anyway, what's done is done.

98. LL Cool J - Rock The Bells

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 21 September 2006 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

LL Cool J - Rock The Bells

Presumably the 2nd version of this. The original was somewhat of a dud in the lineage of early rap records built on drum machines & synths trying to recreate Bob James' Take me to The Mardi Gras break somewhat inneffectivly (i.e. Crash Crew & T La Rock with Mantronix both did a version of Breaking Bells). Not that it was a terrible song, but the remake was undoubtably more potent, despite the lack of Bells...

I always wondered why they (Rick Rubin & LL) remade it. Was it due to MC Shan's accusations of LL being a "beat biter", or was it just deemed too weak. Rubin would revisit the Mardi Gras break a year later for Run DMC and no doubt trumped them all by actually sampling and cutting Mardi Gras (Peter Piper).

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Thursday, 21 September 2006 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

Believe it or not, I actually thought of both Scratch Acid's "Damned For All Time" and the Pink Fairies' "City Kids" on the way out the door this morning, after listing all those other songs upthread. Somebody beat me to them, but I guess they must be good answers.

Also, which is the "first" version of "Rock The Bells"? I always thought the version on the 12-inch (which I stupidly don't own anymore) kicked about ten times harder than the version that wound up on the album, but I always thought that was the original one...
