Modest Marr - Dashboard

I know everyone here loves Modest Mouse, and well, with Johnny Marr in the band now, what could cause a more interesting thread?

Their first song, Dashboard, has been released and can be heard here:
http://www.modestmousemusic.com/

Thoughts? It reminds me of the bastard lovechild of 'The View' off of GNFPWLBN and 'This Charming Man.' I like it, but then, I like Modest Mouse and the Smiths.

I can't find a thread, so if this has been discussed, my apologies.

Your first mistake.

I'm going to not click that and just assume unmititgated disaster.

I think this is the clue that the first line was a joke, Ned.

I dunno, Noodle, these days I wonder.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

I am in full-time Pollyanna mode nowadays.

Johnny Marr's newest band...Modest Mouse?

Sarcasm, Ned! Next time I will add a wink. ;)

his sister pam (hissisterpam), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

Mmm, and Mcd - I remember that thread.. I was looking for one having to do with the single specifically. Thank you though!

his sister pam (hissisterpam), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

I actually do like Modest Mouse

but I listened to this song once and have no desire to ever hear it again

Bernard Snowy (sixteen sergeants), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

i still really like in the lonesome crowded west.

The problem lies not with folks' sarcasm-detectors. It lies with folks' sarcasm-expressors.

Do enlighten me, Libcryptic!

his sister pam (hissisterpam), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

i like the singles comp turning something into nothing pretty much too. it has a nice cd booklet.

i never got the "popular" album, i'm a cornee indie fukk.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

Do enlighten me, Libcryptic!

Sarcasm works best with a generous helping of context. And on our wonderful Internets, context is more often than not considered worthless or impossible. Hence, people who have no problems whatsoever expressing sarcasm in person with the contextual aids of tone and facial expression are unable to effectively express sarcasm in a purely textual form, often becoming irate when their sarcastic intentions are not perceived by their colleagues.

Now, I'm not suggesting that you in particular are irate, but the onus of responsibility for sarcasm has, by and large, shifted from the author to the reader. When someone doesn't pick up on intended irony, it's considered his or her fault, not the original author's. I think that's incorrect. The Internet has simply upped the ante in the sarcasm game, and people have yet to realize that their two bits ain't got 'em a seat at the table.

I didn't mean to go off on this here, but the various component thought-bits just kinda fell into place right then.

HEY man THANKS SO MUCH for EXPLAINING that to me, i REALLY APPRECIATE your INSIGHT

Tchah!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

Building Nothing Out of Something is probably my favorite record of theirs, or at least tied with The Moon & Antarctica. They're so totally different, though, that it's almost impossible to compare them -- Nothing is a monochromatic collection of great songs, while TM&A is a straight-up album, the sort where each track shines less brightly when seen apart from its neighbors (cf. the opening guitar strum of "Wild Packs of Family Dogs", which hits like an unexpected sunrise on a planet that went to sleep resigned to its own imminent demise). Lonesome Crowded West splits the difference, with weird and mixed results; I almost feel like it might be a better listen if obvious-high-point "Cowboy Dan" were absent.

Bernard Snowy (sixteen sergeants), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

urgh, sorry for terrible sunrise metaphor; plz to mentally replace with terrible gus gerard allusion tia

Bernard Snowy (sixteen sergeants), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

that song "i'm trying to drink away the part of the day that i cannot sleep away" perfectly coincided with the time in my life when i worked at a bar and was prolly becoming an sort-of alcoholic so i like that one best.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

dis song blowz, y'all

yours fondly, harshaw. (mrgn), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

I rather like this song though the chorus is sung quite badly

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

xpost: yeah I like that one too. except the part about lowriders and shit, that never made any sense to me.

Bernard Snowy (sixteen sergeants), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

xpost again: yeah, I'm not really sure why dude's vocals seem to be getting worse with each release. the same thing bugged me on My Morning Jacket's latest; my current theory is that this is some sort of mid-level-indie-rock-band-signed-to-a-major-label thing, where suddenly the label is paying for expensive studio time and things have to be done on a schedule, so dudes push their voices too hard and then don't have time to let them recover.

Bernard Snowy (sixteen sergeants), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

(alternate explanation: Z just had less reverb-y goodness slathered all over the vocals than the previous albums)

Bernard Snowy (sixteen sergeants), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:38 (nineteen years ago)

sound like modest mouse hacks doing an overzealous bad talking heads impression that meanders into the back yard of a ska band that covers cher

realkwaint (HGULTRUILLUM), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

i mean, the back yard of a house where a cher had been fucking a ska band

realkwaint (HGULTRUILLUM), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

man. This is sad. Those horns. This is terrible.

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Thursday, 18 January 2007 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

Reaction of a long-standing Modest Mouse Fan: First impression is that it's trying a little too hard, the vocals are overpressed, and the production is a little bit busy....but, that aside, it doesn't really offend me as a further step in the shimmery shiny direction from the last record. It's got some really lovely parts in the midst of the rattle and clamor. If you didn't tell me it was Johnny Marr I certainly wouldn't know; he's not really doing anything that doesn't fit with their established sound.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 18 January 2007 01:18 (nineteen years ago)

I like this song! But I like Modest Mouse.

Peppered Moth (Peppered Moth), Thursday, 18 January 2007 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

OMG...

I read the title of this thread a few times and completely dismissed it, thinking in the back of my mind that there was something familiar about this band name "Modest Marr" but not enough to make me click on the thread. Then I got bored and figured it out.

And wow, I like the song Dashboard, I certainly do. And of course I hate Modest Mouse normally but...wow. What fun! Horns too!

White Dopes on Punk (Bimble...), Thursday, 18 January 2007 05:13 (nineteen years ago)

But I mean...are you telling me that's Johnny on guitar on that? I mean really? The one and only? *Gulp* I mean, oh my god. I can get really nuts about him I mean...if I had found ILM back when the Johnny Marr & Healers album came out you would have all gotten sick of me real quick! hahaha.

White Dopes on Punk (Bimble...), Thursday, 18 January 2007 05:17 (nineteen years ago)

Rumour has it Modest Mouse were hanging out on a large boat with H3ath L3dger in Perth, Western Australia a couple of weeks ago.

badg (badg), Thursday, 18 January 2007 06:41 (nineteen years ago)

Sounds a looot like the Blackouts. I like the strings and brass, sort of unexpected. But I can't find the Marr influence.

I.M. (I.M.), Friday, 19 January 2007 09:29 (eighteen years ago)

Vocals do suck, though.

I.M. (I.M.), Friday, 19 January 2007 09:30 (eighteen years ago)

That's their "thing".

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Friday, 19 January 2007 13:00 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...
I've heard a few tracks from this now and find myself liking it despite my prejudice against MM and especially their vocalist. "Parting of the Sensory" is especially nice and rather against the grain of typical contemporary indie, I think.

Bimble, Friday, 2 March 2007 08:44 (eighteen years ago)

I backed my marr into a mop marr the other day

billstevejim, Friday, 2 March 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

Well I hate Modest Mouse, and the last Marr solo thing was fucking awful but this song has some great moments, and the strings remind me of Hung Up. I also think the combo of their pseudo indie disco drums works well with Marrs R and B with echo guitar more than it does the lame, bendy note guitar center pedal thing they had going on before. They also benefit immensely from moving away from the Tom Waits rip off vernacular.

filthy dylan, Friday, 2 March 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

I only realized later today that I'd revived a thread about the song Dashboard rather than for the album. I didn't see a thread about the album in the search results. Was it only on Sandbox? Oh the drama. Frankly I can't be bothered figuring it out right now.

Also I don't know what it means to back your marr into a mop marr but please let me do that too.
