just skip to that then.

The Windows of the URL (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 12 February 2023 19:27 (two years ago)

I feel like maybe I just probably need to wear out the Quine/Matrix stuff by listening to it thousands more times before I get to this.

The Windows of the URL (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 12 February 2023 19:29 (two years ago)

And I guess I just don't know.

The Windows of the URL (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 12 February 2023 19:29 (two years ago)

I don't like to criticize but Tom D, you are RONG! There is a super-annoying cymbal thing Billy is doing on "Some Kinda Love." But maybe you can't hear that high anymore.

The Windows of the URL (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 12 February 2023 19:30 (two years ago)

The Troggs’ Live at Max’s is a pretty good alternative, if you can’t hang with the VU tape!

unknown blues singer (morrisp), Sunday, 12 February 2023 19:37 (two years ago)

It would have been better if, say, Ondine was sitting at table and talking (trash) (about Lou, say).

The Windows of the URL (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 12 February 2023 19:43 (two years ago)

You mean when he's hitting the bell of the cymbal? I like it!
