lo-fi probably isn't even the right word for what i'm looking for here. subdued? minimalist? AMBIENT? christ i dunno. i have a headache.

bo janglin (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

"There's a Riot Goin' On"!!!
Funkadelic -- I'm thinking of especially stoned-sounding, murky stuff like "Can You Get to That" and "What is Soul?"
Timmy Thomas
Al Downing, "I'll Be Holding On"
James Knight and the Butlers, "Fantasy World" (on the Soul Jazz "Miami Sound" compilation -- the biggest hook in it is feedback!)
Beach Boys, "Wild Honey" album (seriously!)
"Here, My Dear" is probably too sonically polished to completely belong here, but I love Christgau's description of it as "70 minutes of music without a melody line."

Great call on that Frederick Knight record.

nate p. (natepatrin), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 03:29 (eighteen years ago)

i don't see how curtis fits in here at all.
please don't let Allen sing if he comes here.

And if you don't care if the instrumentation is subdued even if the singers are the exact opposite the Dramatics' "In the Rain" for sure.

holy fusk that Timmy Thomas song is great. what's it been used in? totally familiar.

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 07:19 (eighteen years ago)

Sam Dees has two reissues of his outtakes and demos that I can't praise enough. A lot of the music fits what I think you are trying to find. "Second to None" would be the first one to get. It's on Kent Soul, a sublabel of Ace records. If you like it and can afford it, try bidding on his only proper release,"The Show Must Go On". I think it's one of the best 70's soul albums, and is long over due for a reissue.

It's on the soundtrack to Boys Don't Cry, for one.
