Being a soppy, loving brother, I want to send my sister (who is travelling) a mix CD with the theme of sisters. But what tracks?

A couple to get started

Antony & the Johnsons - You are my sister

Joanna Newsom - Emily (about her sister)

The track can also mention her name: Jennifer. so:

Belle and Sebastian - Photo Jenny

Thank you kindly

There aren't that many nice songs about sisters, they tend to be creepy or weird

Tom D. (Dada), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

Juliana Hatfield, "My Sister"

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

The Grauniad had an article on this very subject today, in their readers recommend section:
http://music.guardian.co.uk/readersrecommend/story/0,,1993516,00.html

I'd say My Sister by Tindersticks, cos it's great, but also as miserable as sin I'm afraid!

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

Well there's lots of horrible folk songs about sisters - full of incest, rape, murder and often all three - but that's maybe not waht you're looking for!

Tom D. (Dada), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

You and Your Sister--Chris Bell

Duet with Alex Chilton, basically a Big Star song in all but name.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

"Sestrichka-Bratishka" by Nikakoi (so yes, it's about a sister as well as a brother)

tiit (tiit), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

Antibalas "Sister"
The Cult "Brother Wolf Sister Moon"
"Sister Surround" Soundtrack of Our Lives
there's that song "Orange Sky" by Alexi Murdoch that's about brothers and sisters, but heavy on the touchy-feely

Eyehategod - Sister Fucker (Part I)
Eyehategod - Sister Fucker (Part II)

Sir Echo (Sir Echo), Friday, 19 January 2007 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

Note that "Fish Fry" is about murdering of the sister, and "Sister Flossie" is about group sexing of sister, so those are prob. not recommended for yr. comp. Never paid attention to the lyrics of "Sister/Brother", but I imagine they're at least somewhat unsavory.

Oh, and "Sister Rosa" is just about Rosa Parks. Maybe she's somebody's sister, but then again, maybe not. Still, I understand that she was a very nice lady. Too bad the song sucks.

er, make that *steel* grey hair...(and mark me down for another senior moment)...

hank (hank s), Friday, 19 January 2007 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

Carly Simon - "My Older Sister" (god I love that one)
The Church - "Sisters"

I remember once when I saw Catherine Wheel live, the singer introduced one of the songs by saying "this one is about killing your sister"...I thought that was pretty bizarre and uncool.

White Dopes on Punk (Bimble...), Friday, 19 January 2007 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

Stone Roses - (Song For My) Sugar Spun Sister

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 20 January 2007 03:00 (nineteen years ago)

Thank you Billy Pilgrim for remembering 'Two Sisters' by The Kinks. I recommend its monstrous spawn, 'A Sister Like You' by The Auteurs. It's highly enjoyable and you can smell Luke Haines' hideous breath even through small desktop speakers.

Dr. Joseph A. Ofalt (hyloolnuspstt), Saturday, 20 January 2007 04:22 (nineteen years ago)

Oh my god we forgot the Stone Roses! THANKS RUFUS!

White Dopes on Punk (Bimble...), Saturday, 20 January 2007 04:23 (nineteen years ago)

I shall have to listen to "Two Sisters" by the Kinks again. I can't remember it now at all.

White Dopes on Punk (Bimble...), Saturday, 20 January 2007 04:24 (nineteen years ago)

Oh my god. NEVER MIND. Two Sisters is on my favourite Kinks album "Something Else". Never mind. I know it's brilliant. Haven't heard it in years but I know it's brilliant. Never mind. I shall play it now.

White Dopes on Punk (Bimble...), Saturday, 20 January 2007 04:27 (nineteen years ago)

Oh thank God the first song that came to my mind hasn't yet been mentioned: "Sisters" by Rosemary and Betty Clooney. It was featured in the '50s movie White Christmas, where Rosemary mimes it along with her co-star Vera-Lynn.

I love "Sister Of Mercy" by the Thompson Twins, BTW, but yeah, that's not exactly in keeping with the whole "songs about sisters" theme....

Phoenix Dancing (krushsister), Saturday, 20 January 2007 04:37 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, it's interesting that the theme of this song is the same as my formerly recommended Carly Simon's "Older Sister" (sorry it wasn't called "My Older Sister" after all, just "Older Sister"). The theme is a younger sister being so painfully jealous of her older sister.

For myself, I always wondered what it might be like to have a sister. I never lucky enough to have one.

White Dopes on Punk (Bimble...), Saturday, 20 January 2007 04:38 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway I was talking about the Kinks song "Two Sisters" though it crossed with Phoenix.

White Dopes on Punk (Bimble...), Saturday, 20 January 2007 04:39 (nineteen years ago)

The Kinks and Cary Simon you see? Because Ray Davies and Carly Simons are both Cancers.

White Dopes on Punk (Bimble...), Saturday, 20 January 2007 04:40 (nineteen years ago)

Look, if you call me drunk, I'll just put on Kate Bush and that will be the end of the argument. So no barroom brawls tonight.

White Dopes on Punk (Bimble...), Saturday, 20 January 2007 04:41 (nineteen years ago)

"Little Sister" by Silkworm, but it's a tad depressing.

I should say that my sister likes pink (the colour, not the artists)

rogwan (rogwan), Saturday, 20 January 2007 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

that may be the setup of the kinks' "two sisters," but it's most certainly not the theme. the theme is quite the opposite, i'd say.

also note that ray davies has said the two sisters he had in mind were himself and dave.

Phoenix Dancing (krushsister), Sunday, 21 January 2007 08:51 (nineteen years ago)

Geir wins. And I am drunk again. What? Was there a Runaways sister song? I am all over that shit. Let me make my way to my CD stacks.

Nuttin' wrong with Billy Idol, though.
