If we remove Aja, My Aim is True, and that particular Randy Newman album, we have an exemplary top ten. Like Christgau, though, I'd rank Rumours above Bollocks.

Also:

16. Bryan Ferry: In Your Mind (Atlantic) 80 (9)

Bizarre. The Greil Marcus Sympathy Vote?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 28 January 2007 02:21 (nineteen years ago)

Damn, I was afraid to admit that shit about JT...

Saxby D. Elder (Saxby D. Elder), Sunday, 28 January 2007 04:32 (nineteen years ago)

I had my first girlfriend that year -- she actually WAS the girl next door, so "Your Smiling Face" was totally my jam. Not just beautiful, but she was automatic on turnaround jumpers from 15 feet. (Last I heard from her, she was dragged out of our 20th year reunion in handcuffs, drunk and hitting on one of our married classmates.) "Traffic Jam" was great too.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 28 January 2007 04:38 (nineteen years ago)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 28 January 2007 05:29 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah mine was about my first girl too... (two of em actually!) I think "Terra Nova" stands up nicely for me (actually it's just a good record). Were you 15 then too? I liked James Taylor when I was like 10-11, HEAVY. Then I pretty much forgot all about him and these girls were all about the JT album and I thought it was pretty good! And that was even irrespective of how badly I wanted to see a vagina and/or breasts.

I will get my list up soon, still pondering.

BTW, AMG's shit is all fucked up about Dancing In Your Head. Off the top of MY head, I thought it was 1976 actually but they are all over the place on it. Again, from memory, I thought it was Dancin in '76 then Body Meta in 77, or do I have it wrong? As much as I love both, I doubt either one would hit my top 10 though. (Of Human Feelings is top 10 1982 for me though).

I must have played Dancing In Your Head a hundred times for my ex-wife before she finally admitted it was good. Don't tell her I told you this but we used to have sex to it all the time. (probably why it took her so long to admit it was good!)

Nice lists yall.... What a year for music!

OK, straight up (and OT), these are my NON-RETROACTIVE picks! This is really what I was into in 1977 (15 years old and DJ-ing every party).

1. Bootsy's Rubber Band "Ahh...The Name Is Bootsy, Baby!"
2. Commodores - s/t
3. The Isley Brothers "Go for Your Guns"
4. Parliament "Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome"
5. VA - Saturday Night Fever OST
6. The Brothers Johnson "Right On Time"
7. Cameo "Cardiac Arrest"
8. James Taylor "JT" (Anna and Sue, please contact me!)
9. Bar-Kays "Flying High On Your Love"
10. Earth Wind & Fire "All 'N All"

Honorable Mention:

Roy Ayers "Lifeline" ("Running Away" COME ON!!)
The Emotions "Rejoice
Slave s/t

RETROACTIVE picks to come, just in a weird place right now thinking about all of these. Boy we had fun! Hormones were everywhere!!!

This thread should be borne in mind:
POX 1977 Non-Punk Albums

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 29 January 2007 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

0. MX-80 Sound, Hard Attack
2. Saturday Night Fever OST
3. Bizarros/Rubber City Rebels, From Akron
4. Parliament, Funkentelechy...
5. AC/DC, Let There Be Rock
6. Donna Summer, Once Upon A Time
7. Max Webster, High Class In Borrowed Shoes
8. Fleetwood Mac, Rumours
9. The Damned, Damned Damned Damned
10. Sex Pistols, Bollocks

singles:
1. "I Feel Love"
2. "Dancing Queen"
3. "Rockaway Beach"
4. "Strawberry Letter 23" (Brothers Johnson)
5. "Come Sail Away" (Yeah, Styx. And if you disagree, screw you!)
6. "Black Betty", Ram Jam
7. "Turn To Stone", ELO
8. "Brick House"
9. "Closer To The Heart", Rush
10."See No Evil", Televsion

[NOTE: MX-80 is ranked #0 because #1 is insufficient for my favourite release of all time. And Ramones deserved better than to have their two fine LPs split the vote.]

M. Agony Von Bontee (M. Agony Von Bontee), Monday, 29 January 2007 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

My actual retroactive picks would only just include the usual punk suspects and wouldn't make for interesting reading so I will leave my actual 1977 faves stand (not that anyone probably gives a fuck). (Although no one seems to have mentioned "Pink Flag", which is MY favorite punk record of the year).

I would definitely have to mention "Dandy In The Underworld", which is a real favorite record of mine (but was already cited by someone).

And big up to the person that remembered the very special Muddy Waters and his big comeback album "Hard Again", which I am sure I have listened to at least 500 times (and was lucky enough to see live twice that very year!).
