While I don't have any news links to pass along for media confirmation, it appears that Disco D (born: David Shayman) took his own life yesterday. Very sorry to report. He was a great guy and a super-dedicated producer/DJ.

Fuck. Feel bad for telling my story of how awfully he cleared the floor at Sónar to all and sundry now. Responsible for some great beats and he must've been pretty young. Some sad shit.

That blows. :( I'm going to do an all-databass etc mix tonight when I get home from work in memorium.

He was a talented, shrewd fellow.

It is always weird when dance music people die. You just kind of assume that you will always randomly come across press about them. Even if you don't know them personally, it makes you feel good to know that they are out there doing it. Another little light from that lost time in the 90's just went out.

RIP

I had one of those "OH SHIT!" moments when I scanned the credits of the 50 record to see he had done one of the best tracks on it.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

I read somewhere he was going to be in a movie called Hustle Harder. Don't know if it was something he was producing.

>
>
> It is with a heavy heart that I email about the passing of David
> Shayman.
>
> Those who knew Dave know he was a once in a lifetime person with
> an electric and captivating personality. He was a friend without equal,
> who was selfless with himself and his counsel, consistently living up to
> his mantra, "the only thing you cant make more of is time." He was a
> relentlessly creative, passionate and ambitious artist whose passion for
> music illuminated everything he touched.
>
> Under the alias Disco D, Dave was responsible for production on
> 2 grammy nominated albums and releases totaling 17 million in sales
> worldwide.
>
> As a prodigious 15-year old in Ann Arbor, Dave began his DJ
> career, representing the burgeoning Ghetto-Tech scene from Detroit. By
> 16, he was a resident at the local Solar night and by 17, had produced
> and released his first 12" single. All of this, Dave accomplished
> before graduating from the University of Michigan's prestigious business
> school. Dave toured the world many times over as a DJ and was famous
> for his turntable dexterity and multi-genre sets. Dave was also
> integral in starting the Ghostly International label and co-produced the
> debut single, Hands Up For Detroit.
>
> Dave moved to New York City, with the goal of producing beats
> for major Hip-Hop artists, resulting in a string of high-profile
> productions and remixes, including the song "Ski Mask Way" for 50 Cent,
> which was considered a critic and fan favorite and arguably the album's
> best. He was profiled in magazines such as XXL and Scratch as an
> up-and-coming producer. His passion led him to Brazil where he began
> producing new Hip-Hop artists, looking to shed light on the local scene.
>
> On Tuesday, January 23rd, Dave took his life at the age of 27,
> ending a long and difficult bout with depression and bipolar disorder.
>
> Dave believed that sharing one's own problems and being open
> about his mental health was a way to help others. His courage, unrivaled
> passion, and his consistent dedication to his craft will never be
> forgotten.
>
>
> ----------------
>
> Personally, Dave was an inspiration and a mentor to me. No one
> worked harder or wanted to seize life more than him. His guidance,

>
> It is estimated nearly thirty percent of those diagnosed with

> Depression and Bipolar disorder are diseases, not states of mind

can't say i'm shocked - didn't he just do an interview for ... was it RE:up?

if i recall right, in the interview he just talked alot about how f'd up he was and how much d0pe he was sm0kin and how he didn't even want to leave bed / the house most days.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

good god, how bloody horrible. RIP D, saw him in SF in early 2000. People weren't quite sure what to make of it as his mixing style was so frantic and bpms so high but it was a lovely noise. Plus it was just good to see the looks on the SF peoples faces.

This sad news really resonates with me...

If anyone has an instrumental of "Ski Mask Way" or another really dope Disco D. track hook me up because I want to make a tribute type track...

Thanks.
