After recently watching the High Tech Soul doc, I have an itching to explore. Can anyone recommend detroit techno/related which I should be hearing?

Pookas (Pookas), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 13:13 (nineteen years ago)

Sonic Sunset, a show on WNUR in Chicago, does a lot of Detroit-ish stuff. You can download recent show mp3s as well.

Nick Disabato (nickd), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

I'm in the dark about were you are with this.
Are you yet familiar with these canonical titles?

Cybotron - Clear
Kevin Saunderson - Faces & Phases
Derrick May - Innovator
Model 500 - Classics
Richie Hawtin - Decks, EFX, & 909

If so, you ready for the masterpiece that is Carl Craig's Fabric 25 and Audion's Suckfish.

Run, don't walk, to get a hold of this:

Suburban Knight's first three records?

owen moorhead (i heart daniel miller), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

i say start looking for stuff on these labels:

Axis/purpose maker (jeff mills's labels)
Planet E (Carl Craig's label)
Transmat (Derrick May's label)
Plus 8 (Richie Hawtin and John Acquavica's label)
M_nus (Richie's more recent/minimal label)
Metroplex (Juan Atkins's label)
Underground Resistance (one of the best labels ever)

and also : Probe rec.,direct beat,Ghostly/Spectral

If you know that stuff, you'll have a good idea of what detroit techno is about, then there's a million less famous, but often as good as them, for which you'll need to dig a lil deeper.

Yes, seconded.

rattusnorvegicus (ratty!!), Thursday, 5 October 2006 03:07 (nineteen years ago)

one of the worst labels ever

terrible pressings
terrible distribution
terrible sleeve design
terrible website
no flash animation skills

HUNTA-V (vahid), Thursday, 5 October 2006 03:13 (nineteen years ago)

also the compilations are rather unlistenable

HUNTA-V (vahid), Thursday, 5 October 2006 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

and pretty much everybody on UR who isn't UR / mad mike or drexciya themselves sorta blows (w/ the exception of rolando, who has one good track)

HUNTA-V (vahid), Thursday, 5 October 2006 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

so UR is an incredible group, ie mad mike is an incredible person, but i think what the label has done, ie suck up his time and energy into promoting a bunch of sub-UR artists w/ the same musical ideas but much poorer execution is sort of crap.

compare to jeff mills who basically just put his money into promoting his own shit ... well, actually now he's recording w/ orchestras, forget jeff mills ...

compare to carl craig?

HUNTA-V (vahid), Thursday, 5 October 2006 03:18 (nineteen years ago)

Detroit techno is for many an acquired taste that a lot of supposed lovers of the genre simply can't get down with.

In terms of Mike Banks....I dont know about you but as far as I know UR the label is something Mike *chose* to start, maintain and continues to be involved with. You make it sound like the brother is somehow being forced to run it. Or maybe I misunderstood you.

The other thing I wanted to mention is that a great many UR releases have no credits to them, and it's my impression that Mike is involved in a great many of those releases. So saying the label promotes "sub-UR artists with poorer execution" is basically dissing Mike, isnt it? For example the Red Planet series(which I highly recommend) for nearly 15 years has given us the most otherworldly and emotional techno music ever released to the public, has not a single release over that span has ever officially been credited to anyone.

ml (mltronik), Thursday, 5 October 2006 04:30 (nineteen years ago)

i can say that he put out a crap record w/o "dissing" the man

HUNTA-V (vahid), Thursday, 5 October 2006 05:03 (nineteen years ago)

also, the proper grammatical execution of that tricky phrase is

Detroit techno is an acquired taste that many supposed lovers of the genre simply can't get down with.

HUNTA-V (vahid), Thursday, 5 October 2006 05:05 (nineteen years ago)

he put out a ton of crappy records! there hasn't been anything good since 2001 except for "transition" and "inspiration" and MAYBE "ma ya ya" which was a JOEK RECORD and MAYBE "slider's joint" which was like "FISHER PRICE MY FIRST CRISTIAN VOGEL RECORD"

MIKE BANKS PUTS OUT SOME REAL GARBAGE

THERE

I SAID IT

HUNTA-V (vahid), Thursday, 5 October 2006 05:08 (nineteen years ago)

Helluva track, Transition. Love that track.

rattusnorvegicus (ratty!!), Thursday, 5 October 2006 05:13 (nineteen years ago)

mltronik, if you are such a big mike banks fan you need to come back w/ some more intellectually honest argument than

"not a real detroit techno fan!! splutter splutter!! don't question what the artist does!! splutter splutter!! do you REALIZE WHO YOU ARE CRITICIZING?? *gasp* red planet!! hasn't put out a record in almost ten years!! trapped in the 1998 wormhole!! splutter splutter!!"

Yeah I've looked at that Aaron Carl mix. I love Aaron Carl so much.

"Transition" is great yes. I'm scared to contribute to this thread though now.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 5 October 2006 07:33 (nineteen years ago)

Tim, Vahid can do that to people. He just gets excited is all.

I haven't bought any Detroit Techno in a while other than Juan Atkins' recent album on Tresor which I liked. Pookas, you need Juan Atkins in your life.

tylero (tylero), Monday, 9 October 2006 06:35 (nineteen years ago)

That mix is on the Detroit Electro side of things, and made up of mostly new tracks.

tylero (tylero), Monday, 9 October 2006 06:43 (nineteen years ago)

wasnt red planet will thomas?

-- (688), Monday, 9 October 2006 09:46 (nineteen years ago)

Rolando has way more than one good track!! Good god! I mean at the very least listen to "The Aztec Mystic"! Shit is incredible! Millions of minimal curlicues married to techno... it's one of those "infinite" records, reminds you of the way acid feels, no end to the fractals delivering themselves down deeper into the sound and wrapping around to come up behind you again. Just absurdly good and has never quite been topped.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Monday, 9 October 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

(btw props to vahid for making this a non-mad-mike/drexciya-UR: defend the indefensible! It's fun!)

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Monday, 9 October 2006 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

tyler, would you please post a link to the rest of the mixes, i just spent 15 minutes on their site trying to find them, there's way too much stuff on there.

Jena (JenaP), Monday, 9 October 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

The Aaron Carl single (Tears) from this year is really good as well.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 9 October 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

I discovered a new first wave Detroit label this weekend.

http://www.discogs.com/label/Express+Records

This label features early work by Art Forrest, Juan Atkins, Trackmaster Lou Robinson, Terrence Parker and Mark Kinchen.

The 90 Dance Detroit Dance Comp:
http://www.discogs.com/release/37046

I picked up a sealed copy of this on Saturday. The B-side is mostly Incognito liscenced tracks is fanstatic. The A-1 is pretty good as well. I would play the material from this comp between the Inner City hits, Mid-20's KMS, the Yolanda records on UR and DJ International records.

Also, Aguila by The Aztec Mystic is the most under-rated thing Rolando ever did. That record deserves way more recognition.

http://www.discogs.com/release/179399

There are so many fantastic Detroit records that you could spend years digging through back catalog material for gems.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Monday, 9 October 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

also absolutely nothing wrong with "Can't Wait" by The Vision a.k.a. Robert Hood

I really wish there was some way of getting the Slices DVDs in the US. They're featuring Underground Resistance this month. Are there any t0rrent copies floating around, i wonder?

Jena (JenaP), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 07:49 (nineteen years ago)

The slices dvd series came up in the release sheets at the record store I work at but they are REALLY pricey at around 32 canadian retail. My friend got me one in the UK last year for free so I'm kinda confused as to how much these cost in the EU or some junk..

Pookas (Pookas), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

They're FREE in the EU

Jena (JenaP), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

Well that's terrible a distributor is going to charge NA retailers so much for a free dvd!?!?

Pookas (Pookas), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

Everything is free in the EU.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

The Slices people are putting out some kind of special long-feature series you DO pay for (first one on Hawtin apparently) maybe there's a mix up here?

eh (fandango), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

You are right, I just checked the release books - the slices comp listed was for Richie Hawtin feat. My mistake.

Pookas (Pookas), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

So wifey and I will be in Detroit one of the weekends in November (not sure which one yet) and I wanted to get some recommendations of places to go in the techno-related realm. Any clubs in particular we can go to and hear the finest in Detroit techno? And Submerge is an actual physical record store too, not just online right? Is it worth the visit? Where to go to get all the Theo and Moodymann and UR releases that Vahid requires me to own? Please inform me Detroiters.

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

I no longer live in tha D, but I recall Submerge as having weird hours...make sure they are open before you head over there...you should hit Record Time in Ferndale for techno shopping...I'll leave the club recommendations to the current Detroiters...Oslo always seems to have something doing when I'm back in town...

hank (hank s), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

Check out Vybes in Oak Park. check 411 and call for hours. I couldn't get there last time I was in town, but I have heard that they are good.

Also the place to go in Detroit these days is Memories and Melodies.
Their classic dance music section is fucking sick(and cheap).Their used house section is gigantic and their new Detroit house section is very complete(if it's in print it's there). Their Techno section is decent, I was very suprised by what I found there. They also have a good selection of bass tracks in the hip hop section. Be prepared to dig deep and spend a lot of money.

Go to submerge tho, all the old Chez Damier records just got repressed a couple weeks ago!

Recordtime is good, but it hasn't been the same since they closed the dance room.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

Model 500 - Electric Entourage
Model 500 - Sound of Stereo
Rhythim is Rhythim - Strings of Life (!!)
Rhythim is Rhythim - Move It
Rhythim is Rhythim - Nude Photo
Reese & Santonio - The Sound
F.U.S.E. - Substance Abuse

PappaWheelie: making friends with morons daily (PappaWheelie 2), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

The funny thing is that it will be hard to get ahold of these. I dont have vinyl copies of Strings or Nude Photo because they are never in print. It is the same with Night Drive and No UFO's by M500, those records don't turn up.

Also, if you are going hunt down a Reese record, it should be One More Chance. It is like the flipside of Inner City, claustrophobic stalker house.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

anybody remember Save The Vinyl?...(Blake Baxter's record store)...thems was the days...

Thanks for the recommendations folks. Any clubs?

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 19 October 2006 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 19 October 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
My, my, my!!! Just so you all can breathe now, it looks like we'll actually be there on New Year's Even and look at this massive event we just ordered tickets for:

NEW YEAR'S EVE SPECIAL EVENT
Detroit Legends of Electronic Music
featuring Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson & Carl Craig

Party at The Max this New Year's Eve dancing 'till dawn with the pioneering trio of electronic music as they spin their signature blend of techno, hip-hop and pop at The Max. The DSO does not appear on this program.

Sun., Dec. 31, 10 p.m. - 4 a.m.

Theo P is also spinning in a room right next to the main room. All my dreams are fulfilled. Here's more info: http://www.detroitsymphony.com/main.taf?p=5,2,1,163

Anybody been to this place? It looks immaculate, although not quite the club setting I had expected. It should be quite an experience. Thanks for reading.

Can anyone recommend a particular book about Detroit techno that deals with origins, context etc.?

the who cares (okamax), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

I know I've posted NDS videos here plenty of times. There's one user on youtube who has a whole archive of them up, with tracklistings too. I forget the name exactly, but said person should be very easy to find.

It's not the show-proper but musically, I think this is the best I've seen.

Thanks Moley, that looks like the book I'm looking for.

Has anyone read Mathias (k*l*an) Hanf's Detroit Techno: Transfer of the Soul through the Machine? I've been eyeing it on Amazon but $70 for 124 pages seems a bit steep. Makes me wonder if it's one of those deeply academic/critical theory jobs. It's from 2010, and I suspect translated from German.
