Things about Pump Up The Jam

Seriously, it's such a fuckin shame it's lost credibility and fallen into the realm of dorky kitsch. It truly is one of the best house songs I've ever heard. During the first "aoooohhh ah, a place to stay", when the drum machine comes in the left channel and the bass synth comes in the right and they both pull that rhythm off.... ohhhhhhhhhhh man

'lost', 'fallen'.

I love the bass synth in this. Fuckpony's "It's Only Music" is one of my favourite songs of the year simply for halfway reviving it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 09:36 (eighteen years ago)

the stab in this is in every record from 1990 or whenever it was. is it todd terry who invented it?

benrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 09:46 (eighteen years ago)

WHAT is it? I know the left-channel snare is a 909... is that bassy sound as well, or are they really using a 909 in one channel and a bass machine simultaneously in another

Yeah I think it was Todd Terry.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 10:25 (eighteen years ago)

Day In The Life.
Isn't it sampled or aproximated from Move Your Body though?

Ni Ol (Pelikaan), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 11:09 (eighteen years ago)

My copy was obtained from the front of a Frosties cereal box!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

I got "Three is the Magic Number" from my Frosties box. Still got it as well. Grrrrrrreat.

I always thought those buzzing synths from "Slave 4 U" by Britney were sampled from this.

kevin says relax (daddy warbuxx), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 23:58 (eighteen years ago)

An incredibly naff song that did nevertheless introduce a drum sound that was to become a 90s trademark sound.

I have been waiting five years for someone else to say this.

Wow thanks for the link to that thread edward, it really took me back!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 10:28 (eighteen years ago)

I still prefer "Rockin' Over the Beat".

it's not a sample. how many two-note stabs are there? i doubt it's a conscious reference.

benrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

I actually said it only reminded me of it a lot - I didn't really think it was a sample.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

ah i mean guy who you quoted thar.

benrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

The lineage of that keyboard stab is as follows:

1) "Move Your Body (The House Music Anthem)" - Marshall Jefferson
2) "Can U Party" - Royal House
3) "Pump Up The Jam"

2) actually samples from 1).

3) is just an appropriation.

Incidentally, Todd Terry's remix of "Pump Up The Jam" owns this thread.
