Going to the record store for the first time in ages today. What would you recommend someone who's obsessed with these two albums (Eyehategod + Melvins) to pick up?

Harvey Milk - Courtesy And Goodwill Towards Men

Something by Esoteric. My favorite is Epistemological Despondency, but most seem to prefer the newer albums.

Might be bad advice though, as it's less hash and heroin and more psychedelics.

Oxbow - Fuck Fest

i can't stress enough how good the new Negative Reaction album is.

GPT is a difficult record to approach the greatness of.

Electric Wizard - Dopethrone

Gluey Porch Treatments is fucking great, it's true. Scott, have you got round to listening to the Melvins yet? :)

Oxbow is a good call. Check out their compilation, Love That's Last, on Hydra Head. The DVD half is fantastic; the singer puts an unruly audience member in a chokehold at one point.

Scott - check out Lysol, if that doesn't make you a believer I don't know what will. I'm not a big Melvins fan but the first side of Lysol is 20 uninterrupted minutes of knuckle-dragging bliss.

Johnathan, here's a shopping list:
Toadliquor - The Hortator's Lament
Drunks With Guns - Second Verses
Kilslug - Answer The Call
Monster Magnet - Spine of God
Swans - Filth
Godflesh - Streetsweeper
Stickmen With Rayguns - Some People Deserve to Suffer
Upsidedown Cross - s/t
Air Conditioning - Weakness

>> Stickmen With Rayguns - Some People Deserve to Suffer

I've had this on my to-buy list for ages. Can't find it cheap anywhere though :(

You mean Godflesh - Streetcleaner. Personally, i think Pure by Godflesh is a lot better. And i think Gluey Porch Treatments is almost as sludgy as it can get. I doubt there's much else to top it. Probably my favourite Melvins so far. 'Melvins' (or Lysol as it is known to some) is pretty good too.

Where the heck can you get a copy of "Answer the Call" anyway?? Was it ever released on CD?

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Saturday, 2 September 2006 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

Taang! were going to release a Kilslug CD but for some reason it got scuppered. Your only hope is Ebay or Slsk I guess.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 2 September 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

Ahhhh dang! Thanks.
For some reason I have never been able to get soulseek to work.

Apparently you can still get the Answer The Call LP direct from Taang: http://www.taang.com/upsidedowncross.html

If you're into doom sludge ya needs to hear it. 20 years later the thing's still as funny, scary and rockin' as ever. Larry Lifeless in rare form: "I hate lots of people / I can't kill them all / I need your help / To answer the call"

don't think upside down cross sold as many albums as the label expected. like i'm sure they wanted to move double digits at least. great stuff.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Monday, 11 September 2006 15:17 (nineteen years ago)

What are you talking about, Upside Down Cross definitely moved double digits! I think they sold, like, 75 copies of Evilution.

I still prefer Kilslug, but that first album UDC album is pretty reet, too... "I wanna hang on an upside down cross / you don't like it, you get lost / cuz I'm the world's boss"
